  • I could be her...now I am geisha to this house. I could be her..Where we so different? She loved once... she hoped once...I might be looking into my own future.Until the real future came falling from the air...

  • Woooaaaah, what the hell happened to Japan!? D8

  • chairman is the guy from inception

  • Hatsumomo, that beautiful, crazy bitch.

  • Forget Hatsumomo.

    The chairman is so hot!

    :D!

  • What is the name of this beautiful song about Kyoto at 0:53 ?

  • I think if she didn't take advantage of her position then she wouldn't be hated, etc. But I can see what you mean

  • Supposedly, I was going to finish the book for this speech I needed for school. I was halfway through and I remember that Koichi really had a wife and I think he was a chef or something..? He wasn't mentioned after that scene. I really pity Hatsumomo. :( She's been living a sad life.

  • The chairman is my favorite :)

  • in the book, do we ever find out what happened to koichi & hatsumomo? i can't remember! i mean, i know hatsumomo became a prostitute afterwards but didn't she really love koichi, that guy she slept with? why didn't they ever try running away together or something?

  • @ThorXinXParis

I think i remember Koichi having a wife or something and he just decided to leave her.

  • hatsumomo~ Her react in my opinion is not only she pissed off, but also i feel like that was the only way she could escape form that life. The life was covered with upset, jealous and nothing to lose. She burned the house, at the same time, she burned her life too.

  • dont feel sorry for hatsumomo...yea i guess, she never wanted to be a geisha maybe, but look at where sayuri came from...they think of it as destiny. hatsumomo could have bounced out anytime she felt like it

  • And so The Grudge was born....oh wait, wrong movie :P

  • OH this is during WW2

  • can someone explain to me this part here? so who was invading who? i read the book but i forget this part

  • @ocean1111diaries this was during world war 2 when Hitler was in control of Germany and America helped the Jewish people the Japanese where on Hitlers side

  • Yay! The baron comitted suicide!

  • @melody32014

    that's good!

    The baron was a pervert

  • In the book she was kicked out for biting some guy at a party or something,& became a prostitute.

  • were did hatsumomo go?

  • In the book, they say that Hatsumomo went off and became a prostitute

  • i think it was the okiya where Korin lives was burnt not the Nitta's.

  • it wasnt in the book because Hatsumomo was asked to leave the okiya for her behavior. Perhaps in the movie they only embellished on this but she did not bite her tounge as much as you see, nor was she secretive about her actions.

  • i don't know eve if it wasn't in the book it was a nive touch ;)

  • iim sooo confused about what jkust happenend

  • mmmmm americans mmmmm :-P

  • its kinda funny u here theese names sayuri, hatsumomo and then pumpkin??

  • i know, i was reading the book an d it says that pumpkin's geisha name was Hatsuliyo, or somthing like that, but everyone kept calling her Pumpkin

  • oh ok. thanks!

  • she was always bad but while time goes by she turn into a cruel woman and getting crazier.....she was jealous always with Chiyo because Chiyo was better woman and even a better geisha that she was in her youth.....but with the okiya´s burning was the point when she lost her mind and when she couldn´t take it anymore......

  • thats different from the book though right?... i've only just finished reading it and i don't remember there being a fire when Hatsumono lost it...

  • You are correct. There was no fire in the book.

  • when i saw hatsumono leaving the okiya i realized that she was so lost....she didn´t have no one in her life and no one to love that ´s why she was the way she was....Sayuri could go on with her life because she has someone to love but Hatsumono didn´t have no one...she was feeling so alone that´s why maybe she caused the okiya´s burning

  • wasnt she already bad even before that?

  • they couldn't have cut the poor man's arm just for a movie, right? but they could have found another actor. oh well. just another thing that is different from the book. what a surprise!

  • fuck hatsumomo is hot

  • Nobu is a lot grouchier in the book

  • they left out some of the best parts from the book :(

  • like wat parts did they leave from the book that were great?? i didnt even kno they had a book 4 this i need 2 get it and read it

  • what were they

    ?

  • one thing was that they left out the part where she finds out about her parents' death, and also when there is trouble between mameha and hatsumomo

  • no they didn't.

  • @iLY0X8 That was in a earlier bit....right after she falls off the roof.

  • Japanese.

  • is this the pearl harbor war

    with japan and america

is americas there in the movie?

  • this is world war 2. america was neutral at first in world war 2, but when japan bombed pearl harbor(in hawaii) thats when america joined the war with the allies against japan, germany, and italy

  • Poor Nobu-san ._.

