  • Tatang Ilustrisimo is still awesome and his fighting skills were second to none. Training with live blades was normal for many Eskrima Arnis Kali practicioners and as real as it gets.

  • 1:16 bad ass lol

  • why should anyone use sharp knifes in demo?

  • I can beat up tatang with my Jiujitsu and I'm going to give him a lovely tatang arm bar, or a nice guillotine choke :p

  • @kurtz905 i doubt it. people of all different arts fought Tatang, and lost. many died

  • FILIPINOS SHOULD BE PROUD THAT THE CONQIUSTADORS COULD NOT QUELL THE FLAME OF KALI OR WHAT YOU MAY CALL IT FROM THE VEINS OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE

  • lol wat makes me sad is we Filipinos try to learn other martial arts instead of kali, eskrima, arnis and all tht or simply our country's martial art

  • @jbel867: Well, the problem is that it's not really easy to find a Doce Pares school, or any other Escrima school for that matter. If there were more Escrima school around (as there are Muay Thai gyms when I went to Thailand to train Muay Thai), then people would PROBABLY be encouraged more to enroll. I grew up in the rough streets of Manila and saw no school of Escrima in the Sta. Ana/ Paco area. It is unfortunate but it is the truth. If only we had more schools and money. :)

  • This aint fighting.....This is Murder! lol

  • Amazing martial art..I'm visiting your beautiful country this year. I hope to learn and take home some more skills..Thankyou, Jason...(New Zealand)

  • Mr. R. was one of Master Illustrisimo's top student.

He could have been head of Bak.

  • CebuanOs`Pride .! . From CEBU . .

  • Very cool!

  • Mmmmm i'd like to those fighting techniques against my bullet.

  • @nwsrocker I'd like to see your bullet vs a nuke. What's your point?

  • @nwsrocker

i dont think you even have a single bullet.

  • Centuries before Magellan, the Philippines already used swords and knives in tribal wars. The Filipino concept of clannicide (killing an enemy and his entire family up to the nth degree of consanguinity) really forced Filipinos especially the muslims from the south and the igorots from the north to man up. What are shown in this video are nothing compared to the skill level back then when real lives were at stake everyday. Imagine being called out to fight to the death by a bolo wielding Pinoy.

  • @sasapat

What are you talking about? Do you have any video of this LOL

It's impossible to say that Tatang was any less skilled than these "mythical" super-pinoys. I think you'll find he was involved in numerous "fights to the death by bolo wielding pinoys" and people of other races too.

if what you say is true than Mindanao and Northern Luzon would have a living history of Eskrima. Why is it that Eskrima is mostly found in Cebu and other coastal areas and not in Mindanao / Northern Luzon?

  • @sasapat imagine being hit by the poison dart of the sumpit, or taking the bagakay to the eye,or feeling the sting of the arrow. All without ever knowing from whence they came.Let's not forget the Aeta the islands first inhabitants.

  • What's John Cleese doing there?

  • PILIPINO!

P.S the white guy in the background is such a pussy GO GRANDPA

  • PILIPINO!

  • Thank You! This is a great video demonstrating Tatang's skills!

    Great respect for Tatang!

  • The Old man is smooth!

  • look like bullshit!

  • ang tinik naman nung matanda, swerte mga apo nyan matuturuan ng mahusay

  • why dont britain have a martial art... barjitsu or w.e it is never really made it...

  • @Brady2k10 You people in the west have this medieval sword fight, boxing and wrestling. Those are fighting styles too. I don't know about England as such, but the Irish have Bataireacht, the French Savate and the German fencing schools are world famous. So, there might be some traditional school in England as well, right?

  • @GaolisVideoLog welll i know for a fact we also have fencing schools and ours are world class too, but i dont really consider fencing to be a fighting style, its just sword fighting, its a sport for the rich, we have boxing too and i guess that is a fighting style but its not our own, like everyone has a boxing gym somewhere, in germany, usa etc. i mean like an english martial art. There was one called barjitsu or something but its not really known anymore

  • @Brady2k10 they do its called "Catch As Catch Can" its a submisions wrestling system started in Wigan, the place it started in is world famous.. I think it was called the Shed.. as far as weaponry martial arts Im not to sure about that...

