the solder joints r weak in these xboxs, so when the motherboard warms up, the x clamps cause it to warp, which makes the solder joints break. at first i did this, and it worked for a week or so, then it broke again

removing the xclamps only shifts the pressure placed on the chips, causing them to get a good connection.

the xbox 360 doesn't always need to be hotgunned.

Yes in some cases removing the xclamp help.

But its not really needed on all systems, the xclamp was never the issue. it is the cheap solder or bad soldering of the MFG plant.

Your video card is dying or dead. Unless you open up your xbox and fix it , which will void your warranty, all you can do is call 1-800-4my-xbox

But I think it a little monotonous to show several minutes of a wagging heat gun. I see it. It's a heat gun. You're warming the processors and their respective contacts. It will fuck your 360 up, especially the nyko ones...replace the standard ffan with a better one...and meybe get an additional ffan inside on the heat sink, visit the xbox-scene website for tutorials and help

duckman, i have the same problem, the 3 red ringgs of death. i tried the towel trick, it does it, my 360 was able to boot up, but after 5 mins, it freezes again. no matter what it is doing, playing mp3's and playing games, all the same. i ask a store nearby, and they said they could fix it and install water cooling system, do u think that's a good idea?

only if they give you a 2 year warrenty and will repair it at no cost in the event it should brick again. Water cooling is expensive and if your going to put out that kind of money you need to protect your investment. otherwise i would just say hold off until the 360 falcon is released, wait a year to see if the design defect has been fixed and then buy one.

If you choose to have the water cooling done, make sure the people doing it are experianced with both the 360 and PC water cooling, Also have them tell you which brand and model number parts they will be installing and then do a search on google by entering that information.

Check to see , how much they sell for and how they compare to other simular products. This will give you a better idea if your being overcharged and if the person installing this

is recommending the right product.

Can you clear this up for me!? First you heated up the board without the thermal compound on the cpu and gpu chips?! Then after it was cooled off you added the thermal compound and turned it on and it worked?! Let me know thanks

exactly, you need to clean off all the compound 1st so you dont cook it when heating up the GPU & board. After the board cools you add the new compound and assemble.

I did the 12 penny fix (look it up online) and it works like a champ.  No need to go through all this heating trouble. LOL

12 penny fix was worth about 12 pennies for me. It worked for a day or so.

If you are going to do the penny fix, you might as well just add copper memory heatsinks, I did and there's no harm in adding, but doesn't solely cure the heating issue.

you know , i get the same question asked all the time, This has ben answerd before here, I would recommend that people take the time to scroll down and flip through the pages.

However i will quickly sum it up for you, the 360 overheats and warps the mainboard which causes the GPU connections to seperate (3 red lights) Laying the board flat and reheating warps it back to normal as well as repairs the solder connections on the GPU.

Dude, they don't all they have are these: WAGNER W914 240 Volt HEAT GUN 1400W. Ive asked if this has settings, it does but just setting 1 and 2?? I need the one with all the settings on so i can do it properly. I'm sure i don't really matter wot heat gun you use, but i wanna be sure im doing it correctly, just fussy that's all.

This works! i just completed repairing my 360.

1) the "x-clips" are a b*tch to take off and even tougher putting back on.

2) TOOLS:

1)heat gun:wagner 3500, lowes $45.

2)torx set that includes T8 & T10'S.

3)Arctic Silver 5 (THERMAL COMPOUND)CompUsa $12, much cheaper on their website ($4)

5)when i first rebooted afterwards, it gave me two blinking lights (overheating) it was one of the xclamps that needed to be tightened.

I had the 3 red lights and freezing but I fixed my system a bit differently. I removed the heatsinks and old thermal compound. Also worth noting is that the heatsinks were loose which probably caused the freezing since the chips were overheating.  Anyway I cleaned everything and applied arctic silver to the chips. Next I used vinyl washers and bolted the heatsinks to the motherboard. Haven't had a red light since and my system has also been running at cooler temperatures.

hey I'm just adding that you can dremel out an inch or so of the heatsink fins and install the fan at near the same height as the fins. You can install the drive in te case no problem. Also you have posted the best tutorial on the net. Thanks.

I did just like you told in guide. Only thing what I didnt do, was that I didnt place the GPU fan. But I replaced the regular case-fan to talismoon whisper fan.

This has worked Perfect for most people, read the comments on Part 1 of this Video. Its important to do everything and that it is all done correctly.

You also need the right tools like a commercial heat gun. Just do exactly like the video and it will work Unless you have a differnt error code or problem. This is for the GPU error code 0102 and sometimes 0020

you hold down the disc tray button and the sync button at the same time and record the corrorspoding red lights 4 red lights=0 3=3 2=2 1=1 i got 4 red lights then 4 again then 2 then 4 which is 0020 error code

I have had alot of people follow my instructions and fix there system, only like 2 got the 3 red lights back within a few hours, Come to find out they didnt do everything i stated, 1 person didnt install a GPU fan & the other didnt clean all the old compound off. This method does work 100% but it has to be done fully & correctly. So take ur time and only do it once. Peace

Honestly, fixing it yourself is the best option because regardless if MS sends you a refurb or free or $150 this is only going to happen to the new one in due time also, then your right back to square one.

Depends on which one it is. If its the DVD drive then just replace the Drive. If its SouthBridge chipset then it MAY be just a bad connection on that chip. What i would try 1st is appling presure on that chip while booting up, if it boots up with presure applied then go ahead and use a heatgun on that chip to repair the connection. becarefull that chipset was not made to withstand as much heat as the GPU or CPU.

However if you attempted to Flash the Drive (360 hack to play copies etc) then most likly your drives firmware is toast and the drive has to be replaced.

Hey iTzRiPPiN , Flashing your firmware sometimes causes the drive to Brick , now considering the DRIVE is actualy hardware and it Fails due to a bad firmware switch you end up with a HARDWARE FAILURE lol only differance is its a differnt failure which requires the drive to be replaced. The GPU failure can be fixed with a heat gun.

If you flashed your drive and then got 3- red lights, check the error code to find out which is the problem, 0102 is the GPU not sure off hand what the drive is so do a search for 360 error codes. Again depending on which hardware failure it is, Drive or GPU you will either replace the drive or fix the GPU connections.

0021 DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard.

The white one was givin to me by a close Friend who bought a new one because this one also had the 3-red lights. I offerd to fix it but he said keep it and bought a new one. Anywho i was asked in the Xbox forums to do a video on how to fix it, so i recorded fixing this one. Works great now :) packed it away cause i can only use one at a time.
