Nice try, Captain! Not obvious at all, nope. Love the 'oops, there are people here!' moment. 'Eyesex later. :(' And Rand's little glare of jealousy there made me giggle. McCoy, naturally, is by this point immune to and unfazed by the sexual tension.
Dude. Like. What. The camera cuts back forth between them gazing soulfully into each other's eyes, like, four times. You only do that when you're filming romance, people! I don't know if this is all loads of coincidence from trying to fill up 50 minutes of air time, or the entire crew was dicking with the audience, but JESUS.
Chapel looks like shes saying "get your hands off my man" at the end, and McCoy looks like he's embarrassed, like he's been watching something he wasn't supposed too...haha ;)
The best part is that it's never stated openly. It lets the audience search for clues and read into things.
Both Shatner and Nimoy, while not the greatest, are professional actors and smart, sly people. I wouldn't be surprised if they were originally simply having fun for themselves, tossing in little moments like this, thinking no one outside the production people would pick up on it.
I love how Spock and Kirk are flirting shamelessly and then you see Kirk's smile drop as he looks back over at random blonde woman and McCoy. It's like he's thinking "I am so getting som-Oh shit, audience!"
This just seems like a scene straight out of a fan-fiction. Seriously. You can see exactly what they're REALLY saying just with their eyes and their grins.
@ImaginarySanity Hm, that's funny. It wasn't this scene, but still - a friend of mine who watched a few eps of TOS with me and now is hooked on fanfiction was telling me about this KS fic she read, and described the backrub scene. I was like "no, that was in the show" and she went all "oh yeah, RIGHT!".
I'm calling bs on some comments that say they're just friends so slashers drop it. I mean really one guy is like unless they start making out they're just friends. Really? Like the only relationship that can have people love each other is one where they're constantly humping like rabbits. They loved each other and it wasn't a platonic love either. These men would die for each other, Spock did in WoK And Kirk gave up the one thing he is said to love the most the enterprise just to get him back!
It really was mainly the actors putting in this subtle homosexual undertones. I think that's great, too. This show was so far ahead of its time! I love the original Star Trek. Nothing beats it.
@ChristyDaae You are SO RIGHT. Seriously. Like, Nimoy's one line, "Thrusters on full," and the absolute *tenderness* that saturates that line. AND that line wasn't even in the script, but they gave Nimoy the go-ahead to say it anyway. That man is GENIUS.
@Abena20 LOL maybe so, but come on those dreamy stares are so intentional on the directors part. Especially :23 onward. The way he said captain is so unnecessarily seductive, and that look Kirk sent him. Come on, even if you don't want to see slash you have to see the humor in it.
To prove it here is Roddenberry's quote on "T'hy'la :
"The only difference was - the Greek ideal - we never suggested in the series -
physical love between the two, but we certainly had the feeling that the affection was sufficient for that, if that were the particular style of the 23rd century."
The romance was left out because of the homophobic attitude of the 60's that would have made the show unsuccessful - a homophobic attitude that you embody.
Oh, for God's sake. It's just bromance. You people need to shut the hell up with your gay fantasies. Any real Star Trek fan knows that Kirk is the straightest man in the universe; if he wasn't, he wouldn't be banging a new girl in each episode. You morons make me sick to my stomach. Just because they're best friends does NOT mean they're gay. Now, unless Spock grabs Kirk and shoves him against a wall, takes down his pants, and starts sucking on Kirk's face, I remain unconvinced by your bullshit.
@xBeatCity WOW, okay first of all, can we at least agree to disagree and please let us have an opinion? Second, Rodenberry already said their relationship was portrayed with love overtones, and that it didn't have a physical element only because "that wasn't the style of the 23rd century" ie THE SIXTIES. So please calm down and accept that, while you can be against it, we're not just making this stuff up, okay?
And thirdly, they're not gay, they're bisexual! XD
Actually, sorry to dissapoint you, but...yeah. You weirdos ARE making it up. Now I'm not going to repeat myself, so why don't you read my comment again, thoroughly this time. -_-
@xBeatCity - How are we making it up if we're quoting Roddenberry on the subject? Logically, if Roddenberry states that "Certainly with love overtones. Deep love." is present in the relationship between Kirk and Spock, if he *creates a word* (t'hy'la) to embody their relationship - and that word translates to "friend, brother, lover," we are supposed to accept that. Us K/S shippers just do so joyfully.
