  • Those phones cost $8,000 in 1981.

  • Those things the citizens are calling the cops on are not phones. Those are C.B. Radios. Cell phones in 1981 were for the super rich. Actually, I don't think (correct me if I'm wrong) they were available period until 1982.

  • hey police there is a strange dog in a trench coat...he looks like he might flash his doggie nuggets

  • nigga stole my bike

  • Wow, Crime is really sour-tasting.

  • fun fact: McGruff has a cousin who lives in Manhattan. Even stranger is his cousin is ALSO a crime fighter, though for some reason the two never got along very well. something about his cousin's partner, this rabbit... thing... and something about basic ethics and sanity and the sort.

I asked McGruff about it once and he just said that a "freelance policeman" is NOT a legitimate form of employment in the criminal justice system...

  • More like the black guy would be doing the robbing and the white guy would be calling the cops. Am I right? lol

  • Snitches

  • yeah i bet that was really common in the eighties, old ladies and black dudes patrollin the neighborhood with dynatac phones ready to report crime

  • Minnie Marth looks the kind of woman who has nothing better to do except "watching" the neighbourhood 24/7 with a huge phone at hand. :/

  • Years later, Albert Bell would reunite with McGruff along with two kids who told a young drug addict to leave an arcade in another classic ad, as Ralph Edwards would say to McGruff, "This is Your Life!"

  • She could just go beat him over the head with that phone. That'd take care of it. LOL

  • it seems like the police actually gave a damn back then

  • @rayblack2004 I think it's just a "Boy Cried Wolf" Effect ): You'd think with the advancement in technology there'd be more police stationed and on patrol.

  • "my opinion's validity requires you to know what i am"

  • 0:09 one big phone

  • SNITCHES GET STITCHES

  • In Soviet Russia, crime takes a bite out of you!

  • Im in 3rd grade and I went to a assembely and saw McGruff.

  • @Nick2021748 good for you?

  • 1.McGuff may act like tough shit when it comes to crime prvention but whenever he acctually sees a crime he just stands back and watches

2.Regular people like you and ME?Uhhh last time I checked you 're an anamorphic 3 foot beagle with a treanchcoat, not a person.

3.Wouldn't it be oblivious who was reporting you to the police with those Big ass "Cell Phones"

  • lmfao

  • SNITCH!!!!!!!!

  • They've changed it; now it's Chicago, IL 60652. LOL

  • What happened to "Chicago Illinois 60652"?

Loving these commercials. Even the "non-scary" PSAs really scare the hell out of me!

  • Take a bite out of crime!

  • Well, if the guy was actually stealing the bike, he could say he was taking the bike to fix it for a friend that was away/on vacation as a favor that was promised and no he didn't have their number with him to call and that his friend would pick it up later when he got back. The police would believe him, it would work, and then he could run like hell with it.

  • What if the guy was taking the bike to the repair shop for a friend and Grandma there calls the cops and they arrest the poor guy?

  • Bad time of day to be breaking into somebody's home.

  • holy S*** look at the size of that whatchamacallit!!!

  • I cant breathe. I am laughing so hard at Granny calling in the crime on a Walkie so big she is about to fall over! How Discrete are you if the walkie is HUGE! omg i cant stop laughing.

  • GOD I LOVED THESE KIND OF KINDS OF Commercials!

  • lol

  • I like the for more info mail this address. Wow have things changed, now all you have to do is log onto their website and get bombarded with ads...

  • is that a cell phone?

  • WALKIE TALKIE

  • The Van, the ultimate vehicle for any creepy guy, whether he's stashing a stolen bike or holding several hostages.

As Demetri Martin said, "A room with no windows that moves around? Sign me up!"

  • A bus driver recently stopped his bus,got out and punched McGruff full in the face, with a bunch of kids watching,no less. He said he "thought it would be funny". Since the guy in the costume was an actual, factual COP,the bus driver is likely in some deep shit...

  • hahahaha wired these walkie talkie is betetr then cell phones they bel;t them strong

  • Something tells me McGruff put those people up to it, told him he'd split the profits, and not to worry, "he'd have their backs" and then sold them out. McGruff is a shady character, god only knows what's under that trench coat.

  • McGruff is such a badass!

  • that big ass phone

  • take a bite out of crime. reminds me of the fresh prince episode when will changes phil's political running tape to him saying "ill take a bite out of crime". he then eats a rather large waffle in one bite. lol

  • you see that guy, he's stealing that bike

  • oh my god, freaking cellphones

  • why dosent mcgruff do anything himself? hes a fucking 8 foot tall dog! he could take a bite for himself lol

  • See that guy?

    He's Stealing that bike...

  • Would you not look a bit conspicous carring a huge phone like that

  • @fattoler Lol that looks like a fucking al queda bomb trigger i get your point

  • @fattoler LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If your calling the cops right next to them like in this commercial...what if they see you and try to attack you with a gun?

  • things were much more simple in the 80's.

what a wonderfully modern age we live in.

  • Heh, was that sarcasm in that last line?

  • Who provided the voice of McGruff the crime dog?

  • I wondered that also....

  • I wonder if McGruff helped get the idea for the tv show 21 Jump Street you know a show about underage looking cops still in high school busting the bad guys.

  • these psa commercials were the man!!!! mcgruff was the bomb!!!!!! good job mcgruff!!!!

  • McGruff rocked so much it makes me want to cry. You know how much awesomeness that is!?

  • Everything about the 80's was just so awesome! I know exactly what u mean!

  • God I love scruff. But how do you write to him? There is no street address. All it says is

    Scruff Mcgruff Chicago Illinois 60652.

  • Nice cell phones, citizens

  • Good job Mcgruff, you revealed the secret identidies of the volunteers now they have a giant smile from their ears to they`re troath!!!!

  • Good job Mcgruff, you revealed the secret identidies of the volunteers now they have a giant smile from their ears to they`re troath!!!!

  • mcgruff is a snitch

  • Snitches Get Stabed

    Stabbing Time

  • I prefer the word RAT!

Lets get stabby stabby on the rat!!

  • If you weren't so busy breaking the fucking law, you wouldn't have to worry about it so much, scumbag.

  • Hail Sneaky McGruff, the canine detective who takes a bite from the bargi falafel of crime!

  • Glad to see Albert Bell got out of the neighborhood watch program and went on to have a pretty nice baseball career.

  • lol

  • McGruff promotes secret police haha

  • Who gives a fuck about some punk ass bitch coming after you for reporting crime. If its just some thief I'd whop their ass. On the other hand if I was to deal with a person connected its another story altogether.

  • So what if the perpetrators see you standing there, looking at them, using a phone? What it makes them come after you? Even if you do get them arrested, what if they esape or get released on a technicality and come looking for you? The snitcher should at least hide around a corner while watching the perpetrator. Nice, memorable PSA though!

  • Those phones looked like clock radios with antennas sticking out of them.

  • If that is an early cellphone, I'm not surprised how big it is. They say that the earliest cellphones where way too big to put in a purse.

  • I think it's a walkie talkie, not a cell phone.

  • that is definitely an early '80's cell phone

  • Nah...it's a walkie talkie. They're talking into it like a walkie talkie, not a phone.

  • I wonder if McGruff did PSA's about spouse abuse

  • I bet McGruff has his CC permit. I wonder what he carries?

  • .44 mag

  • ahh the mean streets of hartford

  • hahahaha!

  • LOL!!!
