The Mande Empire covers several countries in West Africa, but my guess is that the similarity to the term Jeli is accidental.
Regardless, I love this video clip! I heard this music in Tamale in Northern Ghana back in 1992, and this is the first time that I have seen a video or audio recording of this music. Bravo!
