Wow, I can't believe it! I lived in Hillbrow from 1972-77. I worked at the Barclay's Bank in the Highpoint Building and frequented the Fontana in the basement, and the Paradise Cafe. I walked up and down Hillbrow for years, and remember passing the Chelsea Hotel a hundred times. I have lovely pictures of Jobert Park, and I do remember that impala fountain. My best friend lived in Yeoville. I recognize these streets and businesses. It looks like a thousand years and a few nuclear wars later.

It's heart breaking. We should have voted "NO", eh? But democracy has no place in Africa. I grew up in and around JHB and can tell you that the city has been in decline for decades now. It was already a slum when I left in 1994. Sanctions and boycotts had taken their toll on the Witwatersrands' mighty industrial megapolis. Don't trust all the vids esp if marketing JHB. So why trust mine? Well, I lived and worked there for many years. I breathed the air and tromped the streets. I actually saw those buildings with my own eyes. Many of those buildings are infested with illegal immigrants and fires often break out causing no end of mayhem. The streets in Yeoville are FILTHY (when scarcely 25 years ago they were pristine . Whilst courting my wife we used to go "Mamas Tratorria" now sadly decayed)

I do feel embarrased as an American that we were so harsh on the Apartheid government. Given the US's history on race issues, it seems very hypocritical. We lost a key African ally by pushing majority rule. Thatcher and Reagan knew this would happen, but we just went along with the sanctions.

This is very slanted, there are parts of American cities that look like this. I walked in those streets of Johbg for 6 months, and yes some of them are that bad but there is also a regeneration in some parts of the CBD. Besides, if you left SA never to return what do you care about it anyway? Focus on London, UK or wherever you stay instead, I hear they have problems of their own. Poverty and the culture of brutality under apartheid bred what you show here.

Well - I can see nothing I or anyone says will reconvince you. Six months did not make me expert, but these are areas I got to know rather intimately. Hillbrow was indeed bad, but the CBD and Yeoville much more mixed. There are parts of CBD like Carlton center, Sauer and Jeppe corner, and others that are full of life, at least during daylight hours.

Pictures like this can be taken in any city in the world if you look for this sort of thing. Johannesburg is a vibrant and pleasant city, and many parts of it are truly beautiful. People who present it as a rundown city have a certain agenda, they are more than likely white racists with a fairly low IQ, & full of fear. I am a white South African in my sixties, & have never had a bad experience or been threatened by people of other races, and yes I do go to Jo'burg and soccer matches.

@Colly849 I am Brazilian and I knew Johannesburg for the first time in 1985. It was a trendy place. Hillbrow was simply incredible. I loved Jo´burg and still have beautiful photos of the town. I knew it and experienced with my own eyes. Now, in this video I just cannot believe how some places I passed by and sidewalks I walked along are now. Sad really. Hope it regenarates.

There are other parts of Johannesburg that are truly beautiful, and I am not only referring to the opulent suburbs.
