In the last election (2008) the republicans say they want to repeal healthcare (which helps the poor) and they scared a lot of people to vote for them. They use the code word "entitlements" all the time but not tell voters they would cut soc sec/medicare (many of them also want repeal min wage). At least i never heard them say this directly. After they win they imm cut programs for poor and keep tax cuts for rich and spending for military. They lied to the public and should be voted out asap.

Medicare, Medicade and SS are not welfare - they are entitlements that those of us who have worked our whole life paying taxes into those programs are able to draw from them when we reach retirement age. You are paying into them too if you pay taxes - depending on your age, you will never see a return on your money.

Cenk needs to look up some facts. Private insurance sports nearly half the denial rate compared to medicare and also has way less fraud. yes it costs more, but if we are going to a voucher system, then the cost isn't going to you.
Why not make this sort of deal with the republicans: they can get the legislation and rights situation of 1811 if they so wish, but on the sole condition that the US territory would be adjusted to match.

The electoral results are chosen from the counted votes. And if the voting count hovers above 50% of the voting populace, then it is in any case a minority of the country that picks the next president (unless the vote is unanimous).

@tstruss912 rights are "man-made"? Obviously. So are states, and yes, all modern political philosophies accept property rights. They just usually give them to state instead of the individual. Some go as far as giving the majority of people (as opposed to a minority) rights over all property via democracy (although that has never been tried in real life either), but ultimately the only fair and consistent way to do it is to distribute property rights to all individuals.

Medicare, Medicade and SS are not welfare - they are entitlements that those of us who have worked our whole life paying taxes into those programs are able to draw from them when we reach retirement age. You are paying into them too if you pay taxes - depending on your age, you will never see a return on your money.

Eventually it won't matter when our dollar crashes.
No one will talk about the elephant in the room, economics. Are we really expected to keep borrowing from China to pay for healthcare here? What an insane system! We are going to have to default, like Ireland or Greece. The PBOC will have to dump their devaluing dollars so their savings don't deplete.
We could tax the top 10% 80% of their income and it still wouldn't be enough for universal healthcare, or even to fund current obligations!

The most disappointing thing about this is how people don't realize what's happening, couldn't give a damn, or pretty much agree because they're greedy. Sadly, there are two major causes of this issue: Cold War politics and voter apathy. Most people don't care about politics and don't follow it. This is reflected in the US having one of the lowest turn-out rates. To make it worse, our representatives act as if the Cold War is still going on.

@tstruss912 rights are "man-made"? Obviously. So are states, and yes, all modern political philosophies accept property rights. They just usually give them to state instead of the individual. Some go as far as giving the majority of people (as opposed to a minority) rights over all property via democracy (although that has never been tried in real life either), but ultimately the only fair and consistent way to do it is to distribute property rights to all individuals.

I'm not even aware of anarcho-capitalism working on a small scale. If you have examples then please present them. Spain and Argentina both have a couple hundred "cooperatives" up and running in unison and they seem to work great via the "one worker, one vote" system. I would rather like to see that here...

@tstruss912 see: property rights. The bank or car dealer owns the property it is loaning to me and so it can set conditions or refuse to loan it to me in the first place. The state has no legitimate claim to an arbitrary portion of every economic transaction made within arbitrary geographical boundries by default. If an organization can legitimately gain such rights, then there is nothing stopping me, the banks, or the car dealer from doing the same to you. I levy a 5% tax on you now. Pay up.
