I understand the confusion of the preceeding posts but I'd like to make a slight clarification:
That was Peter Graves in this film, not JR 'Bob' Dobbs.
I understand the confusion due to the understandable assumption that only 'Bob' would be so stupid as to wander around for 3 minutes peeking through a door crack with his pipe sticking 6 inches out of his mouth.
I don't think the problem lies so much in underestimation of Bob's intelligence but rather an Overestimation of Peters..

Yes. It is frightening. "Bob" is never careful, so he was probably going to just get a snack.

What is Bob so paranoid about? And what's behind that other door? This raises more questions than it answers.
