joseph smith was NOT a martyr. The definition of martyrdom is a person who WILLINGLY gives their life for their religious, philosophic, or political beliefs. When you kill two people and wound a third trying to keep them from killing you thats not willingness. This is information that the leaders of the mormons know. the tour guides of carthage jail know this info and are told not to tell people this story but a romanticized version of the story.

I base my conclusion--that Joseph did not kill anyone--onthe lack of "proof" that any of the men shot by Joseph died from those wounds. After being named in the indictment, all 3 men left the area. Before they ran, 2 of them were "rewarded" for their participation in the murders of Joseph & Hyrum.

Upon the murder of Hyrum, Joseph drew the pepperbox & snapped all six shots, but only 3 discharged, hitting Wills, Voras, & Gallaher. Also, a Mr Allen & a Mr Townsend were wounded by "friendly fire," not by Joseph. Townsend was the one who later died from his wound. Allen, Wills, Voras, & Gallaher were later named in an indictment for their part in the murders.

No evidence that anyone hit by Joseph, died from their wounds.

No hoax in the History of the Church. The exact quote that John Taylor wrote is: "I afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, two of whom, I am informed, died." Taylor reported what he had been told.

It was later determined that the 3 men were alive & well at the trial held for mob leaders, & were indentified by witnesses as being part of the mob. They were named in the indictment, but fled the county & were never brought to trial....cont..

@GaryKColeman Notice there is a contrastive "BUT" in the verse. He is contrasting what is necessary for salvation: BUT he that does not BELIEVE will be damned. It leaves out baptism. Baptism is a covenantal oath ceremony showing that you are IN the covenant and is an EVIDENCE that you are justified (already). It is not FOR justification, but the evidence that you already are justified. Learn covenant theology and what a covenant is, Joseph Smith definitely didn't know what a covenant was.
