I thought he was from Vakhsh (now in Tajikistan). Balkh then was a province. There was no Tajikistan or Afghanistan then. The political border was different.
Did he not write: "Not Christian or Jew or Muslim, not Hindu Buddhist, sufi, or zen. Not any religion or cultural system. I am not from the East or the West, not out of the ocean or up from the ground, not natural or ethereal, ..... I belong to the beloved, have seen the two worlds as one and that one call to and know, first, last, outer, inner, only that breath breathing human being."
@mitralara Thanks, For reminding us to enjoy Rumi,God has no religion, we all want to enjoy Rumi and other great poets who were so lost in their love for God and not in religion.

@kianoosch Mowlana jalaluddin Balkhi Rumi was not iranian because at that time there was no iran so you can not say Mowlana jalaluddin balkhi was iranian
@TheAfgProud1 how could you say that there was no Iran in that time? 800 years ago the medieval geographer Mostowfi wrote: چند شهر است اندر ایران مرتفع تر از همه Some cities of Iran are better than the rest, بهتر و سازنده تر از خوشی آب و هوا these have pleasant and compromising weather, گنجه پر گنج در اران صفاهان در عراق The wealthy Ganjeh of Arran, and Esfahān as well, در خراسان مرو و طوس در روم باشد اقسرا Merv and Tus in Khorasan, and Konya (Aqsara) too. Conclusion is Mowlana was born in Iran
@IranMarzban iran came into being 50 years ago i mean the name iran before it was persia so dont say iran was exist before iran is taken from the old name of AFGHANISTAN ARYANA and Mawlana Was Born In Balkhh and BALKH is now in AFGHANISTAN so dont give stupid comments
if Iran came into being 50 years ago, then why ferdowsi, who lived 1000 years ago wrote about Iran, using the name "Iran" in sentences such as "cho Iran nabashad, tane man mabaad". Also why did Geographet Mostowfi use the name of Iran 800 years ago: "some cities of Iran are better than the rest".
@IranMarzban hmmmmm who knows may be it is written after iran came into being it was Persia PARS before now it is iran i dont have any problem with iran or iranian but the reality is reality Rumi Was born in Balkh
these are historical documents, not forgery my brother. Even Rudaki has named Iran. That Iran changed it;s name in 1935 is a misinformation. Iran only asked to be named as how the people of Iran name their countries for thousands of years, it was only to tell the western countries to use the correct name, since they used the wrong name ("persia"). It is true that Rumi was born in Balkh, even Zoroaster was born in Balkh.
The Zoroastrian book "Arda Viraf", written at least around 1400 years ago mentions: ..."the wicked one, in order to made men doubtful of this religion, instigated the accursed Alexander, the Roman, who was dwelling in Egypt, so that he came to the country of Iran with severe cruelty and war and devastation; he also slew the ruler of Iran"
So the name of Iran is bent yoused of at least 2000 years.
Hakim Meysari born in 935 A.D. has a written an important Persian treaty on medicine in verse. In the beginning of the book he uses the name of Iran:
"I was undecided to write in Persian or Arabic Then I told myself that our country is Iran, and the majority of its people speak Persian, thus if I write in Arabic it is not right".
Back then there was no Afghanistan no Tajikistan! From Euphrates to Punjab There was one land Called Eran Zamin! Shapur e Ardeshir Wrote this in 3d century A.D. in 3 languages.
Rumi is not at all Tajik or from Tajikistan. By birth he is from Afghanitan, Balk province. People from Balkh choose their last name as Balkhi so did Rumi.
He wasn't a kid when he left Afghanistan but there was some problems between his father and the king of the time so he and his family was caste away from the land. At the time he was adult and a well-known poet in the country!
....Later he learned a lot from Shamz Tabrizi who was from Tabriz, Iran. During this whole time Turkey had nothing to do with Rumi nor Tajikistan....however, he resided in Konya, Turkey :)
Rumi is Universal, do not attach the label of nationality or ethnicity upon him. His love and message has no language, or borders, that divide; Rumi unites, a true believer, an awesome teacher. Learn to love from him.
@Javinax I agree with your point about nationality/ethnicity/religion, but his words have a language which is inseparable from his msg. Like it or not, when his words are translated into any other language, they lose a great deal of the beauty, & meaning. No other language is as fitted as the Persian for mystic poetry due to ambiguity, flexibility and rich vocab of the Persian language. so his msg does depend on the language...
@soreno32 Why is it important to make that distinction? Should we not concentrate on our similarities, rather than differences? What does it mean "his origin is not" universal? Who cares? Stop arguing about things which will only make you angry.
Stop this separation.
Sit down with each other at the table, drink some tea, listen to music and poetry, talk about goodness in life, open your heart to love.

