@bala94ms Thank you for your reply. What is the normal pitch range for male carnatic vocalists? Do you know any singer who use B in the lower octave below C (1 kattai) as shruthi?
@uptothe the normal pitch for male carnatic vocalists generally ranges between C and C# while some also sing in D.There was one great Vocalist Sri MD Ramanathan who used to sing in 1/2 kattai..With unimaginable depth..In today's scenario to the best of my knowledge I dont think anybody sings in that range while there may be a few exceptions...May i know the reason for ur curiosity..?
@bala94ms HaHa offcourse. I am learning carnatic music and since my teacher is a female I had to use 5 kattai. Recently I realized that being a 22 year old man I should switch to male shruthi. She suggested C or C#. Some days I am able to practice in C and some days I have to go down to B to hit upper sthayi panchamam withouth straining. I have also read some where that swaram beyond uppersthayi rishabham must not be sung withouth softening/modulating your voice.
@bala94ms Hence I'm paying special attention to various male singers to see how they use uppersthayi swarams. Once again I really do appreciate your prompt replies. I was glad that I switched to male shruthi but now I have like thousand questions. lol
@uptothe Oh..ok.That is a problem everybody faces once our voice breaks..Even i used to sing in 5 kattai till my teens now i use 2..My guru tells me that reducing the shruthi isnt the deal because as we grow our voice will tend to loose the timber..So I recommend you to practise lot of Mantha sthayi and sing at a comfortable pitch that suits u as well as ur voice..Always remember the more you practise manthra sthayi..Your voice will opn out for the tara sthayis...Keep in touch...
