umm people...a drum solo doesn't have to be musical or necessarily have a groove. Its a slice in time where you get the stage to yourself and wow the fans with all the stuff you've spent years perfecting in the basement. I've played for years and yes this guy would destroy me, but as they say... comments are like assholes... everyone has one. And in this post you will see that I am not alone with this comment.
@crazydamage415 I would agree...I can enjoy listening to phenomenal drummers like Lang (and others), but grooves tickle my ear - for example, listening to Bonzo's outtake of "Fool in the Rain"...
@alexeasby155 In one of his DVD's I saw him playing a ballad and his drumming was full of musicality, ellegance and taste, so I guess he's just not trying to show that kind of stuff off in this solo...
this guy is lame;his kit is so choked,it sounds like shite,and his groove sucks too ,very plain,and unimaginitivePlus he can't play his cymbals too good either, that's a dead givaway right there..........sorry
If you look closely you'll notice there's no other musicians playing with him. It sure does take a lot of skill to play by yourself. There's absolutely no application to this. Nifty trick though, he can twirl a stick and play by himself. Thanks Mr. Lang, you are AMAZING! Next...
@onceuponanASYLUM Awe, how cute, your feathers are ruffled. For me, and the dozens of people I play with, music is meant to be played as a group, in a non competitive manner. It's not who's the star of the show, it's how we all play together for a common goal - music. I'm not saying he can't play, that would be beyond foolish, but if everyone just played by themselves the entire world would just be jerking off! So, to reiterate, there's no application to this... at all!
Well I'm happy to hear that my cuteness inspires awe. I do think it's pretty hilarious that you've managed to rationalize your hilariously ignorant perception of music as a universal application. So I guess we can inspire awe in each other.
@onceuponanASYLUM Awe, you are just so darn adorable! I love how you're so ruffled about my opinion, it makes me blush. Thanks for taking time out of your day to prove whatever it is you're trying to prove. I'm honored, but don't you have some jerking off, I'm sorry, soloing, to do? - xo-
Is life difficult for someone who is incapable of discerning irritation for amusement? It seems like it would be hard in most cultures, but judging using your completely irrational perspective, I would guess that you come from some sphere of thought completely alien to any rational, established culture that anyone of import would be acquainted with. Perhaps I'll vacation there some day.
@onceuponanASYLUM You interrupted me, mang, that's no fun. Two replies to my one. Jeez, well then, I'll let you have your jerk off time, sorry to barge in uninvited. You soloists are always the same, me, me, me, now, now, now. You are a soloist right? Eh, no matter, I am done with this page, comment away about my irrational opinion on drummers playing by themselves in time signatures and tempo changes that any band would cringe at. Maybe not Don Cab, but besides that, you're on your own. Get it?
I get that individual musicians are what compose bands, you unfathombly stupid child. I get that mediocre musicians like yourselves like to assuage each other and reassure yourselves through solidarity that you are proficient and excellent in your self-created context. Do I get how you convinced yourself that anyone could ever take your opinion seriously? Not at all.
@Peartnoy518 what's that got to do with anything? You do know what an opinion is right? The last guy didn't quite grasp it and resorted to name calling. Maybe you'd like to follow suit? Better yet, lets make an analogy. Do you have an opinion on thieves? Presumable a bad opinion right? Well, do you steal from people? See, just because someone has an opinion, doesn't mean they have to perform the act they're making an opinion on. Just look at politics! My word, how many people critique that sh*t?
@hubitchacokov All I'm saying is that you shouldn't be criticizing him so harshly. This DOES take skill to do. And the stick tricks? That's all a part of showmanship. If you haven't noticed, crowds love them.
@Peartnoy518 Now you'd like to tell me what to do? It's apparent you don't understand what my point is. In my opinion, music is not meant to be showmanship, or about being the best in the world. It's not about competing and proving you're better than the other guy. It's about working together in a non competitive atmosphere with other people creating music. Soloing is not making music, it's making solo's. Alone. By yourself. Again, there's no application to it... unless you happy jerking off.
@hubitchacokov Neil Peart's Der Trommler disproves all of this. Music doesn't need working together. You can be a solo artist and make music. Look at Ben Konstantinovic's "The Journey". He's alone and is displaying amazing skill.
@Peartnoy518 and that's your opinion, again, this is mine. You're trying to prove something to someone who already feels a certain way. You'll never understand, because you're too busy trying to be right here. I'm stating that I do not like soloing drummers because I don't feel it's playing music. I feel it's so far removed from music, and it's boring because they try too hard. As a drummer you only need one skill - only one. Do you know that is? Do you know what a drummer is supposed to do?
@hubitchacokov Keep a beat and support the other musicians was a drummers intented job. But that's too boring and plain. There's a reason drummers have advanced over the years from Ringo Starr to people like Mike Portnoy. It's not just keeping a beat any more, it's the extra flavor to the song. And solos sound cool, are entertaining visually, and are fun. Why should you have such a prejudice against soloists? maybe Thomas Lang never tried being the best. You don't know if this is just for fun.
@Peartnoy518 at least you know what the job of a drummer is, that's refreshing. Buddy Rich was around long before Mr. Lang, this evolution of drummers doing solos has been around for decades. Buddy Rich played with bands too, he understood what his job was, but he could also solo like a madman. My original point, and still a valid point, is if you look closely, you'll notice there's no band playing him. Ever. He plays by himself. It's boring to me. If it was just for fun, why is he competing?
@hubitchacokov Competitions aren't always for self reassurance. If somebody told me I could enter into something like this, I would but not because I want to be the best, but because it would be the time of my life.
@Peartnoy518 true, they're also for money and recognition. I'm glad to know you'd enter in a competition to show the audience you can play by yourself. Keep practicing System of a Down and maybe you'll get there. I need to go now, maybe we'll pick this up later... probably not. -xo-
@hubitchacokov The System of a down cover is another good example. I didn't play it because it was hard. I played it because I love the song and it's fun. I'm playing Dream Theater and Protest the Hero, don't insult my level of skill.
@Peartnoy518 yet you can question my level of skill? ("Can you do this?") Yet you can tell me what to do? ("All I'm saying is that you shouldn't be criticizing him so harshly.") You should think twice before responding like you have. Don't fool yourself, you're a drummer, good job, congrats, but I'm not here to insult you. Do you really think I'm here to pick on you? Really? I was only here picking on Mr. Lang cause he doesn't have a band. A drummer with no band!? HA! Now that's too funny!
@hubitchacokov Does the fact that he doesn't have a band make him much different from any other drummer? He still can keep a beat. He can do what most drummers can do and more. He just chooses not to do it. Thomas Lang is an entertainer, and he's doing it well. And about what I said? When I said it I wasn't being an ass.
@hubitchacokov he's got two bands (currently with stOrk and Gianna Nannini...check them out....crazy insane drumming by lang with stOrk and simple, tasteful drumming with gn...he's also had many other gigs with different people (check his page on drummerworld)...i wouldn't call him an entertainer but he's a clinician...he shows people (drummers who attend his clinics) his crazy technical drumming and has them learn from that...but this man can do everything basically
@bestdrumstar FINALLY! Someone with a little insight, and not just ready to pounce on my already pouncing. Two wrongs never make a right. I'll be sure to check these bands out. THANK YOU!
At October 2011 I met Thomas Lang at a Clinic in Rotterdam - Netherlands. I can tell you from my experience, it's not only an marvellous drummer but a nice/appealing person to talk with aswell.