reading the comments of you guys makes me laugh at you guys and think that u guys never studied his life story. he's originally from balkh, khorasan which is today's afghansitan. he wrote all his poetry in farsi. BEAUTIFUL FARSI RUN IN HIS BLOOD, LOVE FROM KHORASAN"AFG"
Who cares where he comes from. I don't think Rumi would have liked to be segregated like you did, after he said "Come, Come, Come....who ever you may be....." You guys are really not honoring what Rumi stands for
This caused the biggest sadness in mevlanas life... I hope you got the point... But if not, just go on... Because like Mevalana said: There is a reason, why people like you exist. For everything there is a reason and Allah is in all of us...
On the day Mevlana died, all the people who lived with him and with whom he shared his wisdom suddenly begun to dispute with each other.Everybody wanted to claim his body and his legacy...He spend all his live to show humans that what we think is important is actually NOT important and showed people that u can find allah/god everywhere, you just have to free yourself and open your eyes. And as the people did at his funeral, u read his words and you still keep arguing about whos got the bigger one?
U dont understand anything he tried to tell us. U all dont deserve to write under here in relation to his name!!! This is not the place for having an argument about things of this kind... On the day of his funeral, people managed to stop disputing because someone made them understand and the crowd confirmed that Mevlana is like water, like air, like the sun! Everybody has the right to refer to him, everybody can claim the right to share Mevlana!
So Jews, Muslims and Christians carried his corpse on that day, without killing each other! So,at last? Will you also be able to forget your human reasons?
And open your eyes in order to understand what his words try to tell us? Stop insulting him and each other... Maybe one of the most hated things by Mevlana was enviousness! People killed his best friend, because they where jealous about him sharing so much time with him and not so much with them like he did before, they tried to own him.
U r not persian, but if you are persian then u r very ignorant.
I can see the level of ur education in what you wrote. No wonder why Persians and other ethincs are being discriminated in Afghanistan. That is because of some coward and fools like you. Try to know ur real idenity.
Let me clue u Bro
Afghanistan is a name by UK to this buffer zone(Greater Khurasan). It wasn't even created by pashtoons. Afghan is take from afghan, grandson of first king of Israel, King Saul.
It is not our fault thought. Sounds like you have been living whole ur life in USA and your parents might have left afg long ago either. Besides, you have been million times like: ma afghan astim bachim berenj bokho lol jk
Bro if you are persian then read some book about atleast 100 yrs of Afghanistan and see how much we have been discriminated in the name of not being Pashtuns.
If you are pashtun then u r dumb and I have no words for you.
kushans. everybody discriminates against everyone. but let me tell you something. we are a New generation of Afghans and we will build a united Afghanistan no matter how much u outsiders divide us. we know that the Taliban is being supported by the Quds forces and we know how much our neighbors fear our potential in the modern era that they will do anything to divide us. by the way, u keep telling me to look up things in the dictionary.
You got to know urself first. Who are you and where did you come from. Ur real ID and real rights, then you can easily get along with other ethnics and nations. That is what happend in EU.
with a fake given ID you will get no where. We persian in afghanistan are pretty flexible.
Mongols called us Tazik=Tajik we accepted that and most of us still live under that fake ID. Now pashtoons=Afghans, to have more credit in the world, call us afghans we accept that too. we are cowards
well wake up and look this up or go to the United Nations that Afghan is a National Identity not an ethnic group. I also need sources that are 2008 updated from u not a source from 100 years ago. u also must be a very lonely person because it seems like you have never communicated with pashtoons yet u your self dicriminate against them. Have you ever had a conversation with a pashtoon or are you still butt hurt from 300 hundred years ago becuase they stopped Iranian invasions.
It shows lack of ur education regarding what is going on inside afghanistan. You depend very much on United Nation and whatever been fed by pashtun leaders regarding real idenity of different ethnics in Afghanistan. Pashtun claim so much and one that is that they claim they are 60% of population while there never been any door to door survey. I am pretty much proud of my persian ancestors.
Iranian Invasion?
U have been sourced out Bro. U got to know the term of being Iranian first.
He is from Afghanistan, why do Iranians are always trying to steal everything from us. why???????????????????. He hope some day the American people don't claim that he was from Washington DC and he was friends with Bush...
In general nobody refers himself as being Afghan=Awghan in Afghanistan except Pashtoons.
It is a foreced Identity by English to this area.
Afghan is another alternative name for pashtoons which has been used since their migration to Central Asia from Israel.(Check internet for AFGHANA, KING SAUL)
Besides, "Afghanistan" was mentioned for the very first time in English conventions in 19th century. Before that it was always called Khurasan even during Ahmad Shah and Timur Shah kingdom.
If you don't knwo about these terms. refer to internet or some library to get more information about who you really are. who isis AFGHAN, AFGHANA, KING SAUL,LOST Tribes of Israel.
The Theme is of Indian song, "Mujh Ko Is Raat Ki Tanhai Main Awaz Na Do". Of course it's been palyed great but does not suit the video. The video is far better.
When his wife died, Mevlâna married again and had a son Emir Alim Çelebi and a daughter Melike Hatun. On 1 May 1228, most likely as a result of the insistent invitation of 'Alā' ud-Dīn Key-Qobād, ruler of Anatolia, Baha' ud-Din came and finally settled in Konya in Anatolia within the westernmost territories of Seljuk Empire.
Mevlana wasn´t turkish. He was a 13th century Persian (Iranian) poet, was born in Balkh (in present-day Afghanistan, then greater Persian Khorasan), and died in Konya (in present-day Turkey)he went to Baghdad,Hejaz and through Damascus, Malatya, Erzincan, Sivas, Kayseri and Nigde, finally settled in Karaman.married Gevher Hatun.
karabag, you sound like a typical Olagh Turk. A Tajik/Persian could be a shia, sunni, christian, jew, atheist, agnostic, etc. What religion has got to do with race? People can convert, revert and leave religions all together. Mawlana was a Tajik from Balkh and majority of Tajiks in balkh were and still are Sunnis. When Mawlana's family left balkh and settled in Konya, back then the poeple in Konya were not turks, they were Chrisian greeks. Farsi was the lingua franca of Konya back then.
Yes Balkh is a province in Afghanistan, but the name Afghanistan is fabricated and imposed by the British. People of Balkh like Mawlana are tajiks and they consider themselves Balkhis, Tajiks, khorasanis, Aryans and eastern Iranian. They want to get rid of the despicable name Afghanistan since its totally an alien name to them.
soreno is right!!! mowlana jalaludin balkhi was born in balkh aryana/afghanistan so he belonged to the piece of earth that is today called AFGHAN ZAMEEN!!!!! for example, if an german would ask you about his heritage and if you answer to the german that mawlana is from somewhere else other than afghanistan, then the german would never know about his origin and his heritage!!!
you have to say he is afghan/tajik !!!!!!!
becouse there are different races in every country!!!! ;))
sorry...he wasnt turkish ;) get over it! seriously, why must ignorant bafoons like u exist?? huh? Everyone knows that he is persian born in balkh! k.. thnx!

