It's not meant to be stealthy, it's a long range interdiction/strike "bomb truck", meaning that it carries a high payload over long distances. Plus, Soviet tactics favoured a swarm of decent aircraft instead of one very lethal one. So you're not really comparing like with like. And if plasma stealth works, it will be stealthy too.

Well as far as I know it works by causing a field of charged ions around the aircraft which absorbs radar waves, instead of relying on the shape or materials of the aircraft to do so. This means that the aircraft itself needn't be a stealth design, like the Nighthawk. So they're thinking of retro-fitting it onto earlier aircraft. It's still only early days yet though.

The F-117 is 1970s technology - it first flew in 1980. It's only stealthy from a narrow angle the front. Apparently there are attempts to detect stealthy aircraft using different methods but one can't judge their success against new tech just by their success against the f-117. BTW, the maths behind beam scattering stealth is Russian but was ignored. (I'm Zimbabwean so don't have a side!)
I'm not really that well informed on stealth technology, but I hear from Combat Aircraft Magazine that Sukhoi's starting a new 5th Generation fighter, the PAK-FA. Apparently it's using plasma stealth. The article also says that plasma stealth can be retrofitted to aircraft not built as stealth aircraft. Any info on that?
Using google, I have seen claims of 100X RCS reduction for plasma stealth but I don't think that this is very spectacular compared to the ratios scattering stealth originally managed.
There certainly has been talk about some kind of US active RAM panel/material that can help even non-stealthy shapes a lot and which makes internal weapons carriage less critical.

F117 is based on 1980's technology. Even latest T50 project is a direct copy of F22. Sukhoi must copy USA designed aircraft to build capable aircraft. Su 24 copied from F111, Su 27 copied from F15/18.

- the helmet mounted target designater

Sabre-rattling "America F**k Yeah!" type onesided comments are mainly bullshit. Russia had the technology down cold, but never quite had the cash to fulfil their projects to the fullest extent.
Exactly, Russian has some of the best military technology in the world. Just because it's not all stealth and long range missiles doesn't mean it's not advanced. There was a fighter exercise between F-15's and various Russian aircraft, including the old Mig-21's. The Russian's won 90% of the dogfights.
look at the timing of the exersise. us airforce was in front of congress trying to get funding for the raptor. in the real world how many f15s have been shot down? in exercises a single f22 has taken on 4 f15's and won. the migs are more manouverable at low speed but at the speeds over 450 knots the raptor becomes more manuverable. the sukhoi is an awesome aircraft though and anyone saying otherwise is a complete idiot.
Actually the F-22 had already been chosen for production a few years before the exercise. And as for how many F-15's would have really been shot down, most of the Russian aircraft in the exercise were excellent at what they were designed to do, which was to defeat American made aircraft. Also, look at the numbers. For the cost of 1 F-22, you could get about 3 or 4 Sukhoi or MiG fighters. When looking over a wide range of factors, the Sukhoi and MiG's are just better choices.
so we can go by exersises, ok i go along with that. the british joust program is amazingly acurate at deciding winners in this arena. the kill ratio is 10 - 1 for the raptor over the current russian aircraft. also at the time even though the f22 had been chosen there were concerns over the cost, and discusians of just upgrading the F15. also the only two areas where the russian aircraft faired better. cost and air to ground.
just to clarify I am NOT putting down the russian aircraft, but untill they go towards the stealth aspect they will loose to the f22. history has shown us one thing, russia will eventualy build a better fighter. it wont be one based on a 30 year old platform but they will build a better fighter. and then the USA will build a better one and then china and so on. the debate here however is what is the better fighter. the f22 at this time will win in an air to air engagement.
Well, I do believe that the F-22 would win in a long range engagement, the Russian craft would most likely win in a dogfight. So it really comes down to which battle is fought.
if the rusian aircraft could bring the engagement speed to below 400 knots. anything above that and the f22 is the more agile of the two craft. think about the superchipmunk, probably the most agile aircraft ever built, but it can only do its manouvers in the 120knot range and below. so the suykhoi has to not only get into dog fight range but also bring the f22 to the lower speed. this is why the t50 will be built.
man, do you know that F117 was shot down by russian SAM system NEVA, do you know that on FRANCH air shoe EUROPE radar lock on flying F117, they put on tape that, and your governmant said that theydidn't switch ON stelth, haha!

That was an F117 Nighthawk and it was downed by AA cannons if I remember correctly. It was spotted by the good old-fashioned naked eye. And the US is ahead of Russia in technology, although the Russians have some very sharp engineers, on par or better than those of the US. It all comes back to funding, which is why the US is ahead.

I presume you're talking about the Su-34 Fullback (at 5:05)? It's not meant to be stealthy, it's a long range interdiction/strike "bomb truck", meaning that it carries a high payload over long distances. Plus, Soviet tactics favoured a swarm of decent aircraft instead of one very lethal one. So you're not really comparing like with like. And if plasma stealth works, it will be stealthy too.

actually your wrong... sukhoi's SU-35 uses stealth technology but not the kind your thinking of... the F22 does suck it is too heavy and it can NEVER out manuver a sukhoi fighter or a sukhoi missile! the F22 would be shot down before the pilot even knew where he was... because all russian radar can see stealth aircraft and carry beyond visual range missiles! and BTW american stealth tech. does not make you invisable to radar only makes you have a really small cross section idiot!

