What else is to be said? I am so happy that we have this opportunity to listen to those who love to share this kind of wonderful music and their love of it radiates. Thanks for sharing. I am learning and I can hardly wait to give this gift back in turn.
'That rake up near the rafters, why leave it there so long? with a handle of the best of ash so smooth and straight and strong'. 'And mother will you tell me, why did my father frown when to make the hay last summer i climbed to take it down'
She looked into her husbands eyes while her own with light did fill....
'You'll shortly know the reason boy', says Rory of the Hill. (C J Kickham, Knocknagow and the homes of Tipperary. Rory of the Hill and his war pike hidden in the cottage 1798)
Apparently this was originally posted by someone who taped it without permission. It was a sensation for a while and had 200,000 views, but there was a dispute over the poster's refusal to acknowledge the guitarist and it was taken down. It was reposted by (I think) the fiddle player, and there's an interesting page on his website about the history behind it. I first saw it a couple of years ago, was and still am blown away by the power in it.
@malleyog It wasn't filmed without permission, as far as I can tell - Tony's always very open about letting you film. He just wishes you to ask him, and (obviously) at mention him. The old poster was extremely stupid, as I'm sure it would have been able to be kept up.
No they're not the same tune at all but are certainly members of the same melodic family. It's the second bar of the second half of the tune that suggests "Oro Se", but you'd be hard put to find any traditional melody that doesn't share some DNA with other tunes. These are two related and excellent airs, wherever they came from, and the fiddling is brilliant.
Of course the music never left us, it will always be with us, fair play to you kind sir for bringing this to my ear and admiration in abundence to the players. Oh to hear them play in an intimate setting. 1798 made imortal.
Thanks for bringing this music back, I have sorely missed it, there is something about it that moves me to another dimension, Something that we have lost along the way. Are the musicans Irish?.
sorry i can't find it right now, but if i do i will post it for sure. I am working on it by ear right now and if i get it done i will put a video of it to help out. I love this piece and i will be happy to help you learn it if i can first.
Please do! Message me when you've done this. Im working on the same. I found the sheet music and wrote the numbers in it but it needs a lot of work to sound like this. Lots of ornamentation
I found it on the session but it is not quite right. It gives me a good start though. I have been getting side tracked with another song. I am learning the version of Jerusalem Ridge off of casey driessen's 3D album.
Ok I thought I was going crazy not being able to find this, I had it in my favorites and kept looking but couldn't find it. Thank you for reposting it, I love this tune!
This video was up for about a year and half, with nearly 180,000 views. I received emails from people all over the world who were moved by it, even though no contact information was listed in the post. Nor was there any mention of Tony's brilliant playing. Music does not "belong" to anyone, but musicians should be honored for what they do. Many thanks to all those who've posted such kind comments about this music.
I've been meaning to comment on this for some time......Absolutely amazing playing. When Tony and Randal play together, something magical almost certainly happens. I am so glad That you reposted this properly, Includeing the names of the songs. I have already gotten the sheet music, and learned to play it...Absolutely brilliant...
I noticed this had been taken down for some reason. Many thanks to you for reposting, it's one of the most brilliant things on the tube and I'd be very sorry if it went missing.
the original was filmed and posted without permission being asked and when I questioned him about it I got no response. Finally I sent a personal emial which merited the most ill mannered response. For a day or so he made the clip "private" then his infantile spite got the better of him and he took down the video and another of randal and I flatpicking some jigs. pure childishness as he still has at least 3 videos of me STILL uncredited.
Well done Randal! And a substantial "up yours" to the ill mannered gobshite who posted the original without seeking permission or even crediting the musicians involved.
I always enjoy this video....Amazing!

Gorgeous fiddle tunes, and love the guitar backup. Is that played in standard or DADGAD tuning?

If souls could sing... I want mine to sound like this.
The 99 March is my absolute favourite piece of music, and this is the only place I can find it. I hope neither Randall nor Tony ever stop playing.
Cheers.