shame on you! go and read about his philospy first. He was greup and inspired in Anatolia when he enlightened the world. His grandchildren live i nTurkey now and they r so proud of being TURKS
I caution myself not to feel proud about the fact that he comes from my hometown Balkh, I fear I may hurt his great soul. He indeed belongs to humanity with no geo-racial boundaries. Following him is the only way we can overcome the current crisis the world faces.
Hi Ksoeberg, this song is originally from Ahmad Zahir the late legendary musician from Kabul. It is a shame I cannot tell you who sang it instrumentally here though I heard it many times in Afghan media.
He was born in Balkh he was an Iranian Persian Tajik. FACT! But he never said I am Tajik to feel superior but he liked all people in the world peace! He is born en he is originally out Balkh Persian city! Don't make propaganda! KILL YOU MOTHER FUCKERS DIEVES!
Rumi King of mystic and founder of derwish dancers; the dancers of divine. Get your dancesteps to your deliference, divine and enternal light with the wisdom of Rumi.
Khalil Gudaz is a Tajik from the so called country of Afghanistan. The name Afghanistan is illegitimate which was imposed by the British in 1879. Farsi language and culture is what most ppl in Afghanistan identify with and majority of the people want to get rid of this british imposed name-Afghanistan. They want to their country to be known by one of its real and original names, Khorasan, Aryana, Bactria, Eastern Iran.
Thats all good, but dosnt change the fact the Balkh is in Afghanistan and maulana was born there and Khalil Gudaz calls himself an Afghan. You should take it up with Mr Gudaz himself
This is what Mawlana Rumi says about Olagh turks, Turk Khandedan greft az dastan, Chashmi tangash gasht basta han zaman. translation; Turk started laughing about the story, his tiny eyes eyes closed themselves from the world at that moment.-- So Mawlana Rumi acknowledges the tiny eyes or oriental features of Turks in his poems while Rumi as a Tajik Balkh didnt have that kinda of feature himself.
wikipedia is a community knowledge base. Why don't you edit the wikipedia articles with your reliable and historical source at the bottom and then I'll be convinced! fare enough huh? you will do your fellow Turkish friends a favor as well so they won't try to convince others all the time that bananas are vegetables coz they are long like cucumbers!
So because Wikipedia does have some errors does it mean that it can not be used? I am sure that is much more right than wrong. You should read the article there and then comment if it is wrong or right.
feruzusmon, so what??? ancient persia is regarded as the ancient land extending from india and modern uzbekistan to turkey and egypt including many ethnicities such as turkish, tajik, afghan, mongolian, arab .... calling them persian means at their time they were living in the persian land! it does not mean they speak farsi in Khorezm today. so chill!
and wikipedia is by far the most reliable source on the net. plus you can always check their sources.
Do the christian world put such bade comment against each other who lives in europe only the muslims do that, so when will pakistan let go of the 1/4 Afghanis they are holding illegally? and the afghan are busy arguing with each other
I am amazed at what the evil brits did to persia. afghanistan, tajikistan, iran, and parts of many other countries in the region were one and the same country. for god's sake you are still speaking the same language! yet you fight about the ethnicity of mowlana! how sad!
can you guys STFU and enjoy our poet who care where he was born and who cares where he died, i dont care where he lived, who he got merried to what language he spoke all of you bickering like idiots are either here to CAUSE DIVISION between brothers or just ignorant villager.
have a nice day
MAY ALLAH HAVE NO PATIENCE WITH THOSE WHO CAUSE DIVISION to serve their evil agenda.

