notice almost all computers in the 80s the number after the name of the computer is how much ram it has. example. Macintosh 512k (512k of RAM) Commodore 64 (64 Kb of RAM) Amiga 500 (about 500k of RAM)

They were produced in 2007, but won't be released to the public until 2019.
I wonder if Microsoft got their ideas for Windows interface from the Amiga WorkBench, there's so many operating systems that seem to be based on the WorkBench GUI. makes you think doesnt it.
Well, see, Amigas failure meant that computer technological advancements came slower simply because nobody else was able to match them ... at the time. Basically what I'm saying is that the computing power you are referring to would have come along over a decade ago and the computers we have today SHOULD have reached the degree of advancement that they actually won't be for another decade. We would be far more advanced today and have more power had they succeeded.
The graphics capabilities of the Amiga were easily 10 years ahead of its time. Had they been properly marketed you can bet Microsoft would not be who they are today, Windows would not be the dominant OS, and what's more had Amiga succeeded it would have meant that TODAY's computers would have already reached the level of complexity which they now won't reach for another 10 - 15 years. In other words, Amiga's failure delayed further advancements in home computing.
@punpunpunpunctuation There was some guy in those days (or little bit earlier) in Poland that made much more efficient computers, but thanks to socialism he was unable to succeed... Damn.. we could already be playing Crysis 3! xD
@punpunpunpunctuation So true. Unfortunately the video recorder this was captured on does not due justice for the graphics capability this machine rendered at the time. It was a breakthrough in graphics technology. Too sad we don't see Amiga around anymore.
They really were miles ahead of IBM PC's in the early 80s. IBM were the premier pc in the business world at the time; with no mouse, no sound, no graphics and monochrome. And the Amiga had great colour, graphics, sound and superb games that shat all over everything else. Must have had shit-fully bad corporate management though.
But all we have now is MACs and PCs.... We must work with what we have. I personally think MACs are great and PC is great for gaming. I use both I am a hybrid user. So, how come you think Amiga would have been better? it could have but how did commodore screw up?
The Amgia was doing things in 1987 that Mac's and PC's couldn't do. It had custom made graphics and sound chips. Their hardware was all made in house so it was affordable.
Commodore loused it up by not marketing things properly and letting people run the company who knew a total of jack and shit about computing.
@LSDodgers amiga architecture is better. consider that in 1994 windows 3.1 on a 486 dx 33 mhz with 16 mb ram. was performing lower than workbench on an amiga 1200 12 mhz 2mb ram....
pc architecture for make same stuff of amiga used 4x more processor power and memory... the only things that make amiga inferior was the expandibility... amiga was made as it is.. expasion was limited. where even a 486 was easy to expand : ram:/processor/soun/video card
Carm3D, don't argue with that cunt. Go back to using your talent to making money bro and let this useless eater find his way to the FEMA camp where he belongs.
I don't think that inserting game play footage as much of the video was a good marketing strategy to sell to businesses. Too bad... It was way ahead of any other computer at the time.
So "intuition" was the name given to the look and feel interface of Workbench. I've never heard it called by that name. I always thought of it as unix-like.
Yes you owned 3 amigas and acted as if you were well versed. Its in the papers that come with one. Not knowing this entitles everyone to call you doofy, Doofy.