  • im learning this at p.e. class.. so cool....

  • would just like to ask..who is the long-haired master speaking on this video? because he seems very knowledgeable about a lot of things about different styles of kali.

    not just 1 particular style...wow.

  • wala yaN TATANG

  • Well, the best way to defend against a grapple is to choke your opponent to death..That is by no means a sporting move..

  • Thank you for this video as I only have photos of Antonio Illustrisimo from when I met him in 81 in Manila. He seems to have gotten better even though he was 90 when this was shot!

    Erle Montaigue

  • Dude you just nearly lost a toe

  • kinda relaxing to watch skill like this

  • hahaha...that last part was classic!

it's like the white guy goes in for the hug and the old man is like negative...kali choke.

  • How did he disarm him at 4:39 ?

  • That's called KANTI.. a hidden esoteric form of STD.. Slight Touch Disarm. The gaze is the secret to successfully employ DOYD.. Disarm OR You Die.

  • Fantasti footage, it is also good to see some more of Grandmaster Tony Diego

  • this is rare and also well done. i like the white guy jumping in the backround when they drop the weapons

  • Yeah, hes really jumpy and although i presume him too to have an escrima background you can se he is literally afraid of "the old man". Much Much respect for these two masters.

  • Haha holy shit Tatang is fuken insane his moving around like his 30 years younger lol that white guy was shitting himself at the start

  • Tatang is awesome. And that one dude is sporting a mullett

  • Eskrima rocks - one of my top picks of martial arts to learn.

  • Beautiful. True mastery.

  • Salamat kaayo! Wala ko kabalo nga bisaya si Manong Tatang. I was listening closely to the conversation and heard them speaking in the cebuano dialect, I always thought that Tatang was from the Luzon, thanks for posting this vid.

  • Hi, actually tatang was born in bantayan island in cebu. he resided in manila when he was working the ships

  • go cebu!

  • Hi. Thanks for this featured video. I had a sort of awakening as I discovered the martial arts style my deceased father had practiced back in Cebu. And I realized how fascinating it is compared to more sporty martial arts. I'm looking for a school in Manila Philippines. Would you be able to point me to one? Thanks!

  • A number of Tatang's top students, now masters and grandmasters teach in the NCR. Email here on FB for more info. Or if you feel lucky try showing up one weekend morning in either QC Circle or the Luneta. Also the UP campus. Expect to walk around for a while, ask questions, be nice and you might find the instructor you're looking for.

  • Not only do they train with swords, but also they train for instances when you have no weapon and the other guy has a blade. The reason for this is that the weapons culture is hugely embedded in the country where this art originated. The disarms they deploy are incredibly destructuve. When a knife attack is neutralised, regardless of whether you as the defender are armed or not, the genuine application involves disabling or breaking the hand to 'defang' the serpent.

  • Ilustrisimo escrima is a total martial craft as one of the seniors describe it. It was meant for war and mortal combat, not show or sports. Techniques are very straightforward and efficient . To the untrained eye, it looks boring. Having wide or lawhag movements is not allowed, you will easily be reminded of this during sparring (it usually comes with pain).

  • They don't mess about - because they assume the attacker wants to kill you. The attacks are also executed at break neck speed. The empty hands applications of this art are genuinely mind boggling. It is a highly intelligent martial art, and the old dude in this vid is one of the founding fathers of a fighting style that is highly respected.

  • This must be an old public access show, from somewhere. They just don't make TV like they used to. Very basic but captivating. Very informative and entertaining, I give it two thumbs up!

  • ahahaha the white dude is always hit by the sticks

  • Like the movie TAKEN these FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS application is phenomenal. Taken's movie Fight Coordinator/Technical Advisor Mick Gould a highly skilled to this technique and have done a great job to make the movie much at edge than Bourne Identity. To date, British Special Air Service (SAS) as well as US Navy Seals are especially trained to this kind of technique.