@xBeatCity - Okay, this is the part where I explain a little something.
Vulcans kiss with their hands (See Journey to Babel, The Enterprise Incident, and The Search for Spock). In The Motion Picture, there is a scene known as "The Sickbay Scene." In it, Spock grabs Kirk's hand and says, shaking their hands a little for emphasis, "This...simple feeling...is beyond V'Ger's comprehension.
If you really love the original actors as much as die-hard fans typically claim too, you'll accept their judgement and stop complaining about the nuCast that did a phenomenal job.
Sorry, I got carried away. It just drives me insane when people start ridiculous debates about this.
Anyways, this clip really does prove the love Kirk and Spock had for each other. T'hy'la indeed, Roddenberry, T'hy'la indeed! ;)
And no one can truthfully say that Pine and Shatner didn't have some correspondence. Upon receiving the good word that he was going to be cast as Kirk, he wrote a letter to Shatner asking for his blessing, which Shatner gave. The Original Cast are all happy with the actors chosen to play them (I'm certain Doohan and Kelley would've too).
To say that the actors didn't bust their ass to make the original cast proud is insulting. Nichols was very pleased with Saldana, Koenig and Yelchin are friends, Takei and Cho are friends, and everyone knows that Nimoy and Quinto struck up a close friendship. I'm certain Kelley and Doohan would be very accepting of Urban and Pegg, as well.
I don't know why everyone is making this into a life or death thing. TOS was awesome, it was my entire childhood and it's still a big part of my life... but nuTrek had me going to the theatre five times just to see it and I waited (impatiently ) for the DVD to come out, where I immediately threw down the money for the 2-disc special.
The only reason Shatner didn't go see the new movie is out of spite. I LOVE Shatner to death, but it's true. Abrams wouldn't write Shatner into the script (It would be hard to explain and not stick to the spirit of the whole franchise and he didn't want to offend anyone if it turned out bad.) Nimoy was hesitant to join the cast because of the whole thing, but he did in the end and he hasn't regretted the decison since.
And, on the whole nuTrek vs. TOS thing, stop complaining! Many people who don't accept the new cast don't accept them only because TOS has been around 40+ years and no one else has ever tried to play the characters.
I think the nuTrek cast did an excellent job and so did Leonard Nimoy. I trust Leonard Nimoy's judgement, I think he knows whether something is staying true to the spirit Roddenberry originally started.
I love Nimoy. So much. If this dialogue were just on the page, it would seem completely friendly and innocent. But he delivers it like a sleazy pickup line. XD
OMG! Really?!? They're just friends. Right. Just friends my ass. Friends don't GAZE at each other like that. They're totally eye-fucking. "And I'd really like to go back to the ship... Captain." WHOA. Okay, now that's not subtext at all. It's so canon. Something is happening here.
@ChristyDaae Nah, I don't think the cast was bad either. Actually, I think they have potential to be pretty awesome with a better director (yeah, fuck you JJ Abrams). It's not the lack of K/S subtext or whatever, if that's what you mean, but I simply think the Spock/Uhura romance missed the whole point of Spock as character and contributed to ruin his first impact as someone so alien instead of a human with pointy ears. Very disappointing.
I agree; Spock being an outsider is an essential part of his character. The thing with Uhura sort of stuck out like a sore thumb (I'll give him the turbolift scene, since he was ambushed, but snogging on the transporter pad in front of everyone seemed really out of place to me -- really Spock?) Personally I hope they don't continue the Spock/Uhura thing in the next movie.
You know, I've always wondered how much of this was on purpose and how much was just spontaneous. To be honest, I don't really see Roddembery saying "now you have eye sex and then you--". I also wonder if it was just how they understood their characters' relationship or if they didn't even THINK about it. I mean, sometimes Shatner overacts a bit, so I don't know. Either way, it's pretty obvious there's something slashy there, I just wonder what's the story behind it.
@marissolguerra actually, the actors themselves probably had a clue. For one, Nimoy portrayed a homosexual in a 1966 film, so we know he's open minded. On Memory Alpha it says that during the filming of the last episode, Shatner flubbed a line and reportedly blurted out instead, "Spock, it's always been you, you know it's always been you. Say you love me too." Not only that, but the writer of Amok Time and Shore Leave (!) was known for putting gay subtext in his work. Too many coincidences. :)