@crazydamage415 I would agree...I can enjoy listening to phenomenal drummers like Lang (and others), but grooves tickle my ear - for example, listening to Bonzo's outtake of "Fool in the Rain"...

@crazydamage415 Also, for some groove work, listen to Benny Greb 2005 Meinl Drum Festival part 2

alexeasby155 1 year ago 2
@alexeasby155 In one of his DVD's I saw him playing a ballad and his drumming was full of musicality, ellegance and taste, so I guess he's just not trying to show that kind of stuff off in this solo...

If you look closely you'll notice there's no other musicians playing with him. It sure does take a lot of skill to play by yourself. There's absolutely no application to this. Nifty trick though, he can twirl a stick and play by himself. Thanks Mr. Lang, you are AMAZING! Next...

@hubitchacokov
What?
Are you trying to say soloists are irrelevant or something?
onceuponanASYLUM 1 year ago
@onceuponanASYLUM Awe, how cute, your feathers are ruffled. For me, and the dozens of people I play with, music is meant to be played as a group, in a non competitive manner. It's not who's the star of the show, it's how we all play together for a common goal - music. I'm not saying he can't play, that would be beyond foolish, but if everyone just played by themselves the entire world would just be jerking off! So, to reiterate, there's no application to this... at all!
hubitchacokov 1 year ago
@hubitchacokov
Well I'm happy to hear that my cuteness inspires awe. I do think it's pretty hilarious that you've managed to rationalize your hilariously ignorant perception of music as a universal application. So I guess we can inspire awe in each other.
Look at all of the application your bullshit has.
onceuponanASYLUM 1 year ago
@onceuponanASYLUM Awe, you are just so darn adorable! I love how you're so ruffled about my opinion, it makes me blush. Thanks for taking time out of your day to prove whatever it is you're trying to prove. I'm honored, but don't you have some jerking off, I'm sorry, soloing, to do? - xo-
hubitchacokov 1 year ago
@hubitchacokov
Is life difficult for someone who is incapable of discerning irritation for amusement? It seems like it would be hard in most cultures, but judging using your completely irrational perspective, I would guess that you come from some sphere of thought completely alien to any rational, established culture that anyone of import would be acquainted with. Perhaps I'll vacation there some day.
onceuponanASYLUM 1 year ago
@onceuponanASYLUM You interrupted me, mang, that's no fun. Two replies to my one. Jeez, well then, I'll let you have your jerk off time, sorry to barge in uninvited. You soloists are always the same, me, me, me, now, now, now. You are a soloist right? Eh, no matter, I am done with this page, comment away about my irrational opinion on drummers playing by themselves in time signatures and tempo changes that any band would cringe at. Maybe not Don Cab, but besides that, you're on your own. Get it?
hubitchacokov 1 year ago
@hubitchacokov
Not at all.
onceuponanASYLUM 1 year ago
@hubitchacokov
But please, don't reform. Your overcompensations in tempering your envy will always be hilarious, I'm sure.
onceuponanASYLUM 1 year ago
@hubitchacokov So can you do this?
Peartnoy518 8 months ago
@Peartnoy518 what's that got to do with anything? You do know what an opinion is right? The last guy didn't quite grasp it and resorted to name calling. Maybe you'd like to follow suit? Better yet, lets make an analogy. Do you have an opinion on thieves? Presumable a bad opinion right? Well, do you steal from people? See, just because someone has an opinion, doesn't mean they have to perform the act they're making an opinion on. Just look at politics! My word, how many people critique that sh*t?
hubitchacokov 8 months ago
@hubitchacokov All I'm saying is that you shouldn't be criticizing him so harshly. This DOES take skill to do. And the stick tricks? That's all a part of showmanship. If you haven't noticed, crowds love them.
Peartnoy518 8 months ago
