How do y'all think go-go conga players stack up against caribbean ones like cubans playing their own style of music. It's hard to say because you know these dc dudes probably don't have any formal training but it seems to me like they are more skillful. Any opinions?
I think any one that plays the Congo's has skill, regardless of what style music they play...its not like the drums or any other instrument because you cant learn and study off of sheet music...congo's is a very unique instrument, with that being said, i think the gogo players are more skillful

I grew up a rare essence fan, but my nephew turned me on the smoke and the NE Groovers, I can't stop listening to their pockets and comparing it to Essence. If I was to rate just the pockets, NE Groovers are the best.

This dude is a beast and if he's the best then good; but you can't take a thing from Boogie, Mickey, Spanky, or any of the rest. Every great teacher wants the student to surpass his own accomplishments, just as the father wants his son to be better than himself. So it ain't about discrediting any of the old heads. Mickey said he learned from Boogie, Smoke said he learned from Mickey... and the next bad ass youngin' gon' say he learned from Smoke.

Smoke is absolutely the best go go conga player there is, hands down. Mickey who? Jungle Boogie who? Rock Steady who?, etc. None can compete with the style or versatility as smoke. I grew up a rare essence fan, but my nephew turned me on the smoke and the NE Groovers, I can't stop listening to their pockets and comparing it to Essence. If I was to rate just the pockets, NE Groovers are the best.

I have never actually seen this youngin live but I remember go-go from the very beginning. EU had a dude by the name of Smoky that was just as good if not better than Jungly Boogie. I have seen all the old heads on the congos and I give it up where its due, this youngin is the best I have ever seen. His hand speed alone is faster than Boogie's.
