I like this versh better than Wire's. They make Wire sound like Ride! I'm sorry to all the Wire and Ride fans, as I am one of both, and 154 is definitely ace, as is Going Blank Again, but I prefer My Bloody Valentine easily.
Heard this when it came out on KXLU, in Los Angeles. Bought it on the trib comp (which has got some good ones on it.) Big time favorite. Thanks for posting!!!!
The rare cover that improves upon the original. Though Wire has them beat as far as pure inventiveness (MBV is basically a great pop group with a few neat production tricks) but Butcher/Shields have vocals better suited to this than Newman's, shall we say, whine. Of course, that whine pushes a number of Wire songs into the greatness category. Great bands both
@TallFastLoud That production tricks thing about mbv is just a myth because when they came out no one knew how the fuck they were getting those sounds. So everyone said "well it must all be tricks in the the studio!" because they couldn't wrap their heads around it.
I totally thought my CD was warped, also-- they gave me another copy at Virgin Megastorez that sounded the same, so I shut up and just listened (for the past 20-odd years).., their unique sound slowly grows on you =)
@rifkijohngm check out Loveless. In top 5 albums of the 90s (pitchfork put it at #1 for a while... then a dispite ensued... or was it trouser press... vs OK computer)
@Boudosaved Ha! Me, too! First time I heard Loveless (via *cough* Napster *cough*), I thought I had gotten a bad rip from a warbling cassette. Only then I bought the CD, and it was the same. :) Nevertheless, it turned out to become one of my two favorite albums of all time (Pet Sounds being the other). Now, this cover is signature MBV, but I'm not sold on it. It's a bit too emotionally detached and even throughout. I prefer Wire's version which has a bit more character and heart in it.
@enossified yeah, the vowel-y wobbling sound on one of the guitars is the meatball. you can see his settings for it on those pics of his current live setup, his pedal has the markings on it.
I like this version better than the original. His voice sounds more friendly and makes me feel safe. He doesn't make me feel threatened or violated like Colin Newman does.
i wish i could take credit for it, but it's not my cover, it's done by the band My Bloody Valentine. it's relatively hard to find song so i just uploaded it here.
MBV never released this on an album, it was recorded after Loveless, but you can find the track on "Whore: A Tribute to Wire", which is a compilation of a load of bands covering Wire songs :)
love

Interesting cover , loses some of the subtlety of the original though.
That 'meatball' setting reminds me of my cheap little distortion pedal, set to crude maximum overdrive.

I'd always hoped someone would cover this. Not too impressed with the wall of guitar and ultra extruded vocals.

Love it! Excuse my ignorance, but what's the Meatball treating? The guitars?

Well done, though I prefer the original. This one's a bit too monochromatic.
ALL THE SAME, THANKS FOR POSTING!

@ingotglyph It came out in 1996 on Whore: A Tribute to Wire. This is one of the best cover songs ever, just as excellent as the original.