@yellowtoybox876 I did know about Nimoy (who has also been very vague about the whole K/S thing, I think) and that Theodore Sturgeon deliberately used gay subtext, but I did NOT know about this line Shatner said. That's freaking hilarious. Well, I suppose it's too much for coincidence, which makes scenes like this one even better and d'aww-worthy.
There IS also that whole "Shatner trying to pick up a guy in a bar" thing...*giggles*
The guy in question was from a rather famous band (the name escapes me), and he was so mortified by the thought of being hit on by 'Captain Kirk' that he ran out.
@yellowtoybox876 I think they had a clue, but when talking at general conventions and so on, they always dismiss it, and choose to talk about how "Kirk always got the girl" instead (when that's not how the series went!). Very frustrating
@marissolguerra And then there's my favourite Roddenberry quote of all time: "Yes, there's certainly some of that - certainly with love overtones. Deep love. The only difference being, the Greek ideal - we never suggested in the series - physical love between the two. But it's the - we certainly had the feeling that the affection was sufficient for that, if that were the particular style of the 23rd century."
Yes, he is talking about Kirk and Spock! Google it if you don't believe me :)
Pine was okay. I think the main problem with the character in the new movie was the dialogue. And the bright blue eyes were a little jarring. But the new Spock. Ugh. Soft features, straight, emotional, high pitched voice.... they practically destroyed the character.
no he didn't for one thing he should close his mouth for a change he looks like a goof with his mouth constantly open in the mind meld scene or the sickbay scene or the Delta Vega scene or the bar fight scene etc etc come on that's a facial expression you would associate with Kirk? then there was that cocky Kobayashi Maru scene. Shatner's Kirk was NEVER cocky! Pine was not the worst Pegg was but Pine was still really really bad
@altarboyzlover there is huge difference between being cocky and being decisive name one scene where Kirk is cocky in TOS or the first 7 movies or just compare how Kirk was talking about the KM test in WOK (while eating an apple by the way) and how that amateurish Pine behaves during the test clearly trying to show that he is such a BAMF Kirk never turned to Uhura and gave an order LIKE THAT that's not him that's clearly disrespectful unprofessional and childish
@altarboyzlover not much younger than what we see in TOS. A few years difference wouldn't explain such a dramatic shift. And it's one thing to be a good actor it's another to play Kirk/Spock/Scotty etc. well. What the original cast did was timeless. What the new cast did is so early 21st century. So cliched and in-your-face. You can see this type of acting all over the place nowadays. Particularly Pine Quinto and Saldasa. No subtlety at all like in this and many other scenes of TOS.
I think the people who worked on the new movie new quite well that no one could ever play the original characters quite as well as the original cast, and I'm guessing that's why they didn't only make the characters younger - it's also an AU. Pine's Kirk and Shatner's Kirk aren't the same character - they've had completely different lives. I think that was the writers way of saying 'let's give the kid a break'.
but if that Kirk is so different then what exactly makes him Kirk? Other than having the same name? By the same token they could have came up with any character attach the name Jim Kirk to it and claim that it is Jim Kirk.
Nuh-uh. Did you see the look he gave Quinto's Spock right after Pike left? Classic Ooh-Jim-wants-somebody-with-pointy-ears-and-a-greenish-complexion.
YES! I had noticed it too; glad I'm not the only one that thinks this is extremely slashy. The looks they give each other!! Not just, "Oh, yeah, we all want to get back to the Enterprise." That goes without saying! This little exchange is definitely imbued with additional meaning. Thanks for posting!
I love the way kirk switches back into serious-business mode in the end, like "whoooops, there are other people here?" Cracks me up every time. thanks for uploading this :)
@frederickbabyyeah I've always picked up on it, but in the early days I believed it was just my own obsession with slash (which I didn't know even existed!). So I was just happy with each scene where they portrayed a close relationship. Little did I know!
@iTrekz I just found something awesome. The vid is called Spock Bloopers & Special Scenes posted by SpockIsDreamy. 48 seconds in, there's a scene where Shatner screws up, and Nimoy puts his hand on his shoulder and says "it's all right baby". OMG Good stuff.
Eeek! I keep replaying 0:23 over and over. The way he says he wants to go back to the ship, and the way Kirk smiles like he knows what he means by wanting to go back to the ship...for some "private time" ;)
Wow. Very much wow. I had forgotten about this, and just... how can people say it's subtle? xD