@Peartnoy518 Now you'd like to tell me what to do? It's apparent you don't understand what my point is. In my opinion, music is not meant to be showmanship, or about being the best in the world. It's not about competing and proving you're better than the other guy. It's about working together in a non competitive atmosphere with other people creating music. Soloing is not making music, it's making solo's. Alone. By yourself. Again, there's no application to it... unless you happy jerking off.
hubitchacokov 8 months ago
@hubitchacokov Neil Peart's Der Trommler disproves all of this. Music doesn't need working together. You can be a solo artist and make music. Look at Ben Konstantinovic's "The Journey". He's alone and is displaying amazing skill.
Peartnoy518 8 months ago
@Peartnoy518 and that's your opinion, again, this is mine. You're trying to prove something to someone who already feels a certain way. You'll never understand, because you're too busy trying to be right here. I'm stating that I do not like soloing drummers because I don't feel it's playing music. I feel it's so far removed from music, and it's boring because they try too hard. As a drummer you only need one skill - only one. Do you know that is? Do you know what a drummer is supposed to do?
hubitchacokov 8 months ago
@hubitchacokov Keep a beat and support the other musicians was a drummers intented job. But that's too boring and plain. There's a reason drummers have advanced over the years from Ringo Starr to people like Mike Portnoy. It's not just keeping a beat any more, it's the extra flavor to the song. And solos sound cool, are entertaining visually, and are fun. Why should you have such a prejudice against soloists? maybe Thomas Lang never tried being the best. You don't know if this is just for fun.
Peartnoy518 8 months ago
@Peartnoy518 at least you know what the job of a drummer is, that's refreshing. Buddy Rich was around long before Mr. Lang, this evolution of drummers doing solos has been around for decades. Buddy Rich played with bands too, he understood what his job was, but he could also solo like a madman. My original point, and still a valid point, is if you look closely, you'll notice there's no band playing him. Ever. He plays by himself. It's boring to me. If it was just for fun, why is he competing?
hubitchacokov 8 months ago
@hubitchacokov Competitions aren't always for self reassurance. If somebody told me I could enter into something like this, I would but not because I want to be the best, but because it would be the time of my life.
Peartnoy518 8 months ago
@Peartnoy518 true, they're also for money and recognition. I'm glad to know you'd enter in a competition to show the audience you can play by yourself. Keep practicing System of a Down and maybe you'll get there. I need to go now, maybe we'll pick this up later... probably not. -xo-
hubitchacokov 8 months ago
@hubitchacokov The System of a down cover is another good example. I didn't play it because it was hard. I played it because I love the song and it's fun. I'm playing Dream Theater and Protest the Hero, don't insult my level of skill.
Peartnoy518 8 months ago
@Peartnoy518 yet you can question my level of skill? ("Can you do this?") Yet you can tell me what to do? ("All I'm saying is that you shouldn't be criticizing him so harshly.") You should think twice before responding like you have. Don't fool yourself, you're a drummer, good job, congrats, but I'm not here to insult you. Do you really think I'm here to pick on you? Really? I was only here picking on Mr. Lang cause he doesn't have a band. A drummer with no band!? HA! Now that's too funny!
hubitchacokov 8 months ago
@hubitchacokov Does the fact that he doesn't have a band make him much different from any other drummer? He still can keep a beat. He can do what most drummers can do and more. He just chooses not to do it. Thomas Lang is an entertainer, and he's doing it well. And about what I said? When I said it I wasn't being an ass.
Peartnoy518 8 months ago
@hubitchacokov he's got two bands (currently with stOrk and Gianna Nannini...check them out....crazy insane drumming by lang with stOrk and simple, tasteful drumming with gn...he's also had many other gigs with different people (check his page on drummerworld)...i wouldn't call him an entertainer but he's a clinician...he shows people (drummers who attend his clinics) his crazy technical drumming and has them learn from that...but this man can do everything basically
