I have a Homelite Pro 46cc. I have been using it for 2 years for cutting firewood to heat my home. It performs great but I have noticed a loss of power at over 9000' of elevation. It has been reliable and performs better than my 20 year old Homelite Super 2. Well balanced and takes 2 seconds to adjust the chain. I run it to death and I have had no problems. My friend purchased a Stihl at the same time as me, It has been back to the shop twice with carb and clutch problems.
why dont you put a old school homelite thats around 64cc up against that stihl. i still use a homelite c71 everyday that saw out beats any new stihl / husky within the same cc range any day. stihls and huskys are overrated.
My dad sold Homelites in the 60's, 70's, & 80's. I'm in the process of restoring 8 now. 2 super ez's, 3 super XL's,330,340, and a xl 12. These saws were made in Charlotte NC when Homelite was owned by Textron. They are very well made. Those old Homelites are powerful saws. The new ones are made in China and are value priced. In 1985 a super ez list for $350. That new 45 cc saw retails for around $150. That should put things in perspective.
this contest is unfair, if u realy want to mesure it, then sharp both chains, clean the chainsaw and for god sake the 64cc chain needs some adjustments, its way too loose

neither saw is cutting correctly-I could have read war and peace by the time he got threw these logs.Take the rakes off, sharpen the chains correctly, and I would guess the stihl takes about 1o seconds on the big piece and the homolite about 20.
I used to have a 38cc husqvarna that would've greatly shamed either of those saws. I have always hand-sharpened my own chains, and self-tuned. Even when it was dull, it would've cut quicker. (it calimed it had air-injection, to me it was just a hyperactive twostroke) I wish I still had that saw. :(

