BRAVISSIMA !! What a beautiful, exquisit and envolving voice, I have been listening now 3 times to it ~ Ms. Muzio´s interpretation moves me to tears .Thank you @A7sogno for this gem , went straight to my favorites.
I´ve known an old teacher who sung at Rio with her. He worked whith Callas, and Del Monaco after...but above his Piano a picture of Muzio was always the most important thing in his room.....
Geraldo Chagas, said she was really unforgetable onstage.
My God, I've listened to this countless times and every time I come back I am amazed by the pure beauty of the voice, the sensibility of the musical line, everything.... A treasure. Period!
Exquisite - but then Muzio is one of my favourites. One cannot but be moved by such incredibly beautiful and sensitive phrasing. If you haven't heard her singing "O del mio amato ben" go find it now! It's a treaured 78 of mine!
Loved this and listened again. Then noticed you had given us the words. Listened once more to hear her caressing them. I'd better make this a favorite. It is sublime music sublimely sung. Thank you for it.
Gracias!!!
This is one of those records that really get into one's soul and stay there. It's the amazing vocal personality of this unique artist, and that indescribably beautiful voice.
She's one of my new top favorites--and now I'll have to see if I can find some Refice to learn, too. I definitely hear that warm, fuzzy center in some of the twentieth-century voices that follow in the Italian tradition... but she has such a luminous sound, and one can only imagine (given the poor primitive recordings that are all we possess) what that instrument would have felt like in PERSON.
Musicians loved Muzio because she sang with phrasing-chiaroscuro, which Callas adapted to herself, although she could not command the beauty of tone that Muzio possessed. Opera Singers today are lacking in both areas.
This wonderful record - on which the composer conducts - was made only 10 months before the singer died of heart disease. Another great Diva, Dame Eva Turner, selected it as her first choice on 'Desert Island Discs'.
What a absolutly remarkable singer!!!I have watched all her videos on youtube (there are much too few!!)and I think that she truly does have it all!! Her voice is beautiful and what passoion!!! More people should here this!!! Thank you so so much A7 sogno! These recordings are truly perfect!
I would have LOVED this as a teenager. Still do of course, but how great YouTube is for making dreams seem to live. Muzio of course...one of my all-time favourites.
I was introduced to Muzio in my "after college" voice lessons where I learned more than ever. This recording brings back wonderful memories of "listening" lessons. I much prefer her voice to any modern fake sounds. So passionate...
Not a casual hearing form her ever. This woman involves you form the very first note. Heartbreaking, full of emotion that she never really apologizes for. Should she? NO! Would that we had more like this today. Brava Signora Millo. I am a long time of your art. Thank you for this antedote for an old man who loves a music that is fading along with me! Brava.
If this is who I think it is thank you for all you praise and support. She is a symbol of opera the way I insist on it being. This then inspires us both, Maestro? Con grande stima e rispetto -
I so agree. A timeless heart and emotion still beating thru it all. It is on most of the Edison Discs and the Columbia Re-releases of her great work. I made this video using an excerpt from one of these CD's of Muzio. Then added some photos and paintings based on Refice's very moving text. Really something.
Someone once asked me to name one performance I would like to have seen. Without hesitation I answered, 'Boito's Mefistofele at La Scala with Chaliapin, Caruso & Muzio! Oh, by the way (!) Toscanini conducted.
That would surely be a performance to die for! This lady is truly awesome,as were the other mentioned people.Only IMHO -Rosa Ponselle is in her class.
This aria is an ideal ID of Muzio's voice : her hability to give a special colour to every word in relation to the meaning of the text and, strictly vocally speaking, her "sfogate" starts which remind me these of Ponselle, the fluidity of the emission... This performance should be heard from any student in singing as a definitive reference.
I just love Muzio's wonderfully dark, exquisitely colored voice. She is one of the most expressive and emotionally affecting artists on record. Imo, all of her recordings from 1934/ 1935 are essential listening.
What a great singer Muzio was! Besides a beautiful voice and refined technique, she had, as you mention, an uncanny ability to characterize with her voice. Callas was not the only one to possess this genius.
I'm so very happy that someone finally did this- thank you A7sogno. It's interesting to hear how she probably influenced Tebaldi, and I would say Callas also. There's just no other singer who ever captured the color of emotion with even a simple phrase. Amazing woman- thank you again.
How interesting that you have shared this lovely tribute. It is coincidental that I was just looking into my wife's family tree which leads to Patrica, where Lincinio Refice was from and she has a Refice grandparent. Thanks for the video.
Claudia sung 3 performances of "Cecilia" at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro in the Season of 1935 with an incredible success. Renata Tebaldi, who was considered her sucessor, sung 2 performances, in the Season of 1954, also with great success.
It is about time for a major opera house stage this sacred opera "Cecilia" with the only true heiress of those two wonderful singers: Aprile Millo, the best verdian soprano on the world´s stages today. It would be fantastic !!!
Yes I do wish they would stage this opera -but only if aprile millo sings the title role -she IS a true heiress to the art of these great singers -the only singer today who is equal to these geniuses!!!! Does anyone know if there is a recording of millo singing this? I would love to hear that!!!!!!!!
Clive is not the only one : this melody has been haunting me since I first listened to it and I'm a 42 year old male ! Who could modulate volume and color as Muzio does nowadays ? Only the pianissimo start in the 2nd part of the aria drives me crazy.
Fabulous

Isn't she so wonderful and the film depicts it all. I so remember her voice when I was a child.
I have a few recordings of her, and other greats, they just

Era il ciel un arco azzurro di fulgor
chiara luce si versava nel mio cuor.
Ombra di nube, non mi offuscare,
della vita non velarmi la beltà.
Vola o nube, vola via da me lontan;
sia disperso questo mio tormento arcan.
Ancora luce, ancora azzurro!
Il sereno vegga per leternità!