fast and didnt have vista, loool. one of those anti vistatards. I see. My laptop with Win7 was half the price and can do way more than your macbook. I speak from owning a macbook. theyre a waste of skrill, dooder.
you bought amigas back in their heyday, and you never read the literature that came with it to find out what intuition is?
"Some user you are." I think I'm a fairly prolific user.. Take a look at my videos.. More productive than hitting a keyboard with a blunt instrument anyway.
I base my skills on my output.. From my YouTube vids, my website, the heaps of praise from my clients, etc.. Anyway I don't want to get into a protracted discussion with someone who says "My computer can beat up your computer." Bye douchebag.
The PCs used off-the-shelf parts which IBM couldn't have license control over. All the Amiga's innards were patented and protected from legitimate cloning. This kept it a 'closed' system whilst PCs got cheaper, customisable and went viral.
I am still amazed at how capable the Amiga 500 was... Some of its features were way ahead of their time. One example that impressed me was text to speech conversion.
I stopped using mine decades ago, but I still have it lying around somewhere. If it were a PC, it would have been binned a long, long time ago. I cant believe they went bust - even though they had the best software and hardware at the time, for some inexplicable reason, they were overlooked.
at this time windows was still at v1.0 .. check out screenshots of that .. amiga was wayyy ahead. microsoft stole almost all their ideas for windows from apple and commodore
I wonder why they chose to _hold_ the right button down for Intutition. It's a good system because I used it, but the holding the button down was kind of redundant, and with the mouse failing it was holding right Amiga button down on the keyboard.
At the time it was expandable to 1MB, as the memory expansion (slow mem) with a real time clock was released at the same time, but the 68000 can address 16MB, so that is the theoretical maximum for Amiga. Ofcourse the Kickstart (which includes the Intuition) takes up 256kb of that memory space, and the original graphics and sound chipset cannot address more than 512kb directly. Still, a pretty intuitive system for 1987.
If Amiga continued and had an operating system today, I bet it would be better than Windows! Amiga crushed the competition when it came out! Superior computer to anything that was out at the time!
Yeah, too bad that Commodore sucked in some ways and it never got as popular as the Mac. If there are 800 million computer users, I'd be happy to have a 0.1 % market share (thats already 800 000 users that I can rip off with DRM and incompatible stuff, forcing users to upgrade like Microsoft is doing now).

It has Tiny hard drive tiny memory it can't even run windows 95 YES i said that it can't even run BLOODY WINDOWS 95 The only computer you'll ever need YEAH RIGHT Just try to run vista on it!
Most VGA and Super VGA video cards for the PC didn't have more than 256kb of video memory until the 90s. My first PC had S3 video card with only 1MB of video memory, in 1994. Amiga 500 had 512kb of video memory back in 1987. Sure it was shared, but I don't know anybody who didn't buy the memory expansion.
MSDOS was something like 1 billion light years behind AmigaOS, still is and always will be. AmigaOS offered REAL multitasking which only Windows 95 managed to do it, yet, and very badly.
What killed Amiga was piracy, loads of Amiga software companies where closed. Software become more and more rare when PCs where becoming more and more popular. Also Amiga was always labeled as video game computer because of the peoples lack of knowledge on the subject.
'Not you' does not mean nobody. Many many people still do care about Amiga and are still using them because they are fun.
MSDOS is an operating system, Amiga is not...Amiga are computerS (500,1200, etc)
AmigaOS is the operating system of the Amiga.
Still Commodore went burst because of bad marketing and poor results in the US market, but at the time Commodore International went bankruptcy, European divisions were profitable.

