The Master, even though he sacrificed himself and found "redemption" (for lack of a better word) he was still sent back with Rassilon and the rest of the Time Lords to burn. So justice is served and the villain has transmuted into an accessory to the greater good.

...As to the drumming he hears: It's supposed to be the rhythm of the universe, but I've thought of something else: that same rhythm is identical to the double-heartbeat of the Gallifreyans themselves. Considering they were predestined to become the masters of time, I think it's interesting to think about ^_^.
Actually, Death, a Gallifreyan God, instilled the Master (Koschei) with the drums as he looked into the Schism on his Initiation in a bid to make him her Champion. Over time, the drums' call to war slowly consumed his soul.
Originally the Doctor (Theta) was meant to be her Champion after accidentally murdering a student at the Academy, but he struck a deal with Death to spare him in favour of the Master (Koschei).
The Music of the Spheres is the rhythm of the universe, not the drumming.

The drumming rhythm was derived from a variation of the first few seconds of the Doctor Who theme tune. You know those 'dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun's? Personally, I find it hilarious that the Master is walking around with the theme tune of his best enemy's show stuck in his head :P
They aren't their real names, of course, no one knows them (and hopefully never will), but the Academy gave them aliases. 'The Doctor' is just a renegade title; other Time Lords don't use them.
I know the rhythm's the first part of the show...I just had a fan moment and wanted to propose an interesting what-if I guess :P...Why wouldn't Time Lords don't use titles like that? Time Lords gave their people aliases like n the CIA? Makes sense, considering how many people you can end up pissing off when you're trying to protect the Universe from itself :-\. Oh, and I keep forgetting the Doctor's considered "renegade" :-x.

As the Doctor says, there is vast amounts of power in a name. It's also been suggested that it's because you can't pronounce it, being a long line of mathematical/greek symbols and Theta Sigma is the first part, like Romana's name is 'Romanadvoratrelundar'. The truth is no one really knows why they use aliases instead - maybe for communication, or maybe protection.
Renegades seem to take on another alias like 'The [...]'. You get non-renegades like Borusa who just stay with their Academy alias.
OK, I have another question now: is is clear as to the relationship between the Doctor and the Master? I know they're enemies and whatnot, just wondering if there's any possibility of them being relatives (I mean, technically every Time lord is related to another due to Rassilon (don' t even get me started on that one >:\), but I mean, is it close or distant?)
Nope - they aren't in the least bit related. The Doctor comes from the Oldblood House of Lungbarrow, one of the founding houses of Rassilon. The Master comes from the Newblood House of Oakdown, one of the most respected Houses of the Prydon chapter. They're loomed in entirely different Houses, at different times and, Rassilon or not, means that they can't be related, as each house has their own unique genetic core to loom their Cousins.
So you're telling me that while the Doctor (being an Oldblood) had to regenerate at least once in order to get his two hearts, the Master was already loomed with both of his? (I ask this because of what I read about the difference between the Old- and Newbloods, I want to be sure my info's correct for future reference ^_^)
This is yet another mystery - while the Doctor claims that he was loomed with one heart, it can't be verified, and being that he was loomed specifically to become a potential Head of Presidency I'd say they would have given him two. That's just my opinion though and is not fact.
The Master however, would have definitely been loomed with two. Oakdown is too well-respected/modern to stick with one.
(As for the banana love - it's just a quirk of the regeneration, like jelly babies were to Four.)

What people don't realize is his colleague at the time (who went by the alias Omega) actually was responsible for creating just the right type of series of events to occur to make it possible for time travel to begin with. Of course Rassilon, glory-seeker that he was, neglected to bring that bit to everyone's attention and decided to take all the credit -.-'.
kitzlaihel: I looked it up on the Doctor Who wiki a while back (yeah, I can't remember everything I ate for dinner last night, but I can remember in detail biographical info on fictional characters I read about two months ago...go figure *facepalm*)...Anyhoo, there's separate articles on both Omega and Rassilon, as well as the Doctor, the Master, and others if you want to find out more about them :D

...As to the drumming he hears: It's supposed to be the rhythm of the universe, but I've thought of something else: that same rhythm is identical to the double-heartbeat of the Gallifreyans themselves. Considering they were predestined to become the masters of time, I think it's interesting to think about ^_^.