You might be interested to know about studies by the British Defence Research Agency on various aircraft against the Su-35. They gave a win:loss ratio for several aircraft using AMRAAM-type weapons in a series of realistic conflicts. Result:
F-15 Eagle: 1.3:1
Eurofighter: 4.5:1
Rafale: 1:1
And way out in front, the FA/22: 10:1

the f 22 craptors stealth and computers dont work. there r 2 MAJOR weak points. in 9g+ maneuvers, the titanium casting cracks and lets fuel leak, and the aft boom which holds the controller of all the hydraulics cracks and blows apart all the hydraulics. THERE IS NO BACKUP HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

Well as far as I know it works by causing a field of charged ions around the aircraft which absorbs radar waves, instead of relying on the shape or materials of the aircraft to do so. This means that the aircraft itself needn't be a stealth design, like the Nighthawk. So they're thinking of retro-fitting it onto earlier aircraft. It's still only early days yet though.

The F-117 is 1970s technology - it first flew in 1980. It's only stealthy from a narrow angle the front. Apparently there are attempts to detect stealthy aircraft using different methods but one can't judge their success against new tech just by their success against the f-117. BTW, the maths behind beam scattering stealth is Russian but was ignored. (I'm Zimbabwean so don't have a side!)

I'm not really that well informed on stealth technology, but I hear from Combat Aircraft Magazine that Sukhoi's starting a new 5th Generation fighter, the PAK-FA. Apparently it's using plasma stealth. The article also says that plasma stealth can be retrofitted to aircraft not built as stealth aircraft. Any info on that?

Using google, I have seen claims of 100X RCS reduction for plasma stealth but I don't think that this is very spectacular compared to the ratios scattering stealth originally managed.
There certainly has been talk about some kind of US active RAM panel/material that can help even non-stealthy shapes a lot and which makes internal weapons carriage less critical.
Anyhow, I just read Google, really :-).

I agree with you, but that was USA explenation, which is nonsence. Stelth is based on smaller radar reflexion of surface, which is based on sharp angels, and composite materials, also special paint...

F117 is based on 1980's technology. Even latest T50 project is a direct copy of F22. Sukhoi must copy USA designed aircraft to build capable aircraft. Su 24 copied from F111, Su 27 copied from F15/18.

Sabre-rattling "America F**k Yeah!" type onesided comments are mainly bullshit. Russia had the technology down cold, but never quite had the cash to fulfil their projects to the fullest extent.

Exactly, Russian has some of the best military technology in the world. Just because it's not all stealth and long range missiles doesn't mean it's not advanced. There was a fighter exercise between F-15's and various Russian aircraft, including the old Mig-21's. The Russian's won 90% of the dogfights.

look at the timing of the exersise. us airforce was in front of congress trying to get funding for the raptor. in the real world how many f15s have been shot down? in exercises a single f22 has taken on 4 f15's and won. the migs are more manouverable at low speed but at the speeds over 450 knots the raptor becomes more manuverable. the sukhoi is an awesome aircraft though and anyone saying otherwise is a complete idiot.

Actually the F-22 had already been chosen for production a few years before the exercise. And as for how many F-15's would have really been shot down, most of the Russian aircraft in the exercise were excellent at what they were designed to do, which was to defeat American made aircraft. Also, look at the numbers. For the cost of 1 F-22, you could get about 3 or 4 Sukhoi or MiG fighters. When looking over a wide range of factors, the Sukhoi and MiG's are just better choices.

so we can go by exersises, ok i go along with that. the british joust program is amazingly acurate at deciding winners in this arena. the kill ratio is 10 - 1 for the raptor over the current russian aircraft. also at the time even though the f22 had been chosen there were concerns over the cost, and discusians of just upgrading the F15. also the only two areas where the russian aircraft faired better. cost and air to ground.

just to clarify I am NOT putting down the russian aircraft, but untill they go towards the stealth aspect they will loose to the f22. history has shown us one thing, russia will eventualy build a better fighter. it wont be one based on a 30 year old platform but they will build a better fighter. and then the USA will build a better one and then china and so on. the debate here however is what is the better fighter. the f22 at this time will win in an air to air engagement.

Well, I do believe that the F-22 would win in a long range engagement, the Russian craft would most likely win in a dogfight. So it really comes down to which battle is fought.

if the rusian aircraft could bring the engagement speed to below 400 knots. anything above that and the f22 is the more agile of the two craft. think about the superchipmunk, probably the most agile aircraft ever built, but it can only do its manouvers in the 120knot range and below. so the suykhoi has to not only get into dog fight range but also bring the f22 to the lower speed. this is why the t50 will be built.

Stealth is not a "myth". It's not meant to make an aircraft invisible or anything, it's meant to make it hard to detect by radar, electronic emissions and heat signature, which the F117 is. And "my government" said nothing, I'm Irish.

I think we all know about the F-111 shoot downed in Kosovo,that made us once again question the "stealth" technologies!!! no matter what, Russian radars will see the aircraft, and no matter how expensive and high tech our planes claimed to be, it still be a victim of SAM, or can I say the Russian rocket and radar technologies are so advance, I hope that we will never go to war with them!Anybody remember our U-2 shoot downed in '60s? just when we thought it was safe!!!

That was an F117 Nighthawk and it was downed by AA cannons if I remember correctly. It was spotted by the good old-fashioned naked eye. And the US is ahead of Russia in technology, although the Russians have some very sharp engineers, on par or better than those of the US. It all comes back to funding, which is why the US is ahead.

Right, let's settle this. F22 would probably win due to stealth and computerisation. It's got a way more advanced radar and it's stealth would allow it to win before even engaging the Flanker. Any Flanker would probably kick the crap out of an F15 though, the Indian AF managed at an excercise recently. They sent the Americans home after a good whuppin' from their SU30MKs.