I think he felt in love with Sayuri, but he knows they're so chance.

  • I know everybody's going to disagree, but i feel sad for Hatsumomo. I mean, if you look at it from her point of view, nobody actually wanted her around, she made money, that was it. Ya she had a temper, but you'd be pissed off too if sombody came along looking twice as better and easily loved more by everyone. But... burning down the okiya??? maybe a little excessive.

  • I agree with you, If i were Hatsumomo I'd have a bad temper and pissed off every day too. Imagine having the only thing that's important to you stripped away from you, and then having everyone tell you that you are worthless and old.

  • trust me, hastumomo's a lot easier to sympathize with in the movie than in the book. i sympathized w/ her in the book, but out of all my friends i had to be the only one :D

  • Comment removed

  • @SniffingDaisies she was feeling impuslive we do sometimes when we feel strong emotions. I'm sure she felt horrible after realizing her mistake

  • @SniffingDaisies actually i agree lol:)

  • @SniffingDaisies she was like that from the very beginning though, even when she first met her, before she even became a geisha. she got what she deserved.

  • @SniffingDaisies I understand what you are saying, but if she had a better attitude people would like her more.

  • dude, I would have killed that woman. no joke.

  • In the book, she doesnt even start a fire. She just gets kicked out of the house. :/

  • In the book, Hatsumomo bit and viciously attacked her friend, a homosexual Kabuki for making her look like a fool by kissing Mameha. As a result, Mother kicked her out of the Okiya and she was banned from Gion permanently.

Rumors speculated that Hatsumomo was living in the Miyagawa-Cho district as a prostitute(the same district that Satsu was sold to). However, it was implied she was successful in drinking herself to death with too much sake intake.

  • did hatsumomo die in the fire?

  • forget my last comment, i didnt watch the full video before posting, sorry.

  • No, she got kicked out though for starting it.

  • no, but, i think mother said that hatsumomo did prostitution and died by alchohal poisoning...

  • no she walked out of the house and didnt return

  • Even though Hatsumomo was evil.... I still feel bad for her, she lost love...that is sad..

  • I don't really think she was evil. I think she was just hardened by the lives that geisha held back then. I mean, she's worked her entire life to become a geisha and then Sayuri kind of waltzes in and slowly undoes it, eventually taking the oikiya from Hatsumomo.

  • Saiyuri didnt just take the okiya from her though, when she was young, she figured out that she was with a man, she never saw him again, losing him. Its sad..

  • yea i know...all of that really hardened her along with the cruel life that she lived before Chiyo even came to Kyoto.

  • Yeah...she wasnt evil and that music when she was sitting in the fire made it even sadder...I wonder what the person singing the song was saying?

  • Oh yeah, that General man, did Hotsumomo do him and the Baron too? She seems to know them very well.

  • It doesn't say. Geisha entertain many men, so it is possible for them to know each other well.

  • I think in the movie, they made General Tottori, Hatsumomo's danna, when he was really Sayuri's in th ebook

  • She's angry because she's jealous of Sayuri

  • 0:37 until 0:51 = Amazing.

The look she gives at 1:15 sends shivers down my spine everytime.

  • why is Hotsummomo angry??

  • because she is jealous of sayuri, that she has everything now

  • Wow! I love this scene, it made me cry. I know Hatsumomo is cruel but deep down she is bitter with jealousy. But there is no hope left for her, so she simply resigns. It is sad how Sayuri releases that they are acually very similar, and says she could be looking into her own future. The singing music was haunting, this is powerful scene.

  • What a BITCH! I wish she could have burned in the fire like the witch she is!

  • no...that would be mother or Mrs. Nitta. she runs the oikiya. then the other woman is granny, whom is Mrs. Nitta's mother.

  • Could she adopt both girls if she wanted to?

  • no. only one girl can inherit the oikiya. I'm not really sure as to why though...

  • No not that lady, I'm talking about he woman that chose Chiyo and not her sister remember when the girls was brought there and she chose between them?

  • Oh her...it wasn't adopting them. It was buying them. She bought girls that she thought would be pretty enough to become geisha or at least to work as slaves. At the time, she probably only wanted one more girl so she chose Chiyo. In the book it describe's Chiyo's sister as being rather unattractive, which is probably why she ended up as a prostitute.

  • Did that Koichi dude Hotsummomo's boyfriend, does he really been giving her money or does Hotsummomo really be giving men more than just dances?