Mammut2020 3 years ago
U dont understand anything he tried to tell us. U all dont deserve to write under here in relation to his name!!! This is not the place for having an argument about things of this kind... On the day of his funeral, people managed to stop disputing because someone made them understand and the crowd confirmed that Mevlana is like water, like air, like the sun! Everybody has the right to refer to him, everybody can claim the right to share Mevlana!
Mammut2020 3 years ago

Tawab,
It is not our fault thought.
Kushans 3 years ago 2
kushans. everybody discriminates against everyone. but let me tell you something. we are a New generation of Afghans and we will build a united Afghanistan no matter how much u outsiders divide us. we know that the Taliban is being supported by the Quds forces and we know how much our neighbors fear our potential in the modern era that they will do anything to divide us. by the way, u keep telling me to look up things in the dictionary.
Tawababalkhi 3 years ago
No Bro,
You got to know urself first.
Kushans 3 years ago 3
It was so hard for you to accept that you are ignorant and dumb Tawab.
Finally you have just proved it by your words.

well wake up and look this up or go to the United Nations that Afghan is a National Identity not an ethnic group.
Tawababalkhi 3 years ago
Tawab,
It shows lack of ur education regarding what is going on inside afghanistan.

Tawab
In general nobody refers himself as being Afghan=Awghan in Afghanistan except Pashtoons.
It is a foreced Identity by English to this area.
Afghan is another alternative name for pashtoons which has been used since their migration to Central Asia from Israel.(Check internet for AFGHANA, KING SAUL)
Besides, "Afghanistan" was mentioned for the very first time in English conventions in 19th century. Before that it was always called Khurasan even during Ahmad Shah and Timur Shah kingdom.

Its played by Mashar, a famous afghan artist from Mazar Sharif, the new city on the old ruins of Balkh, where maulana was born..

Mevlana Celâleddin-i Rûmi says that:
Bigâne megrit mera ezin kûyem
Der kûyi şûma hane-i hud micûyem
Düşman neyem ez çend ki düşmen ruyem
Aslen Türkest eğerçi Hindû gûyem
I hope that will finish the discussion about Mevlana's nationality.

He was a 13th century Persian (Iranian) poet, was born in Balkh (in present-day Afghanistan, then greater Persian Khorasan), and died in Konya (in present-day Turkey)he went to Baghdad,Hejaz and through Damascus, Malatya, Erzincan, Sivas, Kayseri and Nigde, finally settled in Karaman.married Gevher Hatun.

btw, there are still some debates whether molana was even a muslim. he was most likely a spiritual man rather than religious.
here u are talking about shia vs. sunni
ddd0dd 4 years ago
karabag, you sound like a typical Olagh Turk.

Persia, to be specific, in Afghanistan. Balkh is situated in Afghanistan.
THESIS100 4 years ago
Yes Balkh is a province in Afghanistan, but the name Afghanistan is fabricated and imposed by the British. People of Balkh like Mawlana are tajiks and they consider themselves Balkhis, Tajiks, khorasanis, Aryans and eastern Iranian. They want to get rid of the despicable name Afghanistan since its totally an alien name to them.
