Actually, Im 37 years old. I started smoking Marlboros when I was 16. About 5 years ago I started smoking Djarum Blacks (cloves), and I dont enjoy any "normal" cigarette anymore. This takes away my freedom to smoke my cloves. I wont switch to Marlboros or any other, and will be forced to quit. Is it better for me, sure, but it should also be my choice, not theirs.

CalifSunshine2008- Just this past April, the US Govt enacted a 1000 percent tax on loose tobacco. A 2 dollar pouch of tobacco now costs over 4 dollars. A 6 Oz tin that cost about 12 dollars is now almost 40 dollars.The price increase is ALL TAX on top of the federal and state taxes that were already in place. I am not defending smoking, I am pointing out how the Govt is taxing people into poverty. There is no fair reason that tobacco is taxed at 1000 percent. This is opportunistic tax gouging.

Actually, Im 37 years old. I started smoking Marlboros when I was 16. About 5 years ago I started smoking Djarum Blacks (cloves), and I dont enjoy any "normal" cigarette anymore. This takes away my freedom to smoke my cloves. I wont switch to Marlboros or any other, and will be forced to quit. Is it better for me, sure, but it should also be my choice, not theirs.

The SCHIP is funded by cigarette taxes and that won't be going away when everybody stops smoking. Over 70% of the cost of a pack is taxes. That's alot of money boys and girls. Since tobacco is sold to the masses, not the classes...affordability is important to maintain optimal sales. So they're going to allocate that expense by adding it to the many food companies that Altria owns to keep the price down.

Phillip Morris takes just over half of their profits from tobacco sales, although they dominate the market.
They just spun off Kraft Foods, but they also own Miller and Nabisco.
The business will always pass the tax onto consumers.
They can allocate the tax expense into their food products instead of tobacco to keep tobacco prices affordable, which optimizes their sales.
Their main competators, UCT and Reynolds only sell tobacco and are going to get killed.
Did that make any sense?

Altria is the parent company of Phillip Morris through mergers.
Other effects:
Indonesia exports $400 million in clove cigs to the U.S. They're a really small economy and they're worried about this legislation as well.
We're going to lose tobacco exports to China. Japan also uses the Phillip Morris brand and will probably take THAT market.
This is just another case of how government sold out our free markets.

CalifSunshine2008- Just this past April, the US Govt enacted a 1000 percent tax on loose tobacco. A 2 dollar pouch of tobacco now costs over 4 dollars. A 6 Oz tin that cost about 12 dollars is now almost 40 dollars.The price increase is ALL TAX on top of the federal and state taxes that were already in place. I am not defending smoking, I am pointing out how the Govt is taxing people into poverty. There is no fair reason that tobacco is taxed at 1000 percent. This is opportunistic tax gouging.