I realise the Amiga has a cult following and you are obviously part of that cult, living in the past, still using the Amiga.Sadly it died a death a long time ago sorry about that.
I'm watching satellite tv on my pc using program from 2watchsatellitetvonpcnow.*info (remove *) . They have all popular sports/news/movie/music channels. Amazing!
nice video, if it quality was better, you could see me talking:) dethgeezr
lol that music is from 'The computer chronicles' tv show. I still have a working commodore64 and 1541 disk drive. Now you can emulate all this stuff using emulators :O :l
My preschool had a amiga in 1989 the muppet baby game was the lastest game out ther now dora games are the lastest games amgia was better than mac and windows now its outdated
Very good analysis generally of the benefits of computing, taylored for the capabilities of the Amiga but also reminds one that once in the pre-microsoft-own-evertything computer consumers/business users were first buying the benefits of computers and the benefits this commercial reports are what's been said to death from the computer industry and even now are claiming to be very new like smooth multi-tasking' for example(!). Thanks for posting that commercial! nice job :)
naa Amiga is bad pc i have always used IBM and WIndows 1.0 and upgraded to 3.1 in 1993 becuse the softwares requested it but amiga is good to knowed a friend that haved it he could run Doom 1 on 16 bit i could only run it on 8bit with my windows 1.0
in those times the amiga was still more powerfull than a standard IBM PC internet and computer communications are developed on a amiga and the 1st multitasking computer i still have that puppy the amiga 500+ every "rich"goverment used it they even went to space with a commandore on board it also was the 1st computer who had a CAD program i still love that puppy
yes but i prefer IBM PCs Amiga 500 is good to but IBM and Windows 1.0 and 3.1 i have used from 1985 to 1995 then i upgraded to Windows 95 and got a newer IBM PCs but now i have quit in work and i have used Asus and HP and Dell and Compaq all this PCs are good but its sad that old PC firmas whas closed in early 90s in 80s we had alot of compiuter Manufacturing firmas but now they all closed and thats sad
Actually I don't think this was a Television Commercial I think it was a videotape given to those who expressed interest in the Amiga. Plus I believe there's a clearer version of this here on YT.
Down below, the air force had a transportation systen (via couriers) since the 1950's, however foreign countries developed a system of technology theft(basically they killed the couriers and stole the technology). (via (bugs) in a(lu)minum frame works for data storage). Impending situations eventually led to the satcom and eventually simulator points, the Arps distributor network and portals eventually became the standard leading to TCP/IP and internet and tsp/id and programs like protocol
That's the "Computer chronicles" theme in the background, anyone know what it's called? I guess it's production library music, but iconic for anything to do with 8/16 bit micros...
just to let you know amiga still makes operating systems its got one coming out soon its kinda like linux but a totaly seperate os its a bit like mac os then just google it and look for it i didnt even know amiga still existed if you think progras lack on linux think amiga would be a pain

MACINTOSH RULES ALL compared to crap like dos and other text based os lol windows was just like a program for dos to begin with then a secondary front for dos it only got good at windows 95 before that pcs were only for typing and work

anything is more superior. windows main purpose is for business and games and mac n Linux does both of those tasks better. there is not 1 advantage of windows.
I think it was ahead of its time, the machine could practically sell itself especially in the creative arts (inc titling, genlocking/blue-screening and image editing). It was multimedia before the phrase was even coined. The downside was the cost of producing the hardware as well as the cost of peripherals, together with Commodore's marketing strategy. The multi-tasking on the Amiga really was streets ahead cos it was designed to do it from the ground up, in hardware not just software.
Oh yeah..and it was pre-emptive multi-tasking not co-operative like Windows used. The ability to use separate, draggable screens to run multiple applications was also a real bonus. If you needed to run x86 software there were 3rd-party hardware solutions or alternatively you could run emulation software (including i486 support). This machine could also emulate an Apple Mac really well. Newtek also use the Amiga to create a video production suite, saving thousands.
OK, pretty good for 1987, when the main competition was the IBM-AT (an 80286 at 8mHz), but I love that line at the beginning: "The only computer you will ever need!"
The only computer you will ever need?
That's quite a bold statement... but okay.... so how do I get Call of Duty: Black Ops running on this with all the settings maxed?

Commodore Amiga
Too much technology at once..
The Industry did not want that.
They wanted consumers to pay for it first.
We probably could have had MP3 Players in 1992 but no.......
The system oozed out technology to consumers bit by bit,in order to squeeze the maximum amount of profit from them.
(A PC in 1996 could only "beep",something a Sinclair ZX Spectrum could do in 1982 and yet the Amiga could play 4 channel sampled sound in 1985)
Commodore were removed on purpose from the game.

you bought amigas back in their heyday, and you never read the literature that came with it to find out what intuition is?
Some user you are. lol.

