It s great to see this clip . I saw Lush in Harriet island MN in the summer of 1992 . I forgot about them , musically you could say until 2002 ; when i obtained spooky and brought back the memories from seeing them live . Thanks for posting this . Lush is remembered dearly amongst its most loyal fans . -
I know shit from Dennis Miller, but it sounds like his researchers actually booked a decent band for a change. Like Terry Wogan in this country, you'd occasionally look up and go - "oh fuck - he accidentally booked the Bangles".
I'd like to thank some of the small-minded, intolerant haters of anyone who disagrees with their viewpoint for showing, for the upteenth time, what they really are -- totalitarian fascists of the political Left.
THANK GOD THAT SOMEONE LIKE MATTHEW HERE........ knows how to lay it out.... When you can't see your doctor........... You will know something......... So, Pacific, shut your GOB!
So now totalitarianism equates to western liberalism? Nice grasp of political and social science there... I can't help but point out that anyone who equates the progressive left of this country to past failed fascist/authoritarian/totalitarian dictatorships has got the same understanding of geopolitics as that of a 14 yr old who's never been laid. Please go read some books.
it was a joke...lighten up. and don't take my word for it, check basically everyone who's ever had anything to say on the matter (besides douchebag conservatives trying to sell books), and you'll figure it out - fascism = anti-liberal. and yes MODERN liberalism is what I was talking about - it has absolutely fuck all to do with authoritarian dictatorships.
Modern "liberals" are illiberal. Ask the college protestors who BURN BOOKS written by conservatives who they then call Nazi's and try to shut down from speaking on campus.
I'm just about done with you, btw.
One more: Who invented politically correct speech? The Left, not the Right.
"chucked" at him. Somehow, that seems more of an appropriate description. To HELL WITH THAT! It's Lush that I love so damn much!!! I suppose it was Chris' actions that choked off the future of this incredible band, but I dare not place blame on Chris! I'm so sorry for Chris. and I wish to hell that they could have become superstars. All is not lost, however. My advice is to connect up with Robin Guthrie again and to see what might happen as a result of those recording sessions.
dude was never liberal, and I was fan since his black and white special on HBO in like '90. he ripped on everyone equally...then he blew a gasket and started sounded like Cheney, and that's when most folks decided they wouldn't wipe their ass with his mug.

If you like this guitar, go buy every Smiths album and you'll see where this "signature" sound came from! I heard this song the otherday and thought it was the Smiths band doing the studio work for a female vocalist. Excellent imitation of the Smiths sound!
By the way- Dennis Miller still is cool. Did it surprise you that the funniest/smartest guy on SNL was a conservative the whole time?
Holy shiite! Tone is right. Sorta: I just clicked on some Smiths videos. The very first one- "There is a light..." sounded exactly like "For Love". It's almost like they ripped it. But the next 3 Smiths songs all sounded exactly the same as the first. However, most of lush's songs don't sound like that. Lush's "sig sound", if they had one, was much heartier... beefier, louder...whereas those Smiths songs are all tame radio music.
I remember the term the press always used was "Wall of sound".
So if lush had a signature sound, it sure wasn't "For Love". To understand, try listening to their earliest stuff like "Downer" (1990) and middle stuff like "Nothing Natural", "Superblast", "Laura" (1992), "Undertow" and "Starlust" (1994)... all the way till their latest, like "Heavenly Nobodies", "Runaway" and "The Childcatcher" (1996).
Of course I say lush was the best, and most varied band ever! They had everything form thrashing punk songs like "Leaves Me cold", "Second Sight", "Hypocrite" and "Piledriver", to freakin' nursery rhymes like "500" and "Cat's Corus". Oh yeah! They even had jazz! There was "Cul de Sac" and "Matador". And Country! ("Pudding)... And "Astronaut" and "Light From a Dead Star" were like operatic!
But the best song ever is "Ocean" by lush.
BTW, The only real, not CON-servative left is Ron Paul.
...and Dennis Miller was good at Weekend Update, but I think decades of Box Office sales from so many other SNL alumni prove you wrong about him being the funniest.
I agree, Spooky and Gala were my fav Lush disks. The other albums and EP's (Check out "Plums and Oranges") had some great tunes (mostly by Emma), but sound quite different. I think they were a great band..
Well - I appreciate what you're saying, but to me, they were a schizophrenic band - much like the Cure. They had pop songs with shoegazer influence and poppy shoegazer songs.
"Runaway" and "The Childcatcher" have more in common, to my ear, with "For Love" than they do with the more obtuse "Undertow" and "Nothing Natural". Think about how rock-y (verse-chorus-verse) they are compared to the "scene-setting" of "Undertow" and "Nothing Natural".
I'm not sure about Miller's political views thru his life - I think he may have been a garden-variety Democrat earlier. He may have had a "conversion" along the lines of Hitchens. I find it refreshing.

Dennis Miler happens to suck on GOP WANG! You may have "chucked" at him, before, but now he deserves flying spit wads from every single direction. That is, from anyone who has a brain and a conscience.
"The funniest/smartest...." Good god, Pal - you need a high-powered colonic!!
This was likely 1992 or early '93. The song was the first single from the album "Spooky." I was lucky enough to have seen them tour for each of their albums (and met them outside of the Glam Slam in LA when they played there. Shitty club lost the sound system that night and we had to come back the next night). Best shows (IMHO) were at the Roxy (when they toured with RIDE) and at the Filmore in SF (when they played with Scheer, Mojave 3 and Imperial Teen). I really miss them!
I first heard of Lush when I saw them at Lollapaloosa in 1992 & fell in love. I miss them so much. This brings back so many memories. They were an amasing live band & were one of the originators of the brit pop scene of the 90's.
Notice the very rare guitars Miki and Emma used to play on : 12-strings Gibson ES-335 and hollow-body Fender Deluxe Telecaster. Try to find such gear at your local retailer... The 12-strings electrics are a big lot of the Lush sound, this video shows it well.
Miki is recording vocals on 4 songs for the new Seinking Ships album june 2007, due out in 2008... Can anyone read whats written on the handwritten note stuck to Miki's guitar during this performance on Dennis Miller Show???
Total crush on Miki and Emma, love their music but Christ was this band BORING

omfg...dude: protip - progressive liberalism and fascism have nothing to do with one another. read a book.
rovingstarone 2 years ago
How about "Liberal Fascism" by Jonah Goldberg? That's a good book.
And there most definitely is a totalitarian, fascist aspect to the Left. Ever hear of Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and Ho Chi Minh? Just to name a few?

And a book by an editor from the National Review doesn't count. jesus h. christ. Fascism is anti-liberal by nature.
Point remains, Dennis Miller was an equal opportunity hater and moderate, and is now a douchebag of the highest order.

No, the point remains the hater is YOU.
And by liberal, we're talking MODERN liberalism, not classical, and modern liberals have a totalitarian impulse.
