@MrVarsityphysics As much as his social prominence is a mystery to me, he is an incredibly skilled martial artist. Studied along side Bruce Lee, and was one of the few opponents Bruce considered worthy. Also fuck yeah Haake.
This song is not easy to play from a technical standpoint, or a formal standpoint. The original riff that the song is built on evolves and you have to know when it changes, and how it changes. This is very hard to play. I used to think this song was their "sell out song" b/c they gave it to guitar hero, but I think very differently about it now. This song is really good.
i Don't understand why some people spit on music they don't understand....must be because they are brainless or sitting home all day shitting in pants while listening to Backstreet boys.....
@nagumo10001 Yea they are both very talented but... Haake isn't even close to play speeds what Kollias plays.. but speed isn't everything at all ofcourse both amazing drummers <3 !
@samulipj well we dont know that..because he doesnt play brutal death metal and just because 1 drummer is a little faster....doesnt mean shit dude :P its about creativity and the mark u put on ur music
Personally I believe if you don't like a drummer's style that does not make him a poor drummer. Meshuggah does what they want and never asked anyone to like it, that's the point... they have fun and play the kind of music they want to play. Personally I think Thomas Haake's sense of timing and rhythm are uncanny.
@VYours, Dude, this song is quite a challenge to play on drums. Hell, even the picking technique is hard. It took tomas 6 months to learn the ENTIRE song. It took me 6 months to play the INTRO. And I'm not exactly a rookie... If you don't like the Djent genre, and you're gonna troll everything that comes out under said genre, all you gotta do is listen to some other form of extreme music, like Death Metal. Most of which is in 4/4, but hey, it's REALLY fast, and alot more guitar driven! :D
@clipsryan That's ironic, coming from a Meshuggah fan. Go ahead and watch a drum video of Malenchantments of the Necrosphere, and you tell me honestly which you think is harder to play, Bleed or that. Note: this is rhetorical, anyone with half a clue knows Shannon Lucas makes Thomas Haake look amateur as hell. He is the most boring drummer ever, every song is some uninspired polyrhythm on bass and an incredibly simple 2-based hand pattern that almost never changes over a whole song.
@VYours Really? I didn't hear anything that blew me away from Malenchantments, but instead of engaging in this silly argument, I'll just say that you should listen to Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree and Morgan Agren from Mats/Morgan Band to hear some incredible drumming.
@Purkinje90 That's because you've got bad ears dude. By now you need shit as bland and watered down as Thomas Haake's to hear what's going on. 4-count on one, maybe go between two, cymbals the entire song, half or whole note snare, maybe go quarter note snare for a while, etc. Now copy guitar on bass the whole time. Haake is boring trash, your brain's getting all washed out listening to Meshuggah's boring trash, lol.
@VYours Did you completely skip Destroy Erase Improve, Chaosphere, and Nothing? Those are some of the most varied, intricate, unique albums I've ever heard. ObZen my be a straightforward album, and Catch 33 may be repetitive for some, but that doesn't mean that everything Meshuggah writes is bland trash, in my own opinion. At the very least, admit that Destroy Erase Improve is a good album. This isn't a science, VYours, it's an art form.
@Purkinje90 They've been bland sell-out trash for years now. I don't consider albums from the 90s as Meshuggah, that band has long ceased to make music.
@VYours Nothing was released in 2002, but I see what you're saying. They certainly have changed in style, but I still like some of their new stuff. Pineal Gland Optics is an interesting track, and Catch 33 had its moments. I'm excited to hear where they take the sound in the new album, which will be out next year.
@VYours No matter how much you "know about metal" a) you haven't posted any videos of yourself playing and b) I will never understand why people come to these videos just to blast someone's playing, and that is exactly why you will never be a true musician. We all learn from each other, even the 3 chord punk band that you may hate at least has something to learn from, but I guess I'll just go back to complaining like 99% of the metalheads out there.
@VYours A clear sign of an immateur metal head. Difficulty is subjective and isn't the magic ingredient for a masterpiece. Comparing BDM to Meshuggah is fucking stupid and most deathcore bands were inspired by Meshuggah, idiot. Shannon is extremely predictable but morons like you think his fast playing makes him better than a drummer who can play fast and actually be technical with his rythms. Haake is an visual artist, lyricist and award winning drummer. Shannon is a nobody. Go fuck yourself.
@clipsryan Typical Meshuggah fan: ignorant, narrow-minded and mega-butthurt-defensive. (Immateur, lol.) All the djent bands that were inspired by Meshuggah are all way better (Animals, Periphery, etc.). If you knew anything about music, you'd realize the BDM song I mentioned is infinitely more varied, technical and catchier than anything Meshuggah. Meshuggah just has more press space, they're bland garbage 100%. You obviously know nothing about music. Keep talking out of your ass, fanboy.
@musicguitarlessons I'd be hesitant to take lessons from you. There is no 16/28 beat. There are X/1 X/2 X/4 X/8 X/16 X/32 beats, with X in place of a number. The beginning riff of Bleed can be described as a pattern of 3/4 over 4/4. Then they change stuff up, but bottom line is they play 4/4 with changing accentuation.
for example you can use 2/3 timing to deleneate 2 measures of a triplet in comparison to the rest of the music, equal to 1 bar. Look for Pierre Boulez and see some of his scores. Frank Zappa for another.
Anyone here noticed that how with almost every other drummer, there heads bob down to the snare beat. But Tomas' head actually bobs the other way 0_o it's like his whole mentality of Rhythm is inverted... Probably what makes him such a good drummer!
@AlMachineKTC Notes played at a much lower volume than normal hits. Notice at 0:24 how he is lightly hitting the snare to a rhythm and then hits harder for the actual accented notes.
Thomas Haake isn't just a machine, he's a robotic metronome covered in organtic material...

@Nialzzz I'm pretty sure I saw the members of linkin park picking up Tomas' spit off the ground the other day, then Tomas walked by and handed them a quarter to fight over.

I think it's amazing how well he accents the music with the cymbals. Considering the insane difficulty of just PLAYING this song, he really goes above and beyond by performing it with pure excellency.
@RonnieBlack444 Sometimes you loose your sticks and it happens more to your right hand since it's the one keeping constantly the rythm so you can't grab it back while playing, you can with the left one, so it's only usefull sometimes to have a glove to the hand that is an issue for loosing sticks.

I think it's amazing how well he accents the music with the cymbals. Considering the insane difficulty of just PLAYING this song, he really goes above and beyond by performing it with pure excellency.

such casual accuracy that you or I would have to concertrate 110% to pull off! This guy can indeed divide by zero.

Flawless! I swear he's a midi programmed robot, I've seen covers, but none of them matches up to the sheer accuracy of Tomas' footwork
Power2theFlyingV 1 year ago
@Power2theFlyingV Agreed. Only drummer I'm aware of with Tomas's robotic accuracy is Gene Hoglan.

Could anyone tell me why he's wearing a glove thing on one hand?
RonnieBlack444 1 year ago
@RonnieBlack444 Sometimes you loose your sticks and it happens more to your right hand since it's the one keeping constantly the rythm so you can't grab it back while playing, you can with the left one, so it's only usefull sometimes to have a glove to the hand that is an issue for loosing sticks.
