@finnishzeldaman No, that's not true or logical. Just because it lacks certain elements that Metroid is known for doesn't make it a bad game. There is plenty of reason to buy it. It's a good game, is often very fun to play, and can be purchased for cheap. Those are good reasons.

I like this game. A lot of things are questionable (Ridley-cutscene, the amount of monologues and the lack of nunchuk) but all in all it's an interesting game and I think they should give it another go - just polishing what people didn't enjoy. Even though the game is story driven it doesn't have to be a 2 hour monologue party. Let Samus speak less and toughen her up a notch and the game is just as awesome as any Prime-game. Oh, and make the game longer and a bit less linear.
This game is now available for $10 new. Those who bought it when it was $50 should get a refund since it was and is the ONLY bad Metroid game ever. The Gameboy's Metroid 2 was far better game 20yrs ago. Sad...
Many "fans" of the metroid series bash this game because of Samus having to follow orders from someone else.. well in one of the most acclaimed games of the series, Metroid Fusion, Samus is always told where to go and what to do by her ship's computer, which is in fact named Adam.. go figure...

That's BS, and not how Samus would do it. She also breaks down at the sight of Ridly, who she's fought at LEAST 3 times before this game. Again, BS. She wouldn't all of a sudden be horrified at him. I WANTED this game to be good, and WANTED to like it, but it's just... no.
Say what you will about the games plot but this game has the best replay value of the resent console Metroid games. I love my Prime series but I only played the those games once through. I played and beat this game about 4 times and will do so again.
i hope nintendo goes back to 2d snes and nes style or gamecube metroids some people like this but i kinda fell short for me some peopel like but after every metroid game played this is my least favorite

if 1st person wasn't stationary, it would be prime. The gameplay is perfect on this game. It is the horrendous scrip that hurts it. If you are willing to look past the annoying and dry script, the game is incredibly fun.

The character of Samus has always been like this, and I think has always meant to be like this. Not forgetting, the original metroid was influenced alot by the film Alien, and if you look at Samus in this game, and Ripley in Alien, the similarities are uncanny! Even in the Prime games in the way Samus looked around in some cut scenes, she looked scared in the same way Ripley did. If you think the way Samus is portrayed in this game is different, you obviously haven't been paying attention :(

This game just threw her back in with the typical female lead that needs a crutch to lean on. The story in this game shows her as having so many issues that she is apparently trying to bury. I bet you never actually played the other Metroid games and are only making stupid comments from info you scrounged off the internet. Either that or you failed in every one you played. Samus has always been portrayed as a strong and especially independent character. Now I'm not saying that she's a stoic ice queen, as her reaction to Gandrayda's death in Prime 3 showed, but that she's not this.... THING.
@superhuman295 I haven't played the game but from what I've seen she walks perfectly normally. And I think all that stuff about boob and crouch shots is just peoples dirty minds in action. In the opening scene were Samus' suits grows around her, it zooms into the center of her chest as her suit unravels. I've seen the same with loads of male heros, but when it's a woman everyone is like "ooh! That's sexist!". They an't objectifying her, they treat her just like any other hero. :)
Blah. So much wasted potential. The gameplay is okay.... but not as good as Prime. The narration is cheesier than a daytime tv drama and is almost painful to watch. If humanizing Samus was the goal, all it's made me want to do is slap the writers for making her an angst ridden whiny teenager. I'm supposed to believe she gives up her special abilities to impress her former commander? Daddy issues much? Where is the badass, independent minded, skull crushing Samus?

the problem with the game was the intention to explain the Samus character, is fucking ridiculous, so they made a POINTLESSS GAME ABOUT SAMUS ITSELF, leaving aside the tipical Metroid game every fan wants. Is like a movie, not a game.
I think they made Samus out to be...insecure, and kind of whiny, she had some bad ass moments in Other M, but i think Team Ninja screwed up her character.

I think Other M does retain the outside personality of Samus it's just lost with the inner narrative. Samus still remains silent for most of the adventure and does not integrate with the other army members much. She still displays her ability to dominate pretty much any opponent she comes in contact with. It's just that she has more inner monologue heard in this game that is to be expected from a character who has gone through so much

That said I would like a game that follows up this gameplay style. It is a step in the right direction, side-scrolling and first person are already done so they need to try something fresh.

Other M is what every classic Metroid game fans have always wanted. I'm surprised with the amount of people who bash this game because it is different from the Metroid Prime series. This game retains the fast gameplay and all the classic aspects at their best, expressed in a 3D environment and still try to please the fans of the Prime series by keeping a bit of the first person gameplay. If you prefer Prime it's ok, but Other M is the closest approach to an ideal 3D Metroid in terms of Gameplay!
@frostmb People only focus on everything story-wise. Because creating Samus with an actual personality was never really attempted before. Because of that, they bash on it more than necessary, but to me, personally seemed like a legitamite attempt. Even though many people think that she's only meant to be a badass.

