  • Glazunov sounds very weak after Rachmaninov but why so much from the 2nd and nothing from the 3rd? The second movement from the latter is probably the finest music Rach. ever wrote.

  • It is true that Glazunov & his orchestra were not fully prepared to conduct Rachmaninoff's masterpiece, the First Symphony. And Glazunov was not a great conductor. That said, orchestras at that time (1897) were not the orchestras we know today. They were more limited and quite provincial in the music they played (not all of them, llike the Berlin Phil.). Quite often they turned down works because they were deemed "unplayable". Rachmaninoff's First Symphony was ahead if its times, pure & simple.

  • When I heard the Rach Sym. 1 on the Radio (after I heard about that sad premiere), I was furious Glazunov would ruin such a beautiful piece! What a villain! But I learned later he didn't really hate the piece. More likely stage-fright/stress had compelled him to drink, after all, it's a long, hard symphony to conduct.

It should be noted they never hated each other, for their music or as people, and were in fact friends. They actually have a lot in common... more than people may know.

  • it's ironic that glazunov's symphonies are on a video with rach's because the former ruined the latter's premiere by conducting drunk!

  • Cuentan que Glazunov estaba borracho cuando dirigió el estreno de la primera sinfonía de Rachmaninov y que la ejecución fue un desastre.

  • Scherzo from Glazunov's fifth symphony is also very fantastic.

  • Suprised you never included Rach's 3rd Symphony. I favour it to his 1st. The first movement especially. The theme is absolute bliss.

  • they are actually quite good, i just have very bad add.

  • Rachmaninoff is a legend!

  • represent the romantic tradition!!!!!

  • whats the sympoiny that goes ba de wa yo, ba des wa yaaa aaa pintaaaa,ba dess wa yoo,ba des wa na na chimee

  • The great Rachmaninov 1st symphony. The premier failure, the 'symphony from hell' Rachmaninov never heard it again - in the drawer until after 1943. The masterly Glazunov, Symphony No 5 is probably his best but don't forget 1,4,6 and 7 in my listening experience. And Vaughan Williams one of the five great 20th century symphonists. Symphony No 3 being a 'war symphony' despite it's pastoral mode. His best symphonies for me being 1,2,4,6,8 and 9, though not sampled here.

  • I love the second movement of Rachmaninoff's second symphony, most people love the third, but my favourtie movement is the second. Thanks for including it!

  • 4:30 is the best section of third movement.

But the best moment in the symphony is the 4th movment.

  • This is really power of classical we must praise him. his music can change the spirit of people.. Today I success to make my friend love in music esspecially classical... he was ruined with this music(rachmaninoff)after I gave him a few days ago... I feel happy i have successfully to provoke him... Love rachmaninoff... ____________________ Only certain people can see the difference between an iron and a real Diamond...
  • oh nvm, i didn't realize it was a recent video.

  • i don't know these guys at all. i don't even remember the name Glazunov. i'm not priding myself in my ignorance or anything, i just don't know them.

but these guys are before stravinsky, and his symphony in 3 movements, and way before copland and his symphony no. 3. those are kind of neat, aren't they.

that would make your list of symphonies incomplete right? i'm sure there are other later guys as well.

also, these symphonies sound well formed, but not as interesting to listen to.

  • Ok, so you don't know them. This video is to introduce you to them. First, it is incomplete, since this is a series and we can suppose that it continues on.

Second, there is no "best" or "not the best" symphony. One could call the Beethoven 9th the greatest, but then I would call the 6th the greatest and maybe you would say that the 3rd is the greatest. Its just a matter of opinion. I have never heard Copland's 3rd, but as the same way you describe these symphonies, I describe the Stravinsky.

  • yup, i don't know them, i was out looking for other stuff, i happened upon this and didn't have the patience YET. if you look at most of the posters, they already know a bit, they are happy to see what composers they know and like and their symphonies represented in this video. stravinsky, i don't know his symphony really, but his ballet works are extremely entertaining to me, its easier to "feel" his ballet music.

but I totally agree with you, the 6th is sooo incredible...haha.

  • copland's third, oh, its a compilation of many of his tunes from rodeo, appalachian spring, and music for the movies, with a fanfare for the common man adaptation at the end. i'm not overly impressed by it, but i love copland and kind of hopelessly wish he could be represented. the symphony sounds a bit incoherent i think.

  • A bit confused I am here finally... Why?

Well, the video with the pianoconcertos you uploaded has the same picture with Rachmaninov, so, I thought that I was here already when I saw it in my subscriptions....

Happy !!!!..to find more here with Rachmaninov, to hear the Second Symphony, always falling in love with it again and again... and proud to hear "my" Concertgebouw Orchestra...

I cannot resist all this, and take it with me as a deep beloved treasure.

    Vaughan Williams too...........

  • Thank you for the Vaughan Williams,. For the Antartica, I thought you were going to give us the incredible climax with organ and wind machine.

I also like the bery wild opening of the 4th Symphony....

I hope, also that we will have the Scriabine Symphonies.......

  • Scraibin was in Part 7

  • Go earthatic, give us more!
