I totally agree with dlamars07. Rituals. Vow of secrecy. . Segregation of blacks when so many fought so hard against. If u a follower of Christ and u pledge ur alliance/allegance w/ unknown false god (myth) then u just traded Christ in for something u don't know. I have never seen any beefing. Almost every organization is represented in my family and there is playful trash talk but at the end of the day there is much love and respect for every organization and what makes them unique. From what I've seen, its usually the same thing on campus.

@bblack1989 now you sound ridiculous. Do some research. "Greek" is just short for greek letter organization. All sororities and fraternities in the U.S. have followed in the tradition of using greek letters to name their organizations since the early 1900's. It has nothing to do with the "greek" culture. The first ones that did it just thought the letters were cool and sounded cool. That's it. That's all. Today all kinds of fraternities and sororities, ethnic or otherwise, use greek letters.

In basic essences GANGS and BGLOS do parallel: Both require an initiation process and membership is a lifetime, both have colors, signs, calls, and territory (plots) that only their members and those that are given a pass can walk through. Both are bonding to their brother or sister to have their back when things "get real" and so forth. The whole beefing thing NEVER happens at my school and I go to an HBCU the love between the greeks at my school is beautiful.

Whether negative or positive, all sisterhoods and brotherhoods have the same dynamic in how they function and relate to one another. Even the KKK is a fraternity, has chapters all over, and functions much like other organizations. And gangs did not start anything. Groups have been organizing and doing things in unity since the beginning of time all over the world.

Gangs did not start as it is now. It started as an organization that was meant to protect the neighborhood from violence and to uplift the youth. A simple beef, started a whole street war, and people broke off to different sets, and wore different colors.

Any yes these organizations are GANGS...just "EDUCATED GANGS"...in fact, the MOST QUALIFIED PEOPLE now-a-days...DON'T even show up at the interesting meeting.....ITS JUST HYPE AND POPULARITY...and to continue on with tradition...WHAT ARE REALLY "black greek organizations doing in 2009.....what blood-drives? voter registrations? few scholarships here and there.....YET THEY REPRESENT over 1-2 million in membership....something to think about....ADDRESS the hazing, the paper/pledge, etc..

@dlamars07 Please don't talk about what you don't know about. You are on the outside looking in obviously. The undergrads aren't the only ones doing work. Much of the work is actually being done by the alumnae chapters. Our membership continues beyond undergrad and it's the alumnae that run the organizations. We do an extreme amount of work all while being married and having children at home. And we ARE addressing hazing which is why people are being thrown out. You know nothing about it!

agreed....THEY DON'T KNOW THEIR HISTORY FROM A "WORLD PERSPECTIVE" OR A "BIBLICAL" PERSPECTIVE in terms of joining these organizations......I DON'T THINK these organizations represent STATUS or CLASS because of the very things that you mentioned above..
