I think it's a bit deeper than that guys. (1) The little boy he takes the sword against, is the boy of the warrior he killed getting captured. When he doesn't put down the sword, it's his way of showing everyone who new the warrior killed, that he (Tom Cruise) had to be one tough person to beat, and that the warior that died fighting him was very brave to have fought him. (2) Remember the dreams he was having, killing defenseless Native Americans? This was a way to get his punishment.
Only japanese can pull off the "screaming" and making noices while swinging whit their swords, legs, arms or even jumping! :D When someone else does it, it looks embarrassing and kinda homo! :D
Im a little older than some if ppl here liked this movie and havent seen shogun i say go look it up and watch it this movie was awesome but it seems a lot of it came from shogun.
@yakuza488 or maybe it should be lack of understanding what the hell the other person is saying cause he doesnt speak japanese and so he just defends himself when he is attacked for no apparent reason
I think the reactions of the villagers watching this engagement say it all. They knew he was going to get his ass kicked right from the get go. Even Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), probably knew he was going to take a beating, but better to beaten like a dog, than treated like one.
Nathan even makes reference that the villagers look upon him like a dog, when he first arrived. After this, I would say not anymore.
I just realized, how is he supposed to know what the Samuria is saying?? He doesn't speak Japanese, Maybe he didn't know he wanted him to put down the sword, Maybe he thought the Samuria wanted to fight him
That's how Americans do it right there, y'all. NEVER give up. It doesn't matter what people think of you. You get smacked down, STAND back up. Get back on your feet and keep on truckin'! :D
Can anyone tell me how to get this hairstyle of Tom Cruise. I read online that i can get it by having a haircut that is tapered on the sides and is longer in the front to ensure that I can brush my hair back from my face to make it fuller. Please help me out guys, thanks!!
I really do not understand this scene probably cause i have never seen the film the whole way through would someone be so kind as to explain it to me ?
@exorbium the best explanation is recommendation is to watch the movie. it is about the one character mark that all warriors admire. that is courage and bravery. he is teh prisoner of the samurai and dares not to obey what the man said. and although he is send to ground he never gives up. that is why he is admired... check the movie called "Legionnaire" but mostly the ending, or braveheart's ending, or 300 ending
@limemintify Dude i'm scottish i've seen braveheart almost 1000 time in like the last 8 months, i've also seen 300 a fair emount of times and the way you explained doesnt make me need to watch the film so Thanks =]
@limemintify Right yeah i asked for an explanation to help me better understand this scene and that is exactly what you done... and so i thanked you for it
First we have a structured, disciplined culture in the Japanese. Second a open, take your fortune with your own hand with American. I wouldn't think of expressing which is the better. In Japan the inferior person would have simply bowed out. In America tenacity is rewarded. The two cultures once mixed will always produce friction. Neither is wrong, but in this case you see that determination is a powerful thing. Out matched severely Algren will never give in. A painful lessen to all watching...
I love this scene. Cruise's character is making a point, a very painful one but also a very powerful one. it's very obviously a test of heart. by the end, although he has taken a pounding, he has increased his honour by showing bravery & resolve. the samurai, by attacking an opponent unskilled with that weapon, and thus effectively defenceless, has diminished his honour.
It's a scene that succintly portrays how one should approach life.
@lefelinmalefique09 LOL, He doesn't say face, it's more like FASE, or fss, and it's Ujio who says that, It's the same as "Ki-Ya", as someone who has learned ninjitsu, it's a really common fighting-scream.( I should know XD)..
lmao i love this movie so much but i jsut noticed that at 2:00 when cruise get hit in the head he says face! lol well he doesnt but it sounds like it.

You can defeat the body not the spirit.
