Probably one of Will Smith's best performance and one of the best all-around movies ever because everyone has felt like this sometimes. You've got a dream. Go get it. Period. Gives me chills.
What gets me is that it is inspired by a true story. Knowing someone had this determination in the world, shows that it isn't all bad in the world today
I stopped watching this movie in the middle, partly because I was tired, but my dad is unemployed, and it scared me, also I was halfway to crying my eyes out :]
@ZamphereRiley you should watch the end. It is inspirational! It was a man making a decision to be something more, to do more! It was another example of how anyone can rise above the toughest challenges
What's the name of the music that plays in 0:50? I tried to found it in the band "The Pursuit of Happiness" If someone can help me , I would be thankfull.
@VerySweetMangos your version of cynicism seems to prohibit criticism. im being critical not cynical, if i was being cynical i wouldn't be posting discursive comments.
@gooieslee hang on. this isn't getting out of poverty it's getting rich. paying the rent, paying for food is quite different. happiness is being defined as/equated with prosperity. you disagree?
@gooieslee well he was in deep financial trouble after his scanner business failed and he cant even pay rent. So this is about getting out of poverty. The movie didnt depict how happy he was to be driving around in a ferrari, just happy to have a decent job and being able to provide for his kid.
@gooieslee i don't disagree with your comment. relationship between ability to pay rent and happiness. but if your saying that this is what the film is arguing then you'll have to explain than one to me. it seems that affluence not 'making ends meet' is being lauded when the film chooses to portray a banker's plight rather than that of the poor.
I think you are taking something very different from the movie than I did. I saw a man hitting rock bottom and choosing to rise above. This is a real story and the real Chris Gardener went through even more challenges in real life. His step farther was an abusive alcoholic that threttend his mother and him with a shot gun. When he was a teenager he was raped by thug and to top it all off his marrage falls apart and he ends up homeless!
@ioubigtime12 . " I saw a man hitting rock bottom and choosing to rise above" yeah i agree, i saw that too. you seem to think that therefore you disagree with me? i don't dispute that. my only point is that what you aptly call "rising above" is a certain conception of what it is to rise above- 'success' is not necessarily money. happiness, and the pursuit of, is being organised as a pursuit of money- that is not necessarily so. not being rock bottom good- being rich not necessarily the one good.
@XXthewaveXX You're just selectively pulling out what you want out of his comments to support your arguement. This is not a story about a banker and how gets money. It's not a story about paying the rent. These are just supporting details. The point of the movie is to show how a great man was put in unfortunate circumstances and suceeded because of unfailing determination. The point of the movie is to show us that we all have dreams and that we should all go get them. Period.
@InsomniacOfTV Again, as with every response ive had here, i dont disagree with what you're saying. Although, im not sure if you can say that the movie has any one point, i don't think things like films have just one effect. Yes it is about showing us that we have dreams and getting them, yep- it does do that, obviously. My point, and please pay attention, is that his dream is being equated with what it is to succeed. In this case realisation of dreams is the achievement of wealth.
@XXthewaveXX You are right about the fact that being rich dosen't nessacarily make a person happy. An old rich man may spend his money on fancy cars or mansions so that he can maintain interest in life. However in the context of the Pursuit of Happyness, attaining a high job position directly contributes to the main character's happiness. This is because he knows his and his son's future is secure. The banker position isn't about promotion of the rich; it's about fulfillment of long-term goals.
