well, according to the plot, do you think those kids could've been as good as they were without sister mary clarence's leadership? the conductor is the figure head, the leadership, and without he/she, the whole project falls apart. primarily the leader is up there for moral support of the choir.

the conductor is there because if the choir starts to mess up they can conduct them back. the hands are to keep the beat and rhythm and show when they need to sing louder or quieter. as well as faster or slower.

i just dont understand whats the point of a conductor in a singing group. what do the waving of the hands mean. do they help the singers so they dont forget the words. someone know please do tell

Their hands keep the time, thus keeping the choir in sync with one another. If their hands move slowly, their singers should slow down, if they are fast, they speed up. Sometimes the conductor is mouthing the lyrics so they don't forget. And they cue the next person to sing etc. As you can see, Whoopi is doing the dance moves also, in case they forget.

@CookieFridays while you are correct, professionals do not mimic the dance moves OR mouth the words. They keep time, and (as you said) cue the singers at the appropriate time. It also is so that the singers know when beat 1 is. That is usually where the emphasis is in the meter.Also, they conduct in order to crescendo or de-crescendo. While a choir CAN sing songs with out a conductor it is better to have one as it ties everyone together and (ideally) keeps everyone on the same page.

@krimskrams well hey, I do like the movie... so I am biased towards whoppie's choir. and obviously it's a movie so they all sounded good. BUT I've heard and been in some smashing choirs(high school choir->uil winners for 10 years, not me.. just for high school years. And I was in a State Choir for a few years. We also had competitions across the usa, and over seas where we beat out competition.); so I ted to be a bit of a critic when it comes to choirs; no harm meant by it. :)

@lauallred i didn't question you're liking the movie or not, i know it's fake, but i was just wondering how an experienced singer as yourself felt about the other choirs since i found the other contestants to be great as well. further i find it amazing that anyone would participate in something that might portray them as second runner-up. i kinda feel like it's the fat chicks in married with children that have to endure the abuse or something of the sort. anway, my respects :)

The conductor help keeps time so the choir stays on rhythm and gives the choir hints to be louder or softer to make the songs more interesting and they also sometimes mouth the words so people wont mix the words up.

@drkknight85 Also, conductors help with the volume. Conducting with larger gestures means be louder while smaller gestures are quieter. It's sort of like a manual for how the singer should sing the song that they are singing. ( in speed, volume, smoothness, choppiness, happy sad, etc.) Also they are there to keep the choir from getting lost and falling apart like a shepard to his sheep. Conductors are REALLY important. I would know.. I'm in choir.

@drkknight85 Conductors are also like trainers or teachers in that the students do all the work but someone guides them, times them, notices mistakes and corrects them, sees where one person needs work etc. PLUS it gives the group a focal point so they are focused and concentrated. Also the conductor sets the tone of the choir and can choose songs, who sings what part etc hence different conductors tend to get different sounds out of the same choir.

I used to sing in a school choir - the teacher threatened to throw things at us if we ever took our eyes off her hands (she was an EXCELLENT aim too). It kept the singers crisp in ending segments. Raising the hand meant get louder, lowering meant softer, and the direction of the hands cued the correct section of the choir in volume and timing. Our teacher didn't sing with us, though. It was our responsibility to learn and remember the lyrics or we were out of the choir.