  • We don't realy know...it doesn't say in the book. They were just lovers. For once things between her and a man werent about money. It was just about love and the two of them giving in to it. Yes, she was definitely giving him more than just dances, but chances are he wasnt paying her for the private time that they spent together.

  • All the women that lived in that okyia were not related by blood. Granny adopted Mother, Auntie was brought to the okyia to learn to become Geisha. She did not do well, she, according to the book, was too ugly and then granny broke Auntie's hip during a beating and it never healed right.

  • In the book, Hatsummomo read sayuri's diary. In the movie, she noticed the initials on the hankerchief and made an educated guess. Hatsummomo is very smart and she guessed that was who they would go to. she stalked them and asked around. she figured it out by looking at who Mameha and Sayuri were entertaining frequently.

  • Why doesn't she just worry about Pumpkin getting bid for instead of spreading rumors about Chiyo sleeping with sailors?

  • Because, although they don't really portray this in the movie, Pumpkin isn't an amazing geisha. She doesn't have anything special about her like Sayuri has her eyes. She also isn't good in dance or playing the shamiisen. Also, by now, Pumpkin is a full fledged geisha, meaning she's already has her mizuage. Oh, and Hatsummomo wants to ruin sayuri's career. she figures as soon as she does that, she can focuss on Pumpkin getting adopted by the Nitta.

  • Sorry about the questions. I'm just trying to understand this movie.

Is Ms. Nitta and that other lady, sitting beside her adopted sisters?

  • huh? sorry, can you rephrase that? Oh and no problem! any questions u have I'll be happy to answer. if u hve a question on one of the other videos, feel free to message me!

  • Remember the part when Okasan was waiting for the bidding for Sayuri, You seen that lady beside her saying unbelievable about how much money was bid for her. Is that her sister?

  • Did Hotsummomo owe them allot of money for what she did to Chiyo's kimonos and the okiya?

  • I don't know...I read the book and i don't recall a fire. Then again, my memory might have failed me. Surely, though, you can bet that she did have a great debt.

  • Now that Chiyo is that woman's daughter, do they have to leave?

  • Not in the book...in the book Hatsummomo just had to respect Sayuri. Pumpkin too. Read the book though...it is so good!

  • How did Hotsummomo know about her crush on the Chairman and the hankerchief?

  • How did Hotsummomo know about the men that Nameha and Sayuri were going to see to want to bid for her?

  • i like both the book and the adaptation. very rich in both culture and history... and all aspects of plot.

  • kool!! i want to read the book but i cant find it in the book store or libary!! lol am gonna ask my cousin cuz she has tons of books!! lol

  • right the difference between the book and the movie is TOO great for me... u see i perfered the book as it portrayed nobu as an opinionated amazing guy who had an aura that demanded respect. i loved that about him... here.. his just another man going goey eyed over a girl. also in the book i disliked chiyo as her blindness to reality and head full of fairytails made life almost difficult for her almost deminishing all she worked hard for!

  • did he say "I love you" 4:50?

  • nope,, he said " i will" and then " express your gratitude to nobu-san"

  • yh he did say "i love u" then "i just wanted you to know that"

  • that's what I thought! lol :]

  • the movie and the book are so different wtf

  • They changed so much from the book, it is almost like a different story. In the book she has a danna, and nobu is the one that offers her safety, and a lot of other things that really make the story so much better are forgotten.

  • Geisha dont have a certain hairstyle. They can wear their hair how they want it after their Mizuage, when they become a fully fledged Geisha. If you read the book, Sayuri refers to wearing several different hairstyles. Only the apprentices have to wear their hair in a certain style; 'momoware' the 'Split Peach'

  • War! What is it good for?

  • the book is much better...

  • I dnt get this movie..

  • Aww... people are saying bad things about Gongli or Hatsumomo. But I think if people hated her character, Gongli did some good acting as the villain ^^

  • manga de forros y ortibas

  • Waaah this is wonderful!!!

    ^_^

  • hello hello eco........is some one there why they take the geishas to osaka i dont understand inglish to much and in spanish is not this part on video

  • hatsumomo's pwetty...too bad she's the bad huy

  • in the book, when sayuri moved into hatsumomo's room, she stole her diary not handkerchief. sayuri outsmarted her & took it back. there was no fire & sayuri had a danna. however he was arrested & had no power out of jail, so nobu saved sayuri w/ the job making parachutes. also, nobu gave her the rock to give back when he became her danna & asked her to entertain the JAPANESE financer (aka the american). the movie is not the same as the book really, but i still like it :)

  • What is a danna? Is it a husband?

