This documentary basically covers the first two months of my social studies curriculum. Too bad it shows boobs and peepees. Can't show it to my sixth graders. It's also too bad that Nat'l. Interresting. I have this book and have been looking up answers from not only his (anti-racist) perspective but from a eugenist and racist perspective. Why do you think that genetics or social darwinism played a part in the success of peoples? Im just curious what other people think.

Well, my more detailed view on this would be that at the early points, it was mostly luck, just like Diamond says, but if you're talking later on in history, individual mindsets have played a very large role in successes and failures.

Basically, individual qualities are what ended up determining what happened when the civilizations advanced, while in early development, it's location, location, location.

Yali is a New Guinean who asked of Jared Diamond, who has frequently visited New Guinea, why the "white men" had so much "cargo" (New Guinean term for advanced goods) and why the New Guineans had so little. Some very race-sensitive people might be offended by this. Jared Diamond is basically a big-time academic. Check him out on Wikipedia. He answers Yali by saying that due to geographical luck, some areas have been better for agricultural growth. Easier farming freed up time to make "cargo."
