@rossboy70 I've always been puzzled as to why she doesn't get the credit she deserves. It's been suggested that she makes it sound so easy ... which of course it isn't. Maybe thats it - everything she did seemed to just flow with ease. At any rate... she definitely deserves much more attention than she gets. At least she did receive a life time grammy. Thanks !!

She was without a doubt the most natural singer. She sang a song as if she was spontaneously telling you something with music that was from her mind & heart. Not written.

And she sang each and every line just as you'd speak it. The same conversational manner of singing that backed by the magnificent voice with unerring stylistic choices always knowing when to sing with restraint & when to let loose & belt & yes she most certainly could.

It was those qualities she shared with only Nat King Cole

Well - thats what I really love about Doris - her interpretation of a ballad is better than anyone. And - I think you're right - if people listen to a couple of her songs -- they're amazed and want more. I've converted my husband ! He listens to Doris in the car now !! So much feeling in the song, particularly in that last "hap-py..." Both Day's and Garland's interpretations of this Comden/Greene/Styne classic are far more moving than Streisand's latest offering. Sorry Babs. As for Day, she remains the most underrated talent in Hollywood history. That no "honarary Oscar" has been bestowed on Day remains a giant shame - SHAME - on Tinsel town.

Have to agree with you ... their versions are better than Streisands. I really love this song by Doris - so true in her expression of this. And - yes - Day is very underrated ! Look at how long it took for her to receive a lifetime Grammy award ! YES -- SHAME SHAME on the academy ! I don't think they'll give her one in her lifetime ... she won't go pick it up and they're kind of tacky about that !

i understand Doris decided to stop performing so as not to overstay her welcome. She said more or less that when her voice started to go, so would she. I imagine her voice must still be pretty awesome. Sure, she wouldn't be sweet little Doris Day, but I imagine a mature Doris would still be a tough act to follow, like the older Edith Piaf and Judy Garland.

From an interview with her son Terry - she decided to not renew her Columbia contract in 1968 because she felt music was changing and she had her day it was the next generations turn AND she felt her voice wasn't quite the same and she was a perfectionist and didn't want to continue if she wasn't top knotch in her opinion. Terry thought she still sounded terrific and could have continued. I'm sure she could have and would have sounded good to us...but maybe not to herself.

Also -- I have to say - I have great respect for her on this - it saddens me to see some performers go on and on when they should retire. She had the high moral fiber to say - I'm not up to my standards so I'm not going to do this anymore. And I don't think she had the ego that required audience adulation to make her who the person she is. Thus her ability to walk away from Hollywood and lead a completely different life for the last 35 plus years. More power to her !!
