My siblings and I love playing the stick game to this... we do all sorts of tricks: behind the back, people standing above, or just passing back and forth! This is the best track of e papa, arohanui dame kiri!!
Very wonderfull clip. Although even you don't understand the language the song is sung, the clip and the song are so mutually complementary that you begin unintentionally to understand and get familiarised with the virgin nature and tribes of this beatiful land. Kiri Te Kanawa deserves fully to be a maori representative.
For someone to comment that this is not authentic Maori music, and even suggest that it is totally westernized, goes to show how rude, and ignorant some people are. Maori have been contributing to internationally acclaimed music for well over a hundred years, as is proven by the song "Po Atarau'. Or as is known when the song was translated into English,"Now is the Hour'. Heard of it?.
E papā Waiari (O Uncle Waiari)Taku nei mahi (All I've been doing)Taku nei mahi (All I've been doing)He tuku roimata (Is shedding tears)Ē aue, ka mate au (Alas I will die)E hine hoki mai rā (Oh darling, return to me)Ē aue, ka mate au (Alas I will die)E hine hoki mai rā (Oh darling, return to me) Māku e kaute (I will count) Ō hīkoitanga (Your footsteps)Māku e kaute (I will count)Ō hīkoitanga (Your footstep
@joseramonrojas Oh darling, come back to me. O Uncle Waiari, All I've been doing All I've been doing Is shedding tears Chorus: Alas I will die; Oh darling, return to me Alas I will die; Oh darling, return to me I will count Your footsteps I will count Your footsteps
I've been searching for a good recording to relearn this song to and make sure I got the lyrics. Thank you for sharing this video and also for typing out the lyrics for us. Much appreciated.
Love these Maori Songs as sung by Kiri. This one is one of my favorites. These films of Kiri must be over 20 years old. She looks even better now. Brava Kiri!
E não está sozinha embora não goste muito da palavra fanatismo admito que sinto uma enorme admiração por esta senhora. Deixar-me embalar pela sua voz é uma das coisas mais maravilhosas. E viva!!!! Hooray!!

Does Kiri speak Maori fluently or is this just a homage to the maori (seeing as she is maori)?

I hate to tell you all this, but this is not authentic Maori music. It's totally Westernized. Perhaps this is all that is left of the Maori songs...