You just made my whole time on the internet absolutely worth it, mainly because I could never find such a lovely answer to anything anywhere on here.
Well played, yellowtoybox876, well fuckin' played.

@marissolguerra First of all I laughed and giggles like a little girl after watching this. But i laughed even hard at :
"I don't really see Roddenbery saying "now you have eye sex and then you--"
made my day
Storms11 1 year ago
@marissolguerra And then there's my favourite Roddenberry quote of all time: "Yes, there's certainly some of that - certainly with love overtones. Deep love. The only difference being, the Greek ideal - we never suggested in the series - physical love between the two. But it's the - we certainly had the feeling that the affection was sufficient for that, if that were the particular style of the 23rd century."
Yes, he is talking about Kirk and Spock! Google it if you don't believe me :)

spock- *puppydogeyes*"...and I DO want to go back to the ship...captain."
kirk - *biggaygrin* "of course mr.spock."
sweet mother of moses this is DRIPPING in slash!!
Atlanta23410 2 years ago 10
I don't know abut anyone else, but for me this is the slashiest of the slash and the sexiest of the eyesex in all of TOS.
This is no other explanation for this moment other than they are sexing each other, big time back on that ship ;)

Anybody else notice that creepy dripping sound in the background?
Otherwise...I love this clip.

Pine was okay. I think the main problem with the character in the new movie was the dialogue. And the bright blue eyes were a little jarring. But the new Spock. Ugh. Soft features, straight, emotional, high pitched voice.... they practically destroyed the character.