Actually, Death, a Gallifreyan God, instilled the Master (Koschei) with the drums as he looked into the Schism on his Initiation in a bid to make him her Champion. Over time, the drums' call to war slowly consumed his soul.
Originally the Doctor (Theta) was meant to be her Champion after accidentally murdering a student at the Academy, but he struck a deal with Death to spare him in favour of the Master (Koschei).
The Music of the Spheres is the rhythm of the universe, not the drumming.

The drumming rhythm was derived from a variation of the first few seconds of the Doctor Who theme tune. You know those 'dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun's? Personally, I find it hilarious that the Master is walking around with the theme tune of his best enemy's show stuck in his head :P
They aren't their real names, of course, no one knows them (and hopefully never will), but the Academy gave them aliases. 'The Doctor' is just a renegade title; other Time Lords don't use them.

I know the rhythm's the first part of the show...I just had a fan moment and wanted to propose an interesting what-if I guess :P...Why wouldn't Time Lords don't use titles like that? Time Lords gave their people aliases like n the CIA? Makes sense, considering how many people you can end up pissing off when you're trying to protect the Universe from itself :-\. Oh, and I keep forgetting the Doctor's considered "renegade" :-x.

As the Doctor says, there is vast amounts of power in a name. It's also been suggested that it's because you can't pronounce it, being a long line of mathematical/greek symbols and Theta Sigma is the first part, like Romana's name is 'Romanadvoratrelundar'. The truth is no one really knows why they use aliases instead - maybe for communication, or maybe protection.
Renegades seem to take on another alias like 'The [...]'. You get non-renegades like Borusa who just stay with their Academy alias.

OK, I have another question now: is is clear as to the relationship between the Doctor and the Master? I know they're enemies and whatnot, just wondering if there's any possibility of them being relatives (I mean, technically every Time lord is related to another due to Rassilon (don' t even get me started on that one >:\), but I mean, is it close or distant?)

Nope - they aren't in the least bit related. The Doctor comes from the Oldblood House of Lungbarrow, one of the founding houses of Rassilon. The Master comes from the Newblood House of Oakdown, one of the most respected Houses of the Prydon chapter. They're loomed in entirely different Houses, at different times and, Rassilon or not, means that they can't be related, as each house has their own unique genetic core to loom their Cousins.

So you're telling me that while the Doctor (being an Oldblood) had to regenerate at least once in order to get his two hearts, the Master was already loomed with both of his? (I ask this because of what I read about the difference between the Old- and Newbloods, I want to be sure my info's correct for future reference ^_^)

This is yet another mystery - while the Doctor claims that he was loomed with one heart, it can't be verified, and being that he was loomed specifically to become a potential Head of Presidency I'd say they would have given him two. That's just my opinion though and is not fact.
The Master however, would have definitely been loomed with two. Oakdown is too well-respected/modern to stick with one.
(As for the banana love - it's just a quirk of the regeneration, like jelly babies were to Four.)

What people don't realize is his colleague at the time (who went by the alias Omega) actually was responsible for creating just the right type of series of events to occur to make it possible for time travel to begin with. Of course Rassilon, glory-seeker that he was, neglected to bring that bit to everyone's attention and decided to take all the credit -.-'.

im getting the series 3 boxset for christmas in 2 days, and hopefully, teh series 4 boxset in january for my birthday! I loved this episode, and john simm is my 2nd favourite master, the first being Anthony Ainley. i think the cabbinet in session could have been no 2, instead of number 3.
