Thatcher chose Major because she expected him to be less subservient to the her enemies and more in tune with her. Being a new man, he was more beholden to her than to his Cabinet colleagues or fellow MPs.

@edmilfan69 Unlikely, he was divorced from her mother and had remarried. He however did go on a diet immediately after leaving office.
