Hi Cat! thank you so much for this pattern - i've given it as gifts in Christmas past and i even gave it to a friend who needed a sling and he loved having something warm, stylish and functional.
now i have a technical question: are you familiar with linen stitch (instead of k1p1 ribbing, the wrong side st is slipped). imagining a magical moebius in this pattern, i'm wondering if you think i can/should try the 1st ring of knitting in pattern. thanks and happy everything to you and yours ♥
I have made a couple of these cowls but have given them to friends.. Now I need to make me one! One of my next adventures is to knit my first pair of socks.. and I think that the Coriolis sock sounds easy enough for a first attempt. I just saw it on a rerun of Knitty Gritty. I am excited to give it a try. I've all the ingredients for the attempt except for the actual pattern and the courage, but I've ordered a book that is supposed to have it so I'll get over my sock phobia!
So if I don't want this to be "bipolar" would I just knit one row then purl the next? Maybe I just need to finish the one I just cast on then do another to play around with stitches!
You are brilliant! I use your 2 circular needle technique for socks and I'm about to start my second mobius scarf. Thanks so much for your books - which are awesome and for posting these videos!!!
you have an amazing mind. I love this cast on and refer to it for my moebius pattern. I love the moebius and it really is an amazing thing, especially when you knit it with a reversible fabric that has a different look on both sides.
Thanks for this video - you make the technique "doable" - except after trying many times, my end product resembles a snake or rope more than anything else; I have only one twist - what did I do wrong???
This Moebius video is superb. Thankl you for the clear instructions! I have a question though... I am using your pattern in the Second Treasury book, and the yarn I am using is Malabrigo Sock weight. When casting on I notice thaat he 47 cable kind of bulges up top, making it hard to knit into any stitches... Is it because of the skinnier yarn? should I combine the sock weight with something else to make the yarn bulkier?
Thank you so much for that tutorial! You're a great teacher-- eloquent, calm, and you make it look so easy and fun! I'm going to buy some cable needles and try this out! And thank you for using that thick yarn; it was very easy to see and understand what you were doing!
Great video Cat and I love your book "A Treasury of Magical Knitting". I was hoping to find a youtube video after my first very confusing attempt at following the instructions in the book. And my first attempt was with Denise kneedles and uggghh... very frustrating, the cast on was way too tight! So I switched to the longest Addi Turbo kneedles I had on hand and success! It's fun and I can't wait to see what my first project ends up looking like! A nice "twist" for my knitting hobby!

does anyone knitting a mobius with Cat's cast on have trouble with that first row having stretched stitches that go around thru the middle on the first half of the first round, where you are knitting the cast on? I would love some help from someone of even Cat, to resolve this. I am on my 6th or 7th mobius and have tried all I can think of to not have that row with the stretched stitches. help!!!
Thank you so much for this video Cat.....I love mobius but must come back here often to cast on....Thank you for being so great at explaining this....
In the video which helps greatly, you put the market on the right needle but say that you are putting it on th left.
I bought your book because someone knit the reversible lotus blossom hat for my daughter and she loved it but lost it. So I'm going to make another one her. The knit shop in Evanston, IL, where I bought your book (CloseKnit) directed me to the video which as I said helps greatly.
I just love how you explained MOEBIUS (with the strip of paper and the sentence) without dropping a stitch and never missing a beat! You make a great teacher and I thank you for this. Someone has a Moebius hat on here with awesome trim on it but they specify that they don't do patterns, just sell hats. It is Strawberry Couture's Stitch or something. I love that pattern and would like to make one of these.
Hi Cat, I have been wanting to use your method for a while, just took finals and now I have a chance. But the pattern I am using is a k8p8. Can I still use that pattern with your method?

I have just knitted my first moebius (following a different cast on method) and I have managed to get two twists?!? It is pretty impressive but not what I was hoping for, what did I do wrong? Its still perfectly wearable as a neck warmer but it wasn't what I was hoping for!
A 47" length circ is long enough for all but the bulkiest and most enormous Moebius (like a large cat bed that will be felted). To knit a Moebius that will fall to mid-torso (about 50" circumference probably), a 47" needle will coil around itself twice, bunching up the 50" of knitting on the approximately 23" coils. This is ideal. You do not want the circumference of knitting to match the circumference of the needle as then you spend al your time moving things along one stitch at a time.
I have a patten that called for me to knit one row and k1under for the next row. Is it ok to use knit on the moebius (which looks like purling when we knitted) on the 'purling' side? would it make a difference?
thank you so much. i have your book but seeing is so much easier. now i am trying to find how to do the hat part of it. do you have a session explaining how to make a beanie please
I just made one of your moebius and when I was showing it of I received one question (witch I haven't answered yet. What is the difference between this type of cast on for moebius and just making a twist right before making að join? Can you give me a good answer to that one? Thank you
@tinaeinars1 When you just twist your cast on, you must twist it 360 degrees in order to be able to knit. A Moebius can have only 180 degrees twist. The 360 degree twist still has two edges and two surfaces whereas the Moebius has one of each, which gives it mirror symmetry and all kinds of magical properties.
Thank you. I am really quite amazed that you still take the time to reply to us. I've already completed one moebius scarf, I just want to make one smaller. Thank you so very much for sharing with us.
This video is what inspired me to return to knitting. So I could say "it's all your fault" that I spend so much time knitting rather than chasing dust bunnies around the house. thank you again.
This is a *very* good introduction into moebius knitting, thank you! Even with a head cold I managed to cast on without a hitch and knit myself a nice neck warmer. Quite the cure for the common cold, if I do say so myself! ;)
Lovely instructions. It's a shame there is no information regarding the number of stitches, but understandable, since there's a book by the author.
The cast-on is easy, once you pick up the rhythm.
One way to check oneself on the cast on is to pay attention to the first row - one stitch "wants" to be knitted in front, and the other one - in back, Thanks.
Hi Cat! I am very intrested in this technique! I have been reading things on your page and watching the video and am anxious to try! What size needle did you use for this project? Wish me luck!
Just finished my very first Moebius scarf....created with your help...thank you...I used thick natural wool and it came out absolutely fantastic. Your instructions are easy (and clear) to follow and I enjoy your voice....and of course, your knowledge. Thank you again....starting on number two...
Excellent video and very helpful! You saved us in our crunch to complete a Christmas gift!.. Is there any way to put two twists into the scarf (i.e., one for front and one for back?) Many thanks!
A Moebius always has an odd number of half-turns so you cannot ever have one with 2 twists. To get a 2-twist loop, merely cast on and twist the cast-on. It will give you an even number of half-turns or twists. It will also ALWAYS have 2 edges and 2 surfaces, while a Moebius will ALWAYS have 1 edge and 1 surface.
Thank you Cathy! So just to clarify - to get 2 twists I would cast on regularly (say cable cast on) and twist my stitches 180 degrees? Wow! I've never left stitches twisted to find out! Another reminder about all the interesting things that are just around the corner with knitting!
Thanks again Cat - you've been so very helpful! And yes, I think you're right... two twists would be more awkward AND not nearly as fun/magical as knitting a moebius -- Diana