  • a danna is a faithful patron of a geisha that will buy her jewels, makeup, kimonos, gifts in general, etc. in the hopes that she'll marry him or become his mistress.

  • Corrr I could do with a danna ;D thankyou for the explaination <3

  • People also often refer to their husband as "danna" or someone else's husband as "danna-san" but for a geisha it is as you said.

  • It is a man who pays all your expenses as a geisha, like the baron was to mameha

  • yeah.,....i prefer the book,too...but i still love the movie..

  • mention chairman and away she goes

  • lmao

  • yeAh....

  • why they take the geishas to osaka?

  • You see that shot of Hatsumomo's eyes through the fire and you think (1) yeah, she's nuts, but then (2) you know she must be thinking, with all of her glamour and promise as a geisha and her ability to actually combat Sayuri, this is not how she envisioned her life turning out. She gave up her own personal happiness to be a geisha, and, in her mind, this is not the ending she deserves.

  • gong li is also the empress in curse of the golden flower - just fyi

  • Hatsumomo i great !

  • whats the song called when hahtsumahmah goes away ? it's beautiful !

  • Hahtsumahmah is truley and for surely INSANE!!!

  • it's hatsumomo

  • blue eyed , nice

  • Huh??? i dont get it. Why were there soldiers?? Why did the geisha have to go to osaka??

  • WWII

  • because of world war 2

  • hatsumomo Also played in Hero didn't she :O

She's realy pretty Bitch here :P

  • no, gong li (hatsumomo) didn't play in hero

    but zhang ziyi (sayuri) did

  • No. Gong Li did not play in Hero. The older woman in that movie was Maggie Cheung. Ziyi Zhang who plays Sayuri in this movie did play in Hero.

Gong Li also plays in "The Curse Of The Golden Flower", and "Raise The Red Lantern." Both excellent movies.

  • I like this movie~

  • its abit different from e book huh?

i nver see nobu san get angry b4..lol

  • thanks for ruining the book for me lol i haven't gotten to that part yet lol

    but it's all good.

  • I hate that too, but its not definite of what became of her, Sayrui only "imagine" this, n then there was talk of one guy sayin he saw her in a prostitue district, but when Sayuri went to go check it out , Hatsumoho was no where 2 be found... I guess i kinda ruined it 2 in anotha way sorry dude...

  • i'm at that part now.

  • hatsumomo is still really pretty...even if she is a bitch:P

  • what happens to hatsumomo after the the fire? does anyone know?

  • they throw her out, and she has no place to live not sure if she could go to another geisha house, or would end up in the pleasure district as a prostitute.

  • Hatsu's hair reminds me of Amy Winehouse's...nasty!

  • correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure in the book that scene with the fire never happened.

  • how do they get out of the fire?

  • had anyone of you read the book ? t seems not to be so , because if you had read them you`d know what hatsumomo feels ..

  • i wish hatsumomo's hair caught on fire when breaking those lanps. lol kinda like the stewart of gonder in lord of the rings lol

  • This is one of my favorite movies.

    Sayuri is so gorgeous.

  • I love Hatsumomo. I could cry when she turns back to look at Sayuri's face when she leaves. The music goes higher and it's so sad.

They are nearly the same. When Sayuri cries at the end of the film to Mameha, she says she wants a life that owns her. And that is all Hatsumomo wants too.

    Sad. ♥

  • i love the music when hatsumomo is like sitting around the fire. its perfect for the scene.

  • Why does Hatsumomo (or however you spell it)always wear her hair all down and looking like a prostitute? Just wondering.

  • idk but she does, lol.

  • well..i think she is..bc of her 'b/f' XP

  • Not sure why but it makes her look quite lost and demonic really doesn't it? She looks much more sinister than if she had her hair up. Anyway there was a rumour mentioned briefly in the book that she was thrown out of the okiya and turned to prostitution...or she drank herself to death.

  • she wears her hair down as a symbol of her rebellion and disregard for the rules.

  • WHATS A BITCH i would of killed her by now!!!

  • are there still geishas in japan now? like present day, cus this was 50 somthing years ago.

  • wrong yes there are, there are just much much much less and they mostly live or all live in kyoto

  • there are still geisha's in japan but it is a dying art but from what i remember they all live in kyoto.

  • the war was between japan and america at that time??

  • It was WWII. So yes. America was part of the Allies and Japan a part of the Axis. But I'm pretty sure this was after the atomic bombs, so Japan would have already surrendered. And so America made military bases there.
