This is what brought the attention to the fact that america's infrastructure needs repairs all across the country and it was because the bridge was getting old and i guess one last rush hour was all it needed. they repaired about six bridges here in denver after this but the damage is occurring faster than we can fix it. not only that but it's costing billions of dollars in tax payers money every year.

The original span, built in the 60's, was due for an upgrade. It was too old and could not handle the excess weight. Inspectors and engineers warned that the bridge needed repairs asap. but city officials did very little to move forward. The victim's blood is on their hands, in my opinion.

In my city, there's a bridge that's over 100 years old, that they keep closing down for repairs because it's falling apart, and then there's another bridge that's about 90 years old that's made of inferior cement and big chunks of it keep falling into the river. (and when it was being built someone fell into one of the forms and is still there today)

There were actually plenty of warning signs. MnDOT, the owner of the bridge and governing body in charge of roads in Minnesota ignored them. Two different groups did an analysis on the bridge. One stated it was in poor condition and gave 3 options. (Full repair, 1/2 repair, or more frequent monitoring.) The U of M's Civil Engineering Dept's analysis stated the bridge WOULD collapse if no action was taken, and none was. MnDOT is probably the worst DOT operation in this country.
