I believe the generally held fact is that Hitler had the Waffen SS protect the monument from vandalism. I don't know if there was a full-time honour guard or not, but Hitler had an appreciation of the monument since it wasn't boastful of the Canadian accomplishment but was instead a sombre tribute to the fallen.
@StarshipPoopers1 That's a lie, hitler respected the memorial and canada. Theres photographic proof of leather-coated SS bowing at the vimy ridge site, even in hitler's quotes hitler never said anything about canada all he said was churchill wouldn't come here for sanuary because canadians would beat him up..The jewish media and our apparent allies said hitler destroyed the vimy ridge memorial, to get canadians incited and angry against hitler and that was a lie hitler never touched the thing.
@1988scottcarey Nothing that you said has anything to do with what I said. I urge you to read comments before raging about conspiracies. Yes, there were reports of the monument being destroyed. Hitler saw to it that photographs were released showing that the monument hadn't been destroyed, and visited it himself (there is photographic proof of that as well). He had the monument protected. Regardless of what his comments or thoughts were of Canada, he clearly respected the memorial.
Possibly one of your best uploads, Skoblin. Magnificent. (The Canadians on parade at Westminster Palace is excellent, too) There's the photo of Hitler in front of the Vimy Memorial a couple of months later, but is there a snipet in one of the Battle of France Wochenschau's? The British newsreel of its inaugeration in '36 by the soon-to-abdicate King is interesting, too.
I'll have to search through them to see if Hitler is at Vimy. It is a remarkable monument. There was a documentary on the building of it on CBC. Quite interesting. Significant cost over-runs because the designer refused to allow any changes to his original design. Very stubborn...the end result...sublime
It is a little known fact that Hitler actually placed an honour guard at the monument after France fell in 1940.