  • I show nothing but respect towards tatang.

it would suck to be his kids or grand kids though. you know how filipino dads and grampas hits us when we are younger to dicipline us after our moms get too angry.

if i was his kid i would've done everything and if he told me to graduate highschool in 2 months i would do it LOL.

  • Heh thats not just a filipino practice(hitting your children). Most non-European countries(Nigeria for example) do the same.

  • hahahahaha i feel you dog! i still remember gettin hit with a backscratcher from my Lolo....

  • tangina ayos!

  • ang talagang magaling eh yung hippie!!!!!! see how agile he moves?

  • Reminds me of when i was in Cebu near Carbon market last year. I witnessed two teenagers try to mug an old dude, believe me they wont try it again! I dont think I ever seen such a quick dispatch of an attacker outside a boxing ring and that dude had two to finish off! I'm moving to Cebu from the u.k soon anyone know where I can find a teacher there? I dont think my 20 years of various martial arts can match this style, especially when it comes to knives.

  • Hey man, just curious, under what circumstances are you moving to Cebu? Did you find work?

let me know if you need an email address to reply to?

  • this looks very much like John LaCoste! Makes me realize how much Illustrisimo Kali he did.

  • wtf, are they using a real machete for this demonstration??? 1:16 you can tell they didn't want to lose a limb/toe... lol

  • ang lutong ng mga patama! lol!

  • wow! tatang really kicks ass. i bet he'sd guy who killed ferdinan magellan and not lapu-lapu in the battle of Mactan. i really like the POLICE ARREST TECHNIQUE.... its awsome!

  • yup tatang said that he killed more than a hundred japanese soldiers during the war. i seriously think that he killed more people during peacetime..

  • you would be surprised though they're very deadly these people are probably gonna be the friendliest people you meet

  • So true.

  • That guy probably killed heaps of Japanese in WW2

  • my granpa knew this stuff and used it in WW2

  • what culture is this from ????????? please hit me back

  • philippines

  • o.o the old man is amazing

and I honestly think that this one of the best features of our culture. =D

  • LOL @ 1:23

"by the way i'd like to mention that they're using sharp blades"

then Mr. Syok Larraga responded "yes we're using sharp blades" LOL hahaha.. like it's no big deal while keep continuing w/ it. Hehehe....

  • I would what that man on my side, is a dark alley or anywhere for that matter. Itsure sucks for the thugs, to screw with that, senior citzen. Awsome video clip.

  • These guys are scarey without knowing how well they can handle their wepons. Now knowing their ability would you want to be their enemy? Not me!

  • 03:00 - 03:05

    Lolololololololz

    Hahahahahhahahaha!~

  • The master is very cool indeed. Very laid back because he CAN be!! awesome

  • Very Good. The old man does it. No disrespect meant... very cool to see somone demonstrate the art not the sport. my greatest respect to The Grand master

  • so true.martial arts are a way of life and takes commitment and should not be objectified like a menial sport in the old days against the spanish invasion the kali stick was all the phillipines had and they made somthing out of it and here it is today eskrima

  • ITAK OR ATTACK ORRIENTED???

  • I believe he said "itak orientation", focus is on weaponry (blade orientation).

Itak is like a long blade, so he says that his art is primarily based on the use of edged weapons.

  • It is very buetiful. i teach it very similar although I never met the man. I think it is good to see. everyone should take note of this

    video

  • w0ot lakas ni tatang

  • ...i think he meant "sick", not...sick.

  • "sick" in a positive manner, yes ?

  • the best par is the end where he just chokes dude! this vid is sick.

  • True that. The style is wicked sick XD.

Simply one of the best FMA styles out there =)

  • @pogibearx123 and for the grapple? Yeah you can grapple him.

    Ok... uaaaaaaaaah! haha!

  • Filipino Martial Art was utilized by famous filipino warriors specially lapu lapu that was responsible in depicting the courage of filipino to the world, a vivid illustration of this galant act was the demise of ferdinad magellan in the battle of mactan with the used of this martial arts.

