@HoltCalifornia Those are huge freeways as well and I looked at them on google earth. You are exaggerating a bit on the number of lanes LOL. Lanes at an exit don't count and frontage roads don't count.
The highway system in Atlanta, GA. is like an insect! Think about it. I-285 resembles the overall outline and the crisscrossing I-20, I-75, and !-85 resemble the six legs.
Holy Shit I had No Idea that Downtown Atlanta I-75 is as congested as freeways in the Los Angeles Area. I'm From the San Francisco Area and were told that LA has the worse freeways in the nation but now I see that Atlanta and Houston are catching up with LA with worse freeway congestion in the nation.
I looked at the 401 on google earth. That baby is Huge!!!! Having the 2 sets of lanes in each direction (assuming the left most lanes are for further travel) is a very good concept. They use that concept on Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway.
when are we going to realize that keeping the environment clean from pollution is much more important than the comfort of having a private vehicle per person...
I feel the same way. I am all for public transit. Only problem is any cities that had a million or less people don't want to have a good public transit system. I live near Nashville, TN and the bus system here is very poor and forces me to drive a car everywhere. I wish they would at least hurry up with electric cars. I think that the oil industry is doing what they can to keep people in cars.
Our transportation system (MARTA) sucks. The only jurisdications whose taxes go to fund it are DeKalb and Fulton counties; however, more than those two jurisdictions use it. I used ride MARTA for awhile, but it caused me to be late for my classes. When that happened, I started driving to school (Georgia State) everyday.
Pshh, Small Freeway, I-10 in Houston = 28 lanes, I-5 in La Jolla = 24 lanes, I-5 in Irvine = 21 lanes.

@murfreebear I did not exaggerate, Frontage Roads technically count as a lane.

This is almost as bad as 401 in Toronto.
Imperial0666 3 years ago
the maximum width of 401 has a 5-4-4-5 lane configuration.

Yeah, too many lanes. Too many exit-only lanes, especially at the Connector southbound at I-20 & Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Mayhem!

Huh? Atlanta has 5 million people, that's more than enough for an extensive transit system!