"Some user you are." I think I'm a fairly prolific user.. Take a look at my videos.. More productive than hitting a keyboard with a blunt instrument anyway.
carm3d 2 years ago
whats wrong with smashing a junked up computer with a hammer? You could get all prolific on it, it still wont do much except be broken.
Thats before I hit it with a hammer btw.
basing your skills off of youtube videos is pretty stupid anyways, Doofy
Arkhandroid 2 years ago
I base my skills on my output.. From my YouTube vids, my website, the heaps of praise from my clients, etc.. Anyway I don't want to get into a protracted discussion with someone who says "My computer can beat up your computer." Bye douchebag.

hey, dont bring the heat if you cant take the noise. youre 38 calling people douchebag on Youtube,
bang up job, doofaroonie.
quite prolific. cant even read a manual. MY AMIGAS NEVER HAD NO INTUITIONS. IVE OWNED 3 AND THEY WERE STATE OF THE ART.

My mother always told me never to argue with a douchebag, because you'll just walk away smelling like vinegar.

Commodore should have become the Big Dog of the computing world, well into the 90s, but mismanagement killed it.
TruthandJustice101 2 years ago 6
The PCs used off-the-shelf parts which IBM couldn't have license control over. All the Amiga's innards were patented and protected from legitimate cloning. This kept it a 'closed' system whilst PCs got cheaper, customisable and went viral.

It makes me angry to see this video from 1987, being that in 1994 we were all dragging along with Windows 3.1, an inferior successor to Amiga.
It's kind of like the idiot nephew who takes the throne because the much more capable son and heir to the king has died in battle.
All the more reason why I have migrated to Linux and have no more interest in Windows.
TruthandJustice101 1 year ago
I am still amazed at how capable the Amiga 500 was... Some of its features were way ahead of their time. One example that impressed me was text to speech conversion.
I stopped using mine decades ago, but I still have it lying around somewhere. If it were a PC, it would have been binned a long, long time ago. I cant believe they went bust - even though they had the best software and hardware at the time, for some inexplicable reason, they were overlooked.

YES. LOL that is the most humorous statement in this video!

at this time windows was still at v1.0 .. check out screenshots of that .. amiga was wayyy ahead. microsoft stole almost all their ideas for windows from apple and commodore

Simpson654 2 years ago 2
If Amiga continued and had an operating system today, I bet it would be better than Windows! Amiga crushed the competition when it came out! Superior computer to anything that was out at the time!
facistleader 3 years ago 23
Yeah, too bad that Commodore sucked in some ways and it never got as popular as the Mac. If there are 800 million computer users, I'd be happy to have a 0.1 % market share (thats already 800 000 users that I can rip off with DRM and incompatible stuff, forcing users to upgrade like Microsoft is doing now).

Innovative that's why they went bust they couldn't compete with MSDOS
ninelivecat 3 years ago
MSDOS was something like 1 billion light years behind AmigaOS, still is and always will be. AmigaOS offered REAL multitasking which only Windows 95 managed to do it, yet, and very badly.
What killed Amiga was piracy, loads of Amiga software companies where closed. Software become more and more rare when PCs where becoming more and more popular. Also Amiga was always labeled as video game computer because of the peoples lack of knowledge on the subject.

Sorry your wrong MSDOS became the standard like VHS nobody cared about the Amiga or Betamax even if they where better products
ninelivecat 3 years ago

At the time, it really was very innovative. I thought it was a great product. They just didnt survive.
Aesoe 4 years ago
I think it was ahead of its time, the machine could practically sell itself especially in the creative arts (inc titling, genlocking/blue-screening and image editing). It was multimedia before the phrase was even coined. The downside was the cost of producing the hardware as well as the cost of peripherals, together with Commodore's marketing strategy. The multi-tasking on the Amiga really was streets ahead cos it was designed to do it from the ground up, in hardware not just software.
JiggaJagga 3 years ago
Oh yeah..and it was pre-emptive multi-tasking not co-operative like Windows used. The ability to use separate, draggable screens to run multiple applications was also a real bonus. If you needed to run x86 software there were 3rd-party hardware solutions or alternatively you could run emulation software (including i486 support). This machine could also emulate an Apple Mac really well. Newtek also use the Amiga to create a video production suite, saving thousands.
JiggaJagga 3 years ago
OK, pretty good for 1987, when the main competition was the IBM-AT (an 80286 at 8mHz), but I love that line at the beginning: "The only computer you will ever need!"
