@poster12345678 lol! you made me laugh mentioning how you ran. I did that same thing only to this. When it came up I would see all my lives gone and know I had no more coins and then would dart out of the arcade as quick as I could before the continue screen even came up. This was a pretty screwed up thing for a kid to see really I guess it might not happen now in an arcade game I don't know but this little continue scene haunted the shit out of me when I first saw it when I was around 7.

Do you remember or have played the arcade version of Golden Axe?

Now THAT was sick (in a disturbing kind of way). I remembered when I was a kid, I played it and the death screams of the bad guys really scared the crap out me and I left the machine before I even finished playing it. Not to mention, during one of the intro scenes in the game, Ax Battler decaps an enemy. Not a nice thing for a kid to see.

@poster12345678 ya I remember Golden Axe I think if there was blood in that game it would had been 100 times worse but the principle of hacking and slashing was powerful enough. Not exactly child friendly.

I trying to think of other screwed up continue screens. Final Fight springs to mind but that was not too bad but still I think you could do without a kid viewing it lol! anything else you used to play that was screwed up? lol

The Japanese version of the Genesis (mega drive to us ) game: "Last Battle" was pretty bad.

Basically, everytime you hit someone, they would fly off the screen and their heads would explode in bloody red splats.

I remembered playing it at a friend's (who's a few years older than me) house when I was a kid.

I tried to avoid the graphic scene by moving away from the enemy as soon as I hit them but it didn't work.

Definitely not for children or the faint hearted.

Sword of Sodan for the genesis/mega drive was also pretty bad.

Whenever your char is killed they will scream (rather blood curling) and there's lot of blood pouring out of them.

There is also a particular "giant" enemies which you have to kill by bringing them to their knees, and then you have to decapitate them. If you don't do this, they will come back to fight again indefinitely. Although they're not bosses, they still block your progress so you do have to deal with them.

There's also predator 2 for the genesis/MD. The predator will stalk and kill hostages offscreen with his laser weapon. When hostages are killed, you see body parts and stuff as they blow up.

Aliens 3 (again Gen/MD) if you don't save hostages in time, you get a nice gruesome scene of the chest bursters appearing out of the victims.

Of course there is Mortal Kombat and Weaponlord etc. But I was already old enough by the time these games came out so it didn't bother me.

Same feelings about this Game Over screen growing up, but sadly it wasn't the worst that ever scared me. Altered Beast was the epitomy of video game horror in my eyes back in the day. The screaming of the man turning into a Werewolf was enough to scare me away from the arcade cabinet. I swear I never had the courage to actually play that game until 1991 when I got my first (and still first to this day) Sega Genesis.

The creepiest thing I saw in an early 80's arcade was this one game, I don't remember the name of it but it was a first-person shooter set in the 1930's where you shot gangsters. If they shot and killed you it would show a close-up of your character's dead, glassy-eyed face with blood trickling from his mouth. I was just a kid then and it was really unnerving. O.O

I, like many others here agree, this was one scene that forever will stand out in my mind's past of many arcade trips, as this was the only game I'd really even touch more than anything. But I think I took it a bit far when I once got my dad's buzzsaw out and tried to re-enact this continue screen with an action figure I had..fun times.
