This song takes my breath away every time I hear it! Our first "song", that was 30 years ago, still crazy about my cowboy and loving life here in OKLAHOMA with our 5 children and now grandchildren!! He still works on his John Deer tractor,....though not 10 hours any more :o)
Your the reason God made California, Jeri-Lynn, its been thirty years since you walked out of my life. I still love you and miss you, sweetheart. This song brings tears to my eye's every time I hear it as I wonder what we would have been like together.....MikeM
this is "our song" Jim and Ann--30 years 10/24/1981--and absolutely, he's the reason God made Indiana haha--I'm a Southern gal so I joke that I only tolerated moving north was Jim:)

These type of country music singers and songs are a constant reminder that country music as it was once known is dead, dead, dead. I am a country music fan but I do not listen to most of the country songs and singers of today....other than Kellie Pickler. She is real...... and definitely eye candy.
I give my sincere apologies to my unfortunate replay button, but I was desperate for true country music, and you casused me to repeatedly click on you. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me..
This song still holds truth for me. I live in a city and I miss a man who lives in the country. Several hundreds of miles away. I love this song. One of my favorites.

They use to play this song a lot in the early days of the Cowboy, a huge country western nightclub-just a short walk from Disneyland. It was a great club. The owner, Jack Wade, was always fooling around with other types of music. Eventually, he played music that attracted a pretty wild crowd that left him swamped with lawsuits.

This is my favorite country duet ever. It's a classic to be listen to years from now. It takes me back so much to the early 80's. What has happened to the whole music scene, especially country. The songs & music today will all be forgotten in a couple of years. What happened to the creativity. Everything sounds pretty much the same. Young people on YouTube discover the older musicians & music of that era & love it, because it's so original.
crowleyridgegirl,. 'Come Monday',. 'Fields of Gold' and 'You're the Reason God made Oklahoma' are accomplished tunes; simple in their guitar-based arrangements yet robust in execution while bewitching in their majesty. Note; Simplicity in a tonal medium is the most difficult to master. These folks are flat-out professionals.
An outstanding video! I have been in love with this beautiful duet since the early 1980's. In the military, I clearly remember scads of folks dancing whenever it was played in a German or American inspired disco in Deutschland. The results were the same, major applause for the artists (Dottie & David) and major league US-German two stepping. Good folks from both countries enjoying great music. I was still just a kid then; but the memories will last until the day I die. Bravo! Cheers! Besten!
I loved this song...thought they both were so good together~ I bought this record as a 45 I am sure, was one of my faves. Two talents from talented families.
Met Shelly West at a club in Texas, just outside Ft Hood. David Frizzell and the band were performing with her. She was one of the most friendly down to earth personalities I ever met. Yes, she was drop dead gorgious and that voice, that was the first time I heard them do The Reason God Made Oklahoma.
I love this! I always thought Shelly West was one of the sexiest women alive! I guess she still is. I have not seen or heard anything from her lately. I just loved her voice when she sang, or talked. And don't forget her good looks!
You cannot apprieciate a true country song; that touches your soul unless your from the country. You've worked the jobs with sweat on your brows and stinging your eyes. It was hard work, and driving down country roads in a 1958 Chevy truck, heat on you, dust flying behind you.. those were the days. Days that were filled with what made you who you are today. No air conditioning and am radio. Thank you for letting a country girl close her eyes and remember.

i remember so clearly where i was when i first heard this on the radio; leaving a one-night-stand (who knew?); the hope, the longing, the loss -- comes back in a flash

I love singing this duet in kareoke bars and all the people who ask what song that was! This was one of the first country songs that really captured me, even though I don't care much for OK. lol.
My dad was a Oklahoma native, he always wanted to cowboy and rodeo and he loved this song He died as a after being a long time Fire Chief in S. Calif. I came to love this song tool
Truly one of the great yearning love songs. Missing each other and don't know what to do about it. Been there-done that- and experienced a love gone forever.
I grew up in Oklahoma. In 1981 when this song came out, I was in college in California, and my then-boyfriend (now ex-husband) was still in Oklahoma.
I'm now in the Pacific Northwest, long divorced, and he's back in Oklahoma again with his second wife, but this song still tears at my heartstrings in a way that very few pieces of music do.
Beautiful song, beautiful performance, real feelings.
@starsongweaver i grew up in s.f. bay area but fell in love withe someone from oklahoma, we broke up about the time this song came out, one of 'many' times we broke up and everytime i heard this song, i cried, even now, it makes me emotional.
Wonderful song. Reminds me of my (only) trip to the US many, many, long years ago. Everywhere we went---out West, in diners, in cities, --they seemed to be playing it. Never forget that trip
Brilliant song. Great singing, great lyrics and lovely melody. Just what makes country music great. I'm Irish and I just love this song. A true classic.
I've always felt this way (you're the reason) about my own "Okie." Love this song, listened to some other duets here on the youtube, but this version by Frizzel & West is still the best. Sometimes you can't improve on something.

Am A SouthEast Boy But spent time in OK and It is beautiful. At night the BIG SKY is FANTASTIC! would like to go back and visit some day.Great song too!!!
was driving in carmel,ca. with Clint one night and he was playing sound track to his latest movie and this was the second song and I asked him"where did you find this song?" and he said after the movie was made and we had to find a place because it such a special song.asked him to play it again! as wonderful now as then!!!
Always liked this song--that shelly sure was pretty back then-and good singers both of them---whatever happened to real country music like this--this crap they have out now ain't country music at all---sad! SAD! SAD!
Thanks for posting. I moved to Branson, Missouri after living in Oklahoma all of my life. This song makes me miss "Those Oklahoma Hills Where I was Born":(
beautiful song, fantastic performers. to me nothing is quite as relaxing as driving home from work in the evening in north sequoyah county this time of year with my elbow hanging out my truck window, looking out across the green cow pastures and horse pastures, while listening to great classic music, such as this, on the radio. anyone else ever felt that way? or am i just an old oddball?
There are some songs you love the instant u hear them, and this is one of them!My mom was born in Okla. City and lived and died in CA. so this song is about the beginning and ending of the life, state wise!Thanx!Such a beautiful song and fantastic singing by this awesome duo!
this is really good....lately i've been 'obsessed' with listening to classic country on my sirius xm satellite radio...and i find myself looking up some of the songs on youtube to hear again. thanks
This song is the reason i listen to country music today. (: The first time i ever heard it, my grandpa and grandma, who happen to be oklahomans, sang it around the camp fire.

beautiful song, fantastic performers. to me nothing is quite as relaxing as driving home from work in the evening in north sequoyah county this time of year with my elbow hanging out my truck window, looking out across the green cow pastures and horse pastures, while listening to great classic music, such as this, on the radio. anyone else ever felt that way? or am i just an old oddball?

To me this song sounds like 100 others until Shelly West busts it. She is what makes this song great, for me anyway.

This song is the reason i listen to country music today. (: The first time i ever heard it, my grandpa and grandma, who happen to be oklahomans, sang it around the camp fire.
