It is absolutely clear based on the evidence: compare today with 30-50 years ago. The average number of calories consumed per day is up, and the average amount of activity/calorie burning is down. Television watching, a sedentary activity, is way up (along with computer and gaming activity), and the number calories consumed are way up. That translates into weight gain. That accounts for the obesity epidemic. It's not any more debatable than evolution.
Weight loss, by and large, however, has nothing to do with the options at restaurants today. It is very easy to get apple slices and carrots today, and the options are limitless. Even at fast food restaurants, they sell healthier options with vegetables. The difficult reality is that, regardless of what people eat, they eat too much in relation to their physical activity. That's what causes obesity.
The issue is not whether there are or are not options. The issue is whether the government is telling private businesses what to sell. I don't think it's a big deal for Mrs. Obama to suggest that restaurants sell healthier options. That's no different than Arnold Swartzenegger advocating diet and exercise. No problem with that at all.
I disagree, however, if we were to go beyond that and have government regulation setting diets and menus.

Encourage all the educational districts to adopt the Harkness method, put an emphasis on creativity and critical thinking, make Latin mandatory, and also make sociology, satire, and international relations required courses instead of just electives. Television watching, a sedentary activity, is way up (along with computer and gaming activity), and the number calories consumed are way up. That translates into weight gain. That accounts for the obesity epidemic. It's not any more debatable than evolution.