To be quite honest, the engine is there, the premise is there, but the level design is too linear, and the guy in charge of the story wanted to flesh out Samus's character without even glancing at her characterization in the previous games.

The atmosphere is awesome. The graphics are decent. The gameplay is alright. The story is absolute trash. The treatment of Samus is heretical. Samus' voice actress is even worse. Cons outweigh Pros.

You're pressing 1 to jump and 2 to shoot. You can go into first person and Morph Ball. You can't do 35-200 hit combos with a melee weapon. So Samus wall Jumps in a similar fashion to Ryu. Does that mean Super Metroid plays like ninja Gaiden on the Master System, then? No!
I really don't get the idiots who bash Team Ninja for this game's story (which is actually okay; not excellent nor horrible) and say that this game plays like Ninja Gaiden. First of all, Team Ninja was only in charge of GAMEPLAY/DESIGN AND GRAPHICS. NINTENDO DID THE STORY.
And, this game plays N O T H I N G like Ninja Gaiden. You're not inputting XY XXXY to do an Izuna Drop, sucking up your enemy's essence for a super attack, or healing yourself with potions.

This game isn't bad at all but the story isn't Metroid like either, if this was just another NEW IP game, with different characters, this could have spawned a really cool franchise. Let's hope RETRO takes back what they've revolutionize and let's hope they make a DK 3D too!
This game was really quite incredible to play, but they could have found ANYONE to voice samus and it would have been better than this. She has no emotions at all in her delivery even in dramatic scenes. The game is great, but I find it ironic that the worst part of a Metroid game is Samus herself
@TatsuMakiSeppuKyaku I think the voice actress did a bad job because the writing was so horrible. Some of those sentences would be impossible for ANYONE to make sound good. If the script was better (or any good at all) I think she would have been an okay fit for Samus.
I notice that mainstream game critics always complain about how games aren't trying anything new and then when a game DOES try something new, they don't like it. I'm sure that Other M has some noticeable flaws, but I don't think it's mediocre either. It looks fun, and if I play it I'm sure I'll have fun.
i'm a HUGE metroid fan and loved prime and super and i have to say this isn't that bad, its better than fusion and prime 2 just not as good as prime 1 ,3 or super.

I need to know. I NEED... to know... just, why, why Adam wouldn't let samus activate her varia function of the suit... when she was BURNING TO DEATH. He doesn't let her use it until that freakin boss. And it's not like that's a weapon. Samus should have just activated it on her own, not waited for authorization. That's a pretty major plothole. And the reason people hate this game so much? They don't want to see samus as a little bitch. A little bitch who happily burns to death for no reason.
Now I see why everyone hates this game. It is only because they cant comprehend the new samus and they couldent comprehend that she was way different then what everyone expected.
For a newcomer to the series I found the game play enjoyable, but I wouldn't recommend it to those who want a challenge over just having fun. From the videos I've seen of the fps metroid, they don't interest me as much since they seemed like strict walking around and shooting, but in this she is flipping around and using cool moves reminding me she is wearing a cool power suit (Which is what I enjoy more out of a game).
This was the only Metroid game I have ever played & had interest to play, & I by far have to say this game does not suck, it's an amazing game. As my research shows, Samus was always the quiet character with no personality, at all. So the game sucks & so does her character because they decided to give her personality? Bullshit! Sure I can see why fans would get pissed off, but that doesn't make the game any less amazing. She is still the strong, independent bounty hunter she always was.
Wow, I love how people criticize this game for its story all arround Samus. Lets not forget how Nintendo mentioned all the way back on E3 2009 how the game will focuse "deeper into Samus´ past". And then when the game got released, everyone said it sucked because...... it focuses on Samus´ past. What the hell are you people, some radio active assholes? Other than the great story, this game brought us what all recent games lacked:

@superhuman295 I haven't played the game but from what I've seen she walks perfectly normally. And I think all that stuff about boob and crouch shots is just peoples dirty minds in action. In the opening scene were Samus' suits grows around her, it zooms into the center of her chest as her suit unravels. I've seen the same with loads of male heros, but when it's a woman everyone is like "ooh! That's sexist!". They an't objectifying her, they treat her just like any other hero. :)

Blah. So much wasted potential. The gameplay is okay.... but not as good as Prime. The narration is cheesier than a daytime tv drama and is almost painful to watch. If humanizing Samus was the goal, all it's made me want to do is slap the writers for making her an angst ridden whiny teenager. I'm supposed to believe she gives up her special abilities to impress her former commander? Daddy issues much? Where is the badass, independent minded, skull crushing Samus?

