the Confederacy was literally founded on racism. their constitution makes it incredibly clear that 'the negro' was considered much less than 'the white man'. dixie is a catchy tune but the imagery and the aesthetic are unambiguously racist.
@phalsebob During the Civil Rights movement, some of those who were anti-black took up the Confederate flag (and the symbolism that went with it, including 'Dixie') as their symbols. Many saw this and it was forever stained with that memory. For me, and most of the rest of my comrades, it's just a beautiful song that represents our states and our nation. Remember that.
@startrekern Just did a bit of research on the song. It has significant, if contested, racist connotations. I'm happy to accept your insults although "historically ignorant" doesn't stick.
@phalsebob Ah, now, see; you want to have an intelligent discussion instead of calling anyone with confederate sentiments terrorists. Now, the song 'An American Trilogy', written by Mickey Newbury, has both a Southern song (Dixie), a Northern battle song (The Battle Hymn of the Republic) and a slave song called 'All My Sorrows' combined in with it. A very beautiful rendition of all of the above, it was meant to bring people together. As for your thoughts that Dixie has racist connotations,
@phalsebob I personally disagree. It is the anthem of a nation. It may be easy to misunderstand to outsiders, but in the South there is still a significant culture (no, not rednecks) of anti-federalism, and independence. Many people, myself included, feel more loyalty to their individual states than to the Feds. 'Dixie' itself, while ironically written by a Northerner, still remains popular to this day. Now, the reason many think Dixie is racist is because they have been taught to believe this;
I have never particularly been an Elvis fan, and I am not American, but fucking hell... this video - with Eric's sweet and powerful voice, had me in tears. When Manowar do songs like this and Nessun Dorma, it sounds like one of their own. Eric has that kind of voice that makes a song his own when he sings it. He steps right into the spirit of the song and becomes at one with it.
@Primordialfan1 ...Yes. Your right. Not everyone likes what I like (What is it that I like again?). Not everyone likes what you like either. And you surely as hell don't like what I like (except this song, perhaps?). So tell me, what exactly makes me a poser? Is it that I made a comment that resembles other people's comments? Lots of people say what I said within those parameters. Anyway I do very much like Manowar, and I hate pop mainstream. Does that make me a poser?

These songs are at least 150 years old. A song has to be catchy, or no one would remember it for that long.
They were power ballads -- more so than Manowar now, actually. They were power enough to inspire people to fight to the death in the American Civil War.

The weird thing is, I'm not even American yet i LOVE this cover !!!! I just think it's so musical and ctchy and everything a song should be !!!!! Is it just me or does this cover sound like a power ballad?

These songs are at least 150 years old. A song has to be catchy, or no one would remember it for that long.
They were power ballads -- more so than Manowar now, actually. They were power enough to inspire people to fight to the death in the American Civil War.