Bill Shatner is the master of innuendo and covert flirting. Just a certain look from him and you know he's thinking naughty.
t2j0h09 2 years ago 25
that pussy Chris Pine could never do this Shatner is da man!
sondano 2 years ago 4
Hey hey now don't hate on Chris Pine, he did a good job.
altarboyzlover 2 years ago 8
no he didn't for one thing he should close his mouth for a change he looks like a goof with his mouth constantly open in the mind meld scene or the sickbay scene or the Delta Vega scene or the bar fight scene etc etc come on that's a facial expression you would associate with Kirk? then there was that cocky Kobayashi Maru scene. Shatner's Kirk was NEVER cocky! Pine was not the worst Pegg was but Pine was still really really bad
sondano 2 years ago
Kirk IS cocky, you can't see it in Shatner's work?
Wow, you must be really blind, his whole character seems cocky.
But thats ok because Kirk is supposed somewhat cocky.
In the new movie maybe more so, because he is young and thinks he can rule the world :)
I think Pine did a very good job, and I'm pretty sure Shatner did as well.
If he didn't I think he would have said something by now.
altarboyzlover 2 years ago
@altarboyzlover there is huge difference between being cocky and being decisive name one scene where Kirk is cocky in TOS or the first 7 movies or just compare how Kirk was talking about the KM test in WOK (while eating an apple by the way) and how that amateurish Pine behaves during the test clearly trying to show that he is such a BAMF Kirk never turned to Uhura and gave an order LIKE THAT that's not him that's clearly disrespectful unprofessional and childish
sondano 2 years ago
It is an underlying thing, and anyway the new movie is a young version of the characters.
So he is going to be cocky, I said the same thing before.
They all are good actors, just because you like TOS better then this one doesn't mean this cast is bad.
altarboyzlover 2 years ago 3
@altarboyzlover not much younger than what we see in TOS. A few years difference wouldn't explain such a dramatic shift. And it's one thing to be a good actor it's another to play Kirk/Spock/Scotty etc. well. What the original cast did was timeless. What the new cast did is so early 21st century. So cliched and in-your-face. You can see this type of acting all over the place nowadays. Particularly Pine Quinto and Saldasa. No subtlety at all like in this and many other scenes of TOS.
sondano 2 years ago
I'm not saying that the original cast wasn't timeless.
They are.
But I think that the new cast did a good job, and obviously Shatner and Nimoy thought they did a good job.
Leonard Nimoy picked Zachary Quinto himself to play Spock.
If you are talking about subtlety in a slash sense then of couse there isn't going to be any.
Alot of people don't like that kind of stuff(I do but thats just me)
They had to write the movie so that it would appeal to as many people as they could make it.
altarboyzlover 2 years ago 3
@sondano
QueenMegaera 2 years ago
but if that Kirk is so different then what exactly makes him Kirk? Other than having the same name? By the same token they could have came up with any character attach the name Jim Kirk to it and claim that it is Jim Kirk.
sondano 2 years ago
Shatner has never seen the new movie, nor wants to watch it despite JJ's attempts to get him to do so.
NewAngel4eva 2 years ago
Nuh-uh. Did you see the look he gave Quinto's Spock right after Pike left? Classic Ooh-Jim-wants-somebody-with-pointy-ears-and-a-greenish-complexion.

*squees and flails like crazy*
This is EXACTLY why I love this fandom.
The fact that we don't even have to make any of it up!
IT'S SO THERE.
TheTroubledTribble 2 years ago 20

And I do wanna go back to the ship... if you know what I mean.

I, too, missed this the first time I watched the episode! I can't believe it. It's so hot!

I love the way kirk switches back into serious-business mode in the end, like "whoooops, there are other people here?" Cracks me up every time. thanks for uploading this :)

OH FOR CHRISTS SAKE. i still dont understand how people DONT PICK UP ON THIS!!!.. *squees queitly in corner*
frederickbabyyeah 2 years ago 116
@frederickbabyyeah I've always picked up on it, but in the early days I believed it was just my own obsession with slash (which I didn't know even existed!). So I was just happy with each scene where they portrayed a close relationship. Little did I know!

Jesus.. listen to Spocks voice. Like whiskey smoked dark chocolate velvet...
(..but in my head he's hoarse for other reasons)
*naughty grin* <:D

@iTrekz You just described Spocks voice SO perfectly..... I am intensely in love with him. I don't mind if Kirk wants him too though... We can share
mangalover32 1 year ago 4
@iTrekz best description of his voice EVAR. kudos!
Romperjet 1 year ago
@iTrekz I just found something awesome. The vid is called Spock Bloopers & Special Scenes posted by SpockIsDreamy. 48 seconds in, there's a scene where Shatner screws up, and Nimoy puts his hand on his shoulder and says "it's all right baby". OMG Good stuff.
lmvanillarose 1 year ago
Eeek! I keep replaying 0:23 over and over. The way he says he wants to go back to the ship, and the way Kirk smiles like he knows what he means by wanting to go back to the ship...for some "private time" ;)
