So that's where Ludia got that awful theme for their version of PYL on Wii, PS3, PC, and IDevices. It was the original, original theme. The version they went with was much better.
Thorn-EMI Video (which later became Thorn-EMI/HBO Video and then later became HBO/Cannon Video) used the pilot's theme music in their promos for Australia and New Zealand.
"godawful music"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? Are you and I listening to the same theme music? Who gave you the right to say this was a bad theme song and "godawful" at that? Get the hell out of here with that bullshit!!!!!
It's not AWFUL...unless you hear the full version...in which it transitions into some infomercial-sounding muzak. The part we hear just sounds like a remixed version of the theme we all know and love. And one with not as much punch.
According to the Closing Logos page..this was used to promote Thorn-EMI Video movies in Australia (of course, Thorn-EMI Video then became Thorn-EMI-HBO Video and finally HBO-Cannon Video..and they all shared the same music).
Question: A Carruthers Co. Presentation is in a what library of what game show production: By itself, A Reg Grundy Productions, A Fremantle Media Productions, or A Mark Goodson Television Production.
Announcers have certain ways of changing their voices just like any other people. It is Rod Roddy...remember Rod didn't start on the Price is Right until like 1985?
Yes. That was the great Rod Roddy. Before he announced TPIR, he was the narrator on the sitcom 'Soap', and did other games such as NBC's Hit Man (ironically, Tomarken's 1st show), and CBS' WHEW! hosted by Tom Kennedy.
Robert Ray "Rod" Roddy (September 28, 1937 October 27, 2003) was an American radio and television announcer.[1] He is known primarily for his role as the announcer on both CBS game shows, Press Your Luck, and most notably, The Price Is Right, a role he assumed after the death of that show's previous announcer, Johnny Olson, in 1985.
Wow this didn't last long at all b/c by the end of 1982 the Whammy buzzer sound was added, the title design was changed, slides had more colors, and the board sounds sped up and matched the pace of the selected squares (actually that might have been in 83 sometime. Peter's later hair (1984-86) was much better too, he still looks 70's with that due.
The episode of Second Chance that's in circulation is the pilot episode. Bill Carruthers must have liked using the same runthrough contestants, of which Maggie and Jack are probably the two most prolific.
Maggie and Jack were pretty much Gameshow ringers, going on pilots and such all the time. They were on plenty of other pilots as well, not just PYL and Second Chance.
Very Atari! Gotta love (or maybe hate) the 80s for that transition to "high tech". What's with her hair??? Again...the 80s were strange (early 80s anyhow).
The title, the music, and the board sound are all awful cause it's a pilot. Most pilots are awful in that respect, cause the purpose of a pilot is just to pitch the format. Cosmetics can be taken care of if the series gets picked up.
I would like to see the whole episode of the Press Your Luck Pilot here on YouTube. If you think about it, they have the whole episode of Press Your Luck with Michael Larson posted onto YouTube.
This video came the original "Press Your Luck" Homepage -- that was a time long before YouTube... and a time when servers didn't have infinite space, and digital video files had to be cut down significantly.
It was also used in a New York Times radio ad from this era. A number of industrial pieces have gotten several re-uses. I heard the in-show highlight music from the first five years of "This Week In Baseball" everywhere as a kid. The killer was hearing some upbeat fun music from "TWIB"'s previews of the 1979 baseball season - and remembering it had been on a commemorative baseball album on Yankee Stadium's first half century, five-plus years earlier.
this is godawful. good thing they fixed it for the other episodes
also...... the music/board sound on PYL for the wii aint god awful. its fixed like the music and board sound on the future episodes

Two thoughts:
1. How ironic is it that one of the contestants on the pilot of Second Chance, the predecessor to PYL, was on the pilot of Press Your Luck?
2. The Press Your Luck logo on here looks cooler than the one they would always use after, IMO.

@jimbo2346 I love the famous logo (it's supposed to be mocking the buzz-in buttons), but this pilot logo is more fitting. It makes me think of money.

Well that is what a Pilot is all about. Keep the intro music and tell the music scorer to compose a better piece. Well you got it.

@donmccullen It was actually stock (library) music. The real theme was sort of a remix of this.