they are both dull as hell man - you are obviously sharpening the chains incorrectly on both, you need a new chain for the stihl, your bar rails are probably clogged with shit and getting no oil to chain as well, your chain is sagged like hell on the stihl from getting hot as hell cutting with no oil and a dull chain.. please learn how to use these things before you hurt yourself
they are both dull as hell man - you are obviously sharpening the chains incorrectly on both, you need a new chain for the stihl, your bar rails are probably clogged with shit and getting no oil to chain as well
Dosent look to me like you knocked down the rakers. As your cutting teeth get shorter they also shrink in height, so unless your file down the rakers your teeth arent cutting as much, It makes a HUGE difference. But small rakers= higher kickback
Very bad habit, cutting with a dull chain. Puts a lot of mechanical and thermal stress on chain, bar, sprocket, engine. Not to mention, it's very dangerous- snags & kicks.
Simple rule: unless it's generating big chips, stop & sharpen it. Repeat until it does. Do not torture machinery.
@jonesbrent85 just checking i don't use any chain saws but a friend was telling me a lot of the new ones are 4t and not 2t and so are the weed eaters and i was wondering how well they work
i ride motocross and ride a 2t and in my world there is all ways a huge debate about witch is better
and for a chain saw i just don't see how a 4t would work worth a poop at all
maybe i'm wrong but unless he's cutting granite...... i think the main problem is that none of the chains are very sharp regardless of make..... it would kill ya to cut a pickup load of wood at that rate.
Okay, after looking closer at the chains....that's a full chisel on the Homelite (I believe) and a skip chain on the Stihl. Not a fair comparison at all. Skip chains cut much faster and I don't think that the Homelite would have enough power to run a skip chain. Also I got ahead of myself on the previous post, I mean file the rakers using a depth gauge.
It looks like the Homelite is running a full chisel chain while the Stihl is running a semi chisel, but I'm not absolutely certain based on the camera movement in the beginning. When I sharpen my saw, I don't get the fine dust in the second vid, that you're getting with the Homelite, which means either you didn't sharpen it right or the depth gauges need to be filed down a tad. Either way, with a SHARP chain, the 46cc running a full chisel chain should beat the dull 64cc saw everytime.
ha, finally someone who knows something about chainsaws is on youtube...your exactly right about the chain and even the size of the chain. This test isn't accurate at all!!!!!!
I think both saws need to be sharpened correctly. The output of both is dusty, not chippy as it should be. I work with various sizes of saws, and much smaller saws than either of those will cut better and faster than the saws in this video.
I would like to see this test done with a husky vs stihl same cc and fresh factory chains, make it Oregon chipper type of chains. Would really like it to be done with pro grade saws 33 bar or bigger! I'am a fan of husky (Italy vs German made saws)
Haha. Small homelite vs. big Stihl , gee, I wonder which saw wins? Also, way to jam the throttle on the homelite. Just tell me, what is this supposed to prove?
I got an old homelite 360 that i bought off craigslist, still trying to get it to work, i want to do a vid like this with it against a stihl when i get the homelite working, would have like to see saws that are identical like cc and bar size, still a good vid tho
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that a 46 cc is not going to compare to a 64 regardless. of brand. Also information is missing; Chain pitch, chain make (relating to Quality of chain (a factory chain on that homelite will not compare to many other made to order chains)), is it chipper chains or full chisel? Just throwing 2 machines next to each other and calling it a comparison does not hold much water. You have to compare apples to apples.
@jrstrines from what i can see, hes trying to compare just stock from the factory chainsaws. i believe that the point was more to show what you get when you spend your money the first time, not what you can do to make it better. not trying to argue, just an opinion.
@fenderman615 From what I can see this Stihl is not new out of the box. The 039 came with 3 different chain setups...and again it is not listed here with pitch chain is being used. Again we have no information on chain type either. The homelite is using a semichisel full comp chain while it appears that the stihl is using a full skip chain which is much faster in cutting in my own experience with both types. As for "out of the box" stihl saws do NOT come "out of the box" with skip chains..
@jrstrines okay okay. i apologize if i offended you friend. that was not my intention. i dont study chainsaws very much if at all, i just wanted to see if maybe you had overlooked the main purpose of the video. again, if i offended you, i am sorry i had no intention. thank you for informing me too. it was helpful =]
Considering we have NO idea how much work the chain on the Sthill had really done and the fact that we really can't see if the Homelite had been sharpened properly. Coupled with the fact that you used a different cutting technique on the last two cuts I'd say you've proved NOTHING.
@suchfunstuff don't those chainsaws suck? I've never bought a chainsaw before, but I'm buying one for my dad and I've read bad reviews on them. So if that was a joke.. otherwise...what's recommended?
@KatotownUSA The Super XL was popular in the 70's and 80's, and were made when Homelite was a Textron company. You can't buy a new Homelite these days made like the older ones. Homelite is nothing like it once was. Stihl is a good saw. I have older (80's/ 90's) Stihls, except for our MS660. Has been great.
i do admit the new homelites suk but if u can use an oldr model there great we have a 240 n a cs 50 which we have no probs with but i also bought a ryobi which will put any stihl 2 shame n its been proven a 40cc saw to a 46cc stihl wht a shame to thm
Yeah the new homelite's are junk but an older one say from the 60's or 70's would blow your stihl right out of the water. I have a homelite super ez which would crush your more powerful stihl just to give you a little perspective. These people who say stihls are the best are morons, most of these same people haven't even tried the other saws and are talking purely based on ignorance. I repair chainsaws for a living and as such get to try out many different kinds.
i agree with this the new homelites r like those junk ass poulans big n impressine lookin but obviously never put to the test i will stay with the older homelites thts whn a saw was a saw
@sawman115 yeah right i knew some jackass would say that theres no way stihl can be outdone by homelite homelite just never was built for performance and speed
Several problems with this test. Both sawz should be running the same brand and type of same safety chain and be new out of box chain. Also the Homelite is out of carb adjustment .The Homelite is not reaching full power. The test only shows a difference between a dull saw and a sharp saw and nothing else. Yes the Stihl is a better name brand but is not superior to any other. Saw are made by different company's and some people like one brand verses another.
Most Stihl saws are slow RPM thats why the last longer ,but their a lot slower cutting. Saws come in all different rpm modes but the Echo is by far the fastest cutting, they just dont last as long and you wind up throwing them away when they wear out, but you have cut twice as much in half the time. They dont make any bad chain saws nowadays, you just have to pick the one that works for you.Unless your my son who doesnt ever want to see another one again.
i personally think that the chain on the homelite is not sharp at all. its throwing a hell of a lot of dust. to me a dull chain is a new chain. and plus i dont think that your saws are oiling properly. i saw this b/c there is a lot of burn marks on your teeth
well obviously u dnt knw wht the fuck a real saw is ive always had a homelite had the same one 4 10 yrs and every guy i knw tht owns a stihl is buyn a new one evry yrs pretty good 4 a saw i picked up off the street!! so ha ha n if u dnt like it bring it on sukr
@JRFFRB i know right i have the same homelite and i dont have dust and my chain only has oil and wood chips on it he needs better oil or oiller my homelite whould kick both them saws asses..
this is for the people that want to argue which is the better brand stihl or husky....it's just a matter of personal opinion....I like them both just the same.
Come on, my little MS270 would have cut through that in half the time. I think to many people forget what a sharp (sharp!) chain should cut like. They somehow get used to dull chains without realizing it. If the chain was good and properly sharpened there would be no veriation in rpms (OK barely). But not really unless your pushing down on or twisting the saw during the cut. It actually sounded like one side of the chain is a little sharper than the other causing the bar to bind.
Working at a sawmill, I've used and worn out many saws. My previous saw was a 385XP Husky, It was a very good saw. Lots of power, I got 4 years out of it. Currently I am running an MS650 Stihl, I am on year 6. The Husky was Stronger, but the Stihl lasts longer! It's a trade off. If I was still limbing and bucking, I would run both. Prolly a 362 husky for limbing but I would run a 650 stihl for the big cuts. In Truth, unless you are in the woods all day every day Either brand would be fine!
i'd rather use a stihl than anything else, except for logging up, then it's husky all the way, although i can't quite choose between the 2 when i get up into the 42" bar range (and that's a shorter bar than the standard), need to choose soon though, got a 55" oak to take down
i think when the person said homelite was the best i would sure hope he was talking about the older saws not the new saws.the new homelites just like the new mccullochs SUCK. the old saws from both companys were beast at one time.
first of all if you knew how to use the saw then you could do something like this the homlite sucks bro both saws are dull as hell and you are just a harry homeowner thinking he knows everything and i own my own tree company bro so i know what im talking about you suck
i am a veteran 30 year wood sawyer homelite has always bee notorious for having low rpms but they were always dependable and rugged i started my career using a homelite 55 and a homelite 66 with a 6 foot two man bar and chain we used them to flush cut monster live oak stumps you could almost count the rpms but boy they would cut all day long!
Oh my....powder.... Buy a husky!! If you file your own saws buddy go to a shop and pay them to teach you how to sharpen. Im not being rude, but seriously have them teach you. If you buy supplies at a local chain saw store they will teach you, trust me. Your saw should cut and pull in the wood by its self. Your killing your bar using a poor chain or poorly sharpened chain. If the bottoms of your bars are black metal you need help my friend.
You are quite "INCORRECT" at 38 seconds you can see the Stihl skip tooth and at 46 sec you can see the standard chain on the homelite. The bar size is not the issue the amount of teeth in the wood at any given moment is what matters. Small saws as these two are would benefit since the saw will not slow and bog down.
there both really good saws i like homelites the best personally, but i dont think that homelite chains is very sharp its throwing dust not not shreds and i know the differents
2-a chainsaw will not cease up unless you are shoving down HARD on it .your only suposed to let it go with the wait of the saw. and finally 3-you dont have the slightest clue about sharpening if you just sharpend that the asw dust would be chunks not actual fucking dust
Good video but I would like to see equal cc. The best test would be a torture all day test. I doubt the Homelite would make it through the day without blowing the cylinder.
stihl is the best brand of power tools by far. we use all stihl in my families landscaping buisness. i personally own a stihl MS880 with a 36 inch guide bar. good products.
Even a stihl with a new chain will beat a Husky with a dull chain... Now both with new chain and the Husky will kill that stihl. stihl-dead

