There are many resources to determine a route that is appropriate for trucks, not the least of which is Google Street View, which, if the driver had checked it, he would have seen that the bridge clearance is 12', 9". Most companies will send new drivers out with a driver trainer for a few weeks , to gain a little experience and confidence before throwing them off into the deep end. Can learn how to shift gears and drive straight ,,,,but the rest comes with practice..... a lot of their drivers dont have enough

I start orientation tomorrow at which point I will be on a truck with an experienced mentor for 5 weeks straight. If there is a lumper fee, we send a company advance request and they put the money on the comdata card to pay for the lumper straight up so you do not have to fork out cash in advance. Swift has a very large amount of drivers. Considering a lot of them are new drivers, it's not surprising that a lot of people leave. You have to start somewhere.

I've topped out a trailer once. But the overpass was marked 13'7" - my trailer was 13'6". Thing is, they had just repaved that road but didn't change the sign until a few days after my little oopsie. It was ruled nonpreventable. Now that overpass is marked 13'2".

@drama673 I almost thought I was a goner accidentally getting in the express lanes going through downtown Chicago at one time and then staying on the interstate only to notice a possible low clearance. Actually you are fine with 13' 6". The only thing is if you take an alternate route, just be sure to be scanning for low clearances especially onces posted 13' 6". If there is a local truck route to steer around the low clearance, use it. Hate to think about driving in NYC along the BQE.

I saw this happen at a loading dock one time, one of the really big forklifts went hauling ass into a trailer, hit the bottom of the ramp and bounced twice then went thru the floor...