  • Master siox is our visiting master teacher at philippine college of criminology, if you wanna meet him just drop by at Philippine College of Criminology specially every saturday,Siox is a respecrted and season martial arts guru, long live glaraga for propagating Filipino Martial Arts!!!

  • Thanks for an interesting video.

Just one question though, where those live swords they were using in the beginning? I'm a bit unsure at this point.

  • They used live blades during the beginning of the demo. Tatang Illustrisimo (old man on the left) demonstrated his skills on his partner, but fearing injuries, they switched to wooden blades later. The host in the middle mentioned it during the live sparring demo session. Hope this helps you understand.

  • The only way some one would have got injured, would have been if Tatang intended it ;)

  • I don't think you understand how brutal and dangerous that art is, it is expected for even an experts to get cut during a fight. I mean just look at the vid, even that American guy was scared they might hurt each other (or himself -__-!)

  • I understand all to well my friend. Tatang's control was perfect - even at 90. If some one would have got hurt - it would have been because Tatang intended it as such.

  • yeah i agree, the old mans control was really flawless

  • @Relikvie Just look at the reaction of the guy at the back when it was dropped 1:15 and you'll know they're real blades, hehe

  • @komski2 Yeah, I know. I made the comment because the guy at the back mentions this about one gazillion times through the video, just in case anyone hadn't heard. :-)

  • hahahh he almos cut hes foot hahah!!... he really shoudnt stand there, the two master might cut him!!... mabuhay!!!! to u all

  • perfecto!

  • Tatang...enough said! Mabuhay Kalis Ilustrisimo..Mabuhay baHad zuBu.....salaams to all.

  • i love fma the deadlist martial arts in the world

  • what's fma?

  • Filipino Martial Arts

  • ohhhhhh. i c

  • if that guy in the back tells me they are using real swords, i might have to use one on myself, kiddin.

  • There definatley Kamagong sticks, very heavy! i have a set and two sets of tiger wood sticks to fight with.

  • That fat white guy is annoying.

  • yeh he jumps like a little girl when the stick hits the floor lol

  • some FMA guys like to disarm the weapons at certain observers for shits and giggles...lol!

  • That old man is the shit!!! They don't make people like him no more, it's like he's got ruthless aggression pumping in his veins.

  • amazing!! tatang was using kamagong sticks instead of rattan. kamagong is a much heavier stick and it'l be like wielding a lead pipe. at that age his hands and wrists are still very much resilient. Mabuhay ka Tatang Ilustrisimo!!

  • yo this is the funniest shit i have ever seen in my life .... Tatang looks drunk from too much Tanduay hahaha

  • wow! at age 90!! by the way it sounds ... those sticks are SOLID and he just wacks it like breadsticks! lol.

  • I would love to learn this, we use the parang and similar weapons in a different way

  • I feel very lucky to have trained on several occasions with Tatang, Tony Diego, and Christopher Ricketts. Tatang was deadly, (as are Diego and Ricketts) but very kind as well.

  • Maganda talaga! Magling!

  • Very nice, to have worked with GM Illustrisimo. regards, Greg

  • LOL he nailed that dudes foot with the stick

  • anyone practicing kali illustrisimo in the states? are there more videos out there starring tatang?

  • Great post ! Keep it up.

  • Tatang your the man!!!

  • Very nonchalant = lethal.

  • Any one know where I could buy these videos (if they are for sale)? I have seen a bunch of these and they are great. I would love to have these if nothing for preservation of the art.

  • wish i could have the videos myself, but the sad reality is is that these vids are really rare and pretty much impossible to find on the net, much less purchase this video as the company that made them are now non-existent. =X

  • If you make it out to Manila there is a shop in Binondo where you can find it. And another place where you can train with GM Tony Diego who many see as his heir to the system.

  • wow Grandmaster Antonio Ilustrisimo has a crazy past. I read in the Martial Culture book all about it. he is definately one of the greatest . the berdugo (executioner) of japanese spies during WWII

  • Does anyone know where I can learn this in San Diego?