STIHL's are the BEST.
ppappixx 2 years ago
Several problems with this test. Both sawz should be running the same brand and type of same safety chain and be new out of box chain. Also the Homelite is out of carb adjustment .The Homelite is not reaching full power. The test only shows a difference between a dull saw and a sharp saw and nothing else. Yes the Stihl is a better name brand but is not superior to any other. Saw are made by different company's and some people like one brand verses another.

Yes Dolmar, Husky, and pro Stihl's are all good saws. New homelite's are Chinese made pieces of junk.

dolmar!
wadepatton 2 years ago
Most Stihl saws are slow RPM thats why the last longer ,but their a lot slower cutting. Saws come in all different rpm modes but the Echo is by far the fastest cutting, they just dont last as long and you wind up throwing them away when they wear out, but you have cut twice as much in half the time. They dont make any bad chain saws nowadays, you just have to pick the one that works for you.Unless your my son who doesnt ever want to see another one again.
215jami 2 years ago
if you like more rpm on a stihl yuo just have to fill more oil into the fuel, and turn the rpm up.
tscho88 2 years ago
come on get real a homelite will always smoke a stihl
aworthington4966 2 years ago
i personally think that the chain on the homelite is not sharp at all. its throwing a hell of a lot of dust. to me a dull chain is a new chain. and plus i dont think that your saws are oiling properly. i saw this b/c there is a lot of burn marks on your teeth
JRFFRB 2 years ago 9
I thnk the homelite chain is dull too i own a homelite cs50 and it smokes every still ive seen even with a dull chain
aworthington4966 2 years ago
bahahahahahaha your joking right homelite is cheap crap you cant even compare it to a stihl

No offense bro but why do you even have a Homelite chainsaw?

this is for the people that want to argue which is the better brand stihl or husky....it's just a matter of personal opinion....I like them both just the same.

My husky would put both to shame.