I think Other M does retain the outside personality of Samus it's just lost with the inner narrative. Samus still remains silent for most of the adventure and does not integrate with the other army members much. She still displays her ability to dominate pretty much any opponent she comes in contact with. It's just that she has more inner monologue heard in this game that is to be expected from a character who has gone through so much

This game is good but it could be better:
-Less cheesy dialogue
-Better voice acting
-Control Stick>D-Pad in 3D games
-More exploration
-Better music (not that Other M's was bad but it didn't give a Metroid feel)
That said I would like a game that follows up this gameplay style. It is a step in the right direction, side-scrolling and first person are already done so they need to try something fresh.

Other M is what every classic Metroid game fans have always wanted. I'm surprised with the amount of people who bash this game because it is different from the Metroid Prime series. This game retains the fast gameplay and all the classic aspects at their best, expressed in a 3D environment and still try to please the fans of the Prime series by keeping a bit of the first person gameplay. If you prefer Prime it's ok, but Other M is the closest approach to an ideal 3D Metroid in terms of Gameplay!

Because of that, they bash on it more than necessary, but to me, personally seemed like a legitamite attempt. Even though many people think that she's only meant to be a badass.

To be quite honest, the engine is there, the premise is there, but the level design is too linear, and the guy in charge of the story wanted to flesh out Samus's character without even glancing at her characterization in the previous games.

It's mediocre at best, but when taken in context of Super Metroid or the masterpiece Metroid Prime trilogy, this game deserves a funeral in my toilet, along with other suitable toilet fare.
The atmosphere is awesome. The graphics are decent. The gameplay is alright. The story is absolute trash. The treatment of Samus is heretical. Samus' voice actress is even worse. Cons outweigh Pros.

I can still appreciate this game because the developers are thinking a different approach here. They want something different as you see from the interviews. You're pressing 1 to jump and 2 to shoot. You can go into first person and Morph Ball. You can't do 35-200 hit combos with a melee weapon. So Samus wall Jumps in a similar fashion to Ryu. Does that mean Super Metroid plays like ninja Gaiden on the Master System, then? No!

I really don't get the idiots who bash Team Ninja for this game's story (which is actually okay; not excellent nor horrible) and say that this game plays like Ninja Gaiden. First of all, Team Ninja was only in charge of GAMEPLAY/DESIGN AND GRAPHICS. NINTENDO DID THE STORY.
And, this game plays N O T H I N G like Ninja Gaiden. You're not inputting XY XXXY to do an Izuna Drop, sucking up your enemy's essence for a super attack, or healing yourself with potions.

I don't want to spoil the end but c'mon, they couldn't to anything else than what they've done. This game isn't bad at all but the story isn't Metroid like either, if this was just another NEW IP game, with different characters, this could have spawned a really cool franchise. Let's hope RETRO takes back what they've revolutionize and let's hope they make a DK 3D too!

This game was really quite incredible to play, but they could have found ANYONE to voice samus and it would have been better than this. She has no emotions at all in her delivery even in dramatic scenes. The game is great, but I find it ironic that the worst part of a Metroid game is Samus herself

I notice that mainstream game critics always complain about how games aren't trying anything new and then when a game DOES try something new, they don't like it. I'm sure that Other M has some noticeable flaws, but I don't think it's mediocre either. It looks fun, and if I play it I'm sure I'll have fun.

I need to know. I NEED... to know... just, why, why Adam wouldn't let samus activate her varia function of the suit... when she was BURNING TO DEATH. He doesn't let her use it until that freakin boss. And it's not like that's a weapon. Samus should have just activated it on her own, not waited for authorization. That's a pretty major plothole. For a newcomer to the series I found the game play enjoyable, but I wouldn't recommend it to those who want a challenge over just having fun. From the videos I've seen of the fps metroid, they don't interest me as much since they seemed like strict walking around and shooting, but in this she is flipping around and using cool moves reminding me she is wearing a cool power suit (Which is what I enjoy more out of a game).

This was the only Metroid game I have ever played & had interest to play, & I by far have to say this game does not suck, it's an amazing game. As my research shows, Samus was always the quiet character with no personality, at all. So the game sucks & so does her character because they decided to give her personality? Bullshit! Sure I can see why fans would get pissed off, but that doesn't make the game any less amazing. She is still the strong, independent bounty hunter she always was.

Wow, I love how people criticize this game for its story all arround Samus. Lets not forget how Nintendo mentioned all the way back on E3 2009 how the game will focuse "deeper into Samus´ past". And then when the game got released, everyone said it sucked because...... it focuses on Samus´ past. What the hell are you people, some radio active assholes? Other than the great story, this game brought us what all recent games lacked:
