Hey babe!! The irons are Golden Supreme and I love them. I've never used Kentucky maid but I know several stylists that have used them so they must be ok. I myself started off with Stella which is good for getting started or to have as a back up but not for long term. If you can invest, get golden or Kizure. I have several different irons in my collection (stella, golden, kizure, annie, ect.) all serve the purpose but my main use is golden.
Do you mean before adding the indents in the curl? If so YES! After you roller set and before you add the indents with the iron, you want to spray a light spritz and oil sheen to the hair. When I do my clients, I usually do it in sections covering about 2 or 3 rows of curls.