  • Master Christopher Ricketts has been living in San Diego for a few years now. He is one of the top students of Tatang Ilustrisimo

  • If you haven't found out yet look up Christopher Ricketts. Sorry if I mispelled the name. I never trained with him myself but I hear he is one of the best teachers of Tatang's art.

  • Moustache should have worn construction boots,LOL

  • was it just me or that last arm movement to block the kick look like wing chun? It amazes me how many arts can seem different , but operate on similar principles depsite their origin being from around the world.

  • actually yes. the left hand aka the live hand/weak hand is there to protect your center line... the same way it is used in wing chun although footing is different.

  • Sheeeeeiiit! That old man could kick my ass!

  • A top notch old generation master of his art!

  • sana lolo ko sya...

wag nyo patulan mga lolo sa pinas

  • Tatang ang galing mo!!! bow ako sa iyo.

  • Filipino Martial Arts will easily destroy kungfu, shaolin, taekwondo, and other stup*d east asian "dances"!

GO MALAYSIA, PHILIPPINES, INDONESIA!!!! LET THE WORLD KNOW OF THE SOUTHEAST ASIANS... THE MALAY RACE!!!!

  • bilib ako sayo bilib ako sa lahi ko MALAY UNITE!!!!

  • it can be sport if you use sticks instead of swords/knives

  • solid video.. im proud to be a filipino!!!

  • As you should. A beautiful culture that also knows how to kick ass.

  • Only a fool would make a slag comment against these guys..in Manila you would already be dead..they have open challenges in Rizal Park..if you feel you have taken up enough of the earths oxygen then go tell them to their face..

  • I'm Filipino, this boosts my pride alot. I would love to learn this!

  • This is not a sport this is purely combat.Deadly..this art is quite common in Mindanao...

  • si tatang nang tutuli pala.

  • i know somebody must have old clips of my grandfather

GM Regino Elustrisimo escrima clips. Please post if possible on youtube.

    -his grandson sam

  • whaddafxup with the white fag? he jumps like a girl everytime the knife drops.

tatang is OG. reminds me of my lolo!

  • Why is he a fag and, why to you feel the need to be so rude in your comments?

  • my bad, not fag, just a pussy. why do you feel the need to reply to my comment?

  • Because I was offended by the rudeness. No need for it.

  • "You attack according to your enemy attack", Wow!

  • tatang idol kita

  • Tatang is simply the BEST!!!

  • Tatang ROCKS!!!!!

  • TATANG IDOL YOUR THE BEST ...

  • before Tatang Ilustrisimo there was nothing.

after Tatang Ilustrisimo there was nothing...

  • the white dood looks very awkward and out of place..

    pinoy pryde ang talaga!

  • Simply beautiful martial art

  • "yet he's doing so much to handle all of Maranga's and Alan's attacks..."

That is GM Sioc Glaraga one of Tatang's students, his system is called Kalaki Arkanis :)

  • lol id be afraid of that grampa... kuz i know my gramps hits me if i do something stupid..imagine him O.o... tang ina... besides that... thats sweet!

lol imagine being tuli from that guy, cuz the curved end of the blade, i can sooo imagine it! haha XD

    filipino insider joke.

  • Wow, now I really see what they mean by their "floating foot" technique. If you pay attention to Tatang's movements, he's barely moving his left foot, yet he's doing so much to handle all of Maranga's and Alan's attacks...

  • this man was and still is the most badass grandmaster

  • legendary guy

He killed some accidentally when he was 17...

  • no.... it was on purpose. It was in a bar and he took the guys sword and cut his head off.

  • what's up with the gay white wannabe asian dude?

  • he owns Lion Hearts Production, i think.

  • guromarsh, did you say you own this whole series? Was it ever produced for sale? Can you make copies on dvd? I'll give you a few dollars? Let me know your take on that. I pratice here in RI. I'd like to show my instructor.

  • absolutley amazing. the only negative was the guy in the background. he was rather annoying.

  • Tatang Illustrisimo....simply the best

  • Dang whats tatangs real name?
