They use stagger for that. The outer wheel is narrower making it a taller tire on the outside than on the inside helping it drive around the corner easier and turn. They will also space that wheel out or in depending on the length of the track to help them turn.

You can hear the tires kind of making a squalling sound as the car is rolling down the hill. With the tires being different circumferences and the axle turning the same speed on each side of the rear of the car, one or both of the tires have to give or slide across the ground somewhat since the car is still going straight. The larger tire is trying to cover more distance that the smaller tire can at the same revolution speed.

The right rear being bigger than the left rear is called stagger. Stagger makes the car want to turn left easier as long as the car dosen't have a differential in the rear end of the car. If you take a drinking cup that has a bigger top circumference than a bottom circumference like what you would get in a drive thru somewhere, lay it on it's side and roll it. The cup will not roll straight. Same principle here. Most all cars that race on an oval will have some amount of stagger.

@blowingsmoke That's called stagger. Basically if you take a round drinking glass and role it on the a flat surface, you can see the principle of stagger.

@dpstark456 Its called stagger. The RR tire is always bigger on the right rear to help the car turn in the corners, because in circle track racing you always turn left you can use stagger. Track conditions depend on how much bigger the RR is. For example on a very slick track you want the rear tires to be closer to the same size so you dont spin out as easily.

back when i was a kid and my dad owned a sprint car that was my favorite thing in the world to be next to his car while it was idling....this video sounds F'N good but for those of you who never experienced in up close in person this video does it no justice! no disrespect to the poster by any means... but the ethanol burning your eyes and nose and the vibrations literally hitting you and the sound deafening your ears but you dont dare cover them because you loved it all!!!!

I know a lot of the super late model motors....and late models are 14 and 15:1so I'd say you're about right. 30 years ago this was unheard of...I don't see how the head gasket stands it...Good stuff!
