great vid bro. So are there more than just 4 spots available to record in? I keep hearing that with the xs8 which is what i wanna get you can only record four different instruments.. I'd like to record way more than that if i can. Are there ways to do it with the software for computer or what? Thanks!
great video but i having a problem when i go through all the steps when i reach to the record part where there trigger level is and i start to record when i finish and go to audition all i get is a loud irritating sound when you go so loud like my speakers is going to burn my high range and the guitar is very low could you help me with this, is there a special cable that you used?
Excellent vid, - why Yamaha couldn't have explained it this clearly in the user manual I don't know. Now I just need a tutorial like this on sample slicing and time stretching to match different tempos
I've been trying for many times to do the same but instead an Elec. Guitar, I use a microphone (AUDIO IN). I can record my voice in one of the tracks of the songs, but when I finish singing and go back the SONG, it never appears the track in Blue color (indicating this is a sampled track..
Am I missing something?
Do I need to SLICE after recording ???
You have your sampling directly in track 5....If you press play button....would it sound together with the rest of tracks
Thank you so much for putting this on. I just bought a Motif XS6, and need to record some small audio samples to be able to cue up live for songs. Is it pretty much the same application as here? Thanks
Also after reading the manual, looks like I gotta buy 2 identical DIMM modules to save samples.
Hi cmorganis! I bougth a Motif XS this week, and I edited a voice, but when I save the new voice i don´t know how to change the name. Do you know how to change the name of the voices? Thank you! =)
Hello... I have a question for you... Tell me, can I record drums, or anything from my PC and put that in Performance mode (as Sample) and trigger it to play on key? Somethin like... I play Piano on keyboard, but when I hit C5 key it starts to play some strings or anything I have imported from my PC???
And if I can, can I put more then 4 different samples in Performance mode?
1. I have a pre-recorded drum track (or any sound) playing in song mode and I want to apply a filter sweep to part of the track using one of the knobs whilst in over/record mode. Will the sequencer record the filter sweep or do I have to sample it as a sample track?
2. The vocoder, say I have a pre-recorded bass track playing and record a vocoder vocal to the sequencer as a seperate audio track, can it do that and save it, then play it back on a separate track without the bass?
First of all let me say thank you for taking the time and effort to upload such 'easy to follow' guides for the Yamaha Motif XS - great job! OK, I'm upgrading from the SY-85 and I just wanted to know the following before I take the plunge:
Cyavash, you need to be in the mode you wish to work in when you configure the in/out and apply efects. For exanple, if you wish to record your audio source to a track in a song you are working on, open your song while in song mode, and use the "mix" button to open the interface that alows you to navigate to your in/out ans efect settings. Now when you store, you may exit back to your song and use the multisampler to record.
This video is amazing. Your teaching is easier then the manual or the book. I am going to watch all your videos so I can learn this amazing Work Station. I was wondering do you know how to assign the foot peddle to a bass drum sound? I am wanting to make the drum playing even better by using the peddle for the bass drum. Just wondering. I hope you don't mind me asking you questions. I hope you have a great Tuesday. God bless you and your family.
'work into' is not the correct phrasing I think you mean if it has possible midi and audio connections and the asnwer is yes. All modern workstations can be used in a any DAW or software. THe difference is that some have extra capabilities which are almost always not important. For example motif XS workstations are designed to take advantage of unique features through Steinberg's Cubase -Steinberg and Yamaha are the same company now since Yamaha bought Steinberg from the Germans-
2. I use Cubase and record the song playback and then export as mp3
3. They will sound the same as long as you record in audio or as midi but use the motif XS as the controller when exporting. (the second can be complicated i always do audio)
Hi, I set up the input just like you showed, in the voice mode, but when i try to record using the integrated sampling in song mod, the configuration is gone and all i can record is a dry mono signal on one side, what am i doing wrong/not doing please?
you must set-up your audio output, Once in song or pattern mode go to 'Mix'. Select 'audio' then 'Effect' from there 'Audio in' from then on it's selfexplainable. If you have any issues let me know.
Hey, I am experiencing the same problem. Even when I set-up my audio output it doesn't. As soon as I exit the Voice mode, all the effects somehow disappear!! Did you figure out how to fix this?
I have a project in a pattern mode, I want to record it to my computer and convert it to mp3 format, can you make a video tutorial to explain that? I have a Motif xs7, Thanks a lot, man
Firstly, have u connected your guitar to the processor and then put it in the motif or is it directly from guitar output on the guitar itself to keyboard??
And secondly, the guitar sound comes out from the speakers to which the motif xs is attached??
Pls reply to this because i have a motif xs 6 and i too would like to do this!
lol no offense taken, just kinda funky to spend time talking about the plastic instead of the XS, but I've left the plastic on cause dust gets stuck around the screen and its a pain in the ass to clean
Thanks for this, easy to understand and to the point. I got an Motif XS7,had it for a couple of months and I am new to this type of workstations, with that said I just want to add that video tutorials like this are very much appreciated.

Can this be done on a Motif ES? I went to utility and I don't see the two effects inerts you have here on your XS...great tutorial btw! cheers
kornypony 2 years ago
never owned an ES...sorry! But I am assuming you can because the ES is similar to the XS in its audio inputs/connections.

you can do that in perfomance mode yes. more than four different samples no.
cmorganis 1 year ago
but you can always export 4 perfomances to a pattern or song (4x4 = 16 channels)

Great tutorials, but I would like to ask a few questions if I may for clarification.
1. For the crossover cable, does it need a special port on my PC or will a normal ethernet port work?
2. How do I save a song I've made on my Motif to my computer as an mp3?
3. Will I need any special software to save the songs onto my computer and play them? Will they sound the same or will it be converted to midi data?
Thank you very much.

Guitar to pedal and then to Motif
Speakers from Motif
** You could connect guitar directly to XS and add overdrive from there

Was just wondering since I had never seen anyone put plastic on an LCD......... Apparently the OP is a little sensitive and took offense.
The bubbles were a little distracting..

the XS comes with the plastic cover on the screen, i've left it on