Lots of dust and little chips = dull chain

(Continued) Perhaps you came to close to the splitter more than once.
Better LOL
441MPYSstihl 2 years ago
Come on, my little MS270 would have cut through that in half the time. I think to many people forget what a sharp (sharp!) chain should cut like. They somehow get used to dull chains without realizing it. If the chain was good and properly sharpened there would be no veriation in rpms (OK barely). But not really unless your pushing down on or twisting the saw during the cut. It actually sounded like one side of the chain is a little sharper than the other causing the bar to bind.
441MPYSstihl 2 years ago
do the same test again with both saws running the same model chain and bar. you'd be amazed.

snyllermand 2 years ago
Working at a sawmill, I've used and worn out many saws. My previous saw was a 385XP Husky, It was a very good saw. Lots of power, I got 4 years out of it. Currently I am running an MS650 Stihl, I am on year 6. The Husky was Stronger, but the Stihl lasts longer! It's a trade off. If I was still limbing and bucking, I would run both. Prolly a 362 husky for limbing but I would run a 650 stihl for the big cuts. In Truth, unless you are in the woods all day every day Either brand would be fine!
CaptSyBerianHusky 2 years ago
I got a $300 Stihl cause I only cut now n' then but I wish I'd got a bigger one.
transdrole 2 years ago
dude that chain on the stihl is junked!
transdrole 2 years ago
you need to tighten the chain on your stihl thats a good way to take off some skin. myself im all for husqavarna.
fireh1 2 years ago
Its not fair when the operator isn't consistant and bogs down the saw.
But yes Homlite sucks compared to Stihl anyway.
theronwinsby 2 years ago
i'd rather use a stihl than anything else, except for logging up, then it's husky all the way, although i can't quite choose between the 2 when i get up into the 42" bar range (and that's a shorter bar than the standard), need to choose soon though, got a 55" oak to take down
qwerty23967 2 years ago
I think I would rather use a dull stihl then a sharp junk homelite!
what a piece!
bigfela69 2 years ago
i think when the person said homelite was the best i would sure hope he was talking about the older saws not the new saws.the new homelites just like the new mccullochs SUCK. the old saws from both companys were beast at one time.

Stihl rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TylerTylerFrankFrank 2 years ago
Maybe against the smaller homo but put that stihl against a husky or jonny nearly the exact size and see then.
rider660r 2 years ago
i am a veteran 30 year wood sawyer homelite has always bee notorious for having low rpms but they were always dependable and rugged i started my career using a homelite 55 and a homelite 66 with a 6 foot two man bar and chain we used them to flush cut monster live oak stumps you could almost count the rpms but boy they would cut all day long!
dragonflychainsaw 2 years ago 2
Oh my....powder.... Buy a husky!! If you file your own saws buddy go to a shop and pay them to teach you how to sharpen. Im not being rude, but seriously have them teach you. If you buy supplies at a local chain saw store they will teach you, trust me. Your saw should cut and pull in the wood by its self. Your killing your bar using a poor chain or poorly sharpened chain. If the bottoms of your bars are black metal you need help my friend.
Feckedup 2 years ago
Another big advantage the Stihl has a skip tooth chain, a huge advantage.
dogmanjoee 2 years ago
no it had a regular chain and they if it did have a skip chain it wouldnt benifit anything under 24'' and the skip chain does poor indryed wood
kalob35 2 years ago
You are quite "INCORRECT" at 38 seconds you can see the Stihl skip tooth and at 46 sec you can see the standard chain on the homelite. The bar size is not the issue the amount of teeth in the wood at any given moment is what matters. Small saws as these two are would benefit since the saw will not slow and bog down.
dogmanjoee 2 years ago
useless ignorance.
o56kid 2 years ago
I have both saws in my truck both saws are good but you can buy the homelite for 125 bucks new and the stihl will run around 600
maxaintright 2 years ago
there both really good saws i like homelites the best personally, but i dont think that homelite chains is very sharp its throwing dust not not shreds and i know the differents
mortie806 2 years ago
1-the both blunt as shit
2-a chainsaw will not cease up unless you are shoving down HARD on it .your only suposed to let it go with the wait of the saw. and finally 3-you dont have the slightest clue about sharpening if you just sharpend that the asw dust would be chunks not actual fucking dust
SkidooDemon 2 years ago
Good video but I would like to see equal cc. The best test would be a torture all day test. I doubt the Homelite would make it through the day without blowing the cylinder.
commhealy 2 years ago
I am surprised the Homelite didn't cease up.
commhealy 2 years ago
the results of that test where the complete oposite to what i predicted my money would allways be on the sharper saw oops lol

tell me man does ur ms 390 with a new chain cut fast?
kalob35 2 years ago
A 64cc any brand is going to beat a 46cc any brand. the 64cc is a much larger engine. Both of these saws cut like the guide is to high on the chain.
Get exactly the same size engines with two new exactly the same chains and you'll have a real test.
