Why 45 degrees, why not 90? With 45 degrees kick you let some energy escape up and you also risk hitting his elbow with the part of the leg right under your knee, that can hurt you.
With 90 degrees all the impact force cuts the leg and thare is no risc of kicking up in his elbow.
