For all the people worried about lineage and style and bla bla: In the words of Royce Gracie (for all you Gracie fanboys) "A belt only covers 2" of your ass, the rest is up to you"
I dont think lineage should even be considered here. The Gracies came up with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in their own back yard, assigned belt ranks to it and started teaching it. Now that 10th Planet has come along should they not be allowed to do what they want with the info. If you want to consider them stealing from BJJ then why not consider BJJ stealing from Japanese JJ or Judo. The line always has to start somewhere.
OK, read a bunch of the threads on the controversy .... my opinion doesn't change. I still think Brandon knows what he is talking about in JJ and his instructional videos are excellent!
Who gives a rat's ass if he has a brown, purple, blue or white belt - the dude can teach! As with most things - it will be all because of money and stealing the limelight - ego's get bruised and then the trash talking starts!
Not sure what all the drama is regarding Brandon and 10th planet system but it sounds from the comments that his lineage/rank is being questioned. To be honest, I could give 2 shits about his lineage/rank - Brandon has some of the best JJ instruction out there (along with Richard Whirley, Ari Bolden & Eddie Bravo). Personally, I think there is too much emphasis put on lineage - let the rolling do the talking ... if you can win then the loser can kiss u're ass. If you lose, practice more!
Thank you for your excellent instruction on BJJ and how you break it down into the suttle yet important parts of the move. I love your website TrainFightWin and continue to reference it on a regular basis. In my opinion, there are a handful of guys worth watching for instruction on the web and you (Richard Whirley) is definitely one of them! I still catch guys with your 'Elvis' Arm Bar:)
@YardMonkey HAHAHA Ari Bolden?! Ari fucking Bolden?! That dude was a WHITE BELT in BJJ wearing his Japanese Jiu Jitsu Black belt showing off moves incorrectly and incompletely. You have no idea what you are talking about. Brandon Quick is a good grappler. Something Ari Bolden is not. Don't compare them. Look at how they do in tournaments if you want to know how good there are.
eddie advertised him as HIS brown belt. dont believe the vultures...something is a miss. i think like all politics its about 2 people getting at the same $. you can not deny this dudes knowledge of the system and jiu jitsu...
I don't deny his knowledge as evidenced by the success of his students in competition; I just don't think martial artists (especially instructors) should be dishonest or misleading about their credentials. It not only damages their reputation and the art, but casts doubt on the legitimacy of their students; even when they are successful. IMO he seems to be an OK guy, but what are his students to say when confronted by others about this? He's put a lot of good people in a tough spot.
eddie is the one who put all this drama out there. he damaged 10th planets rep not brandon. youd have to be an idiot to believe all the contradicting crap on forums filled with vultures. any person can see that there is more to the story and people are on a witch hunt without any real evidence...
what will his students say when confronted? forget confronting, no one has a say unless they roll..
Of course Eddie put it out there. He had to before all the traditionalists who hate him did and started using it to discredit him. I noticed your Youtube profile was registered just in time for you to start doing damage control here by muddying the waters talking about vultures, money, and witch hunts. Since you seem to be an insider, does B Quick have a legit brown belt (I have heard him talk about it with my own ears) or not and if so who from?
And regarding the confrontation thing, I get what you mean because I have no belt whatsoever and have schooled some purples and browns; but being someone without a belt I also know the downsides. Having no lineage to point to is a bad spot to be in. If I wasn't able to say(truthfully) that it is just one aspect of my MMA training I would feel like an idiot when someone asked my JJ belt or rank. Without rank one can never have a legit school, etc. Are his kids just students for life?
I gotta be honest man not many people use the rubber guard in the ufc....a couple at best... and they usually only use it to buy time when they are tired or being GNP'ed hard
Actually I haven't seen any UFC fighters using rubber guard. I've seen a few like BJ Penn use a little bit of it but not much. However, it is coming. The evolution is there and a lot of rubber guard is going to end up in JJ tournaments and MMA. At least that is my opinion. It has expanded my game.
oh I definitely agree that its a great option and one which has alot of potential in bjj... I think the mma application is limited at the higher level but it will probably evolve more too so who knows!
In this day and age being in guard in MMA is not what it used to be. Double wrist control when punches are being rained on you? Its funny how the sport has evolved, people don't want to be on their backs nearly as much. Other than possibly being slammed (a risk with regular guard) I'd want to use it. Much less likely to get hit. I just love seeing the evolution.
you don't play open gaurd in MMA.....Leaves space for the opponent to posture up an rain down punches.....anyone who knows anything about BJJ knows you don't ever leave space...hence the superiority of rubber gaurd in MMA
playing double wrist control is a novice mistake tho
in order to stand you need posture....having the person broken down in rubber guard limits his posture...and essentially makes it very difficult to stand... most will just try to stack you... even then you could maintain rubber guard or even better work to sweep and improve your position
bj penn almost never rocks the open guard ....watch any of his fights lol
If anything you use the closed guard, rubber guard, or butterfly guard ...to stay close and work to sweep or submit.
Open guard is retarded in MMA ...stay in it long enough to get your feet on his hips and push away ... if not, you see it all the time one dude lying on the ground while the other guy controls his feat and pounds on him while he tries to up kick like a baby
Please in your next fight use the open guard haha
shinya aoki cant handle any of the best talent though... his guard is a gimmick and faced with an aggressive and talented opponent he takes too much punishment and loses
not to knock al the names ofthe different "guards" but i can tellthat most ofyou are still very basic. using the guard in mma comprises the usage of everyaspect of the guard. we've broken it down to names todivide it all up so it can be explained easier. but novices suchas all you play them as superior or inferior whenthe best guard players like aoki, maia, penn and noegieras use EVERY aspect of the guard they arein a senseseemless jiu jitsu is not several techniques but ONE continuous technique
basic jiujitsu is the best. buddy i am young right now but i know when i am 45 years i won't be able to twist my knee inta rubber guard. but i can always play the basic game. that is what is wrong with this 10th planet system. the don't know any basics and all this shit. anwyas to each is his own
Umm how do you not know basic jiu jitsu, basic are just that basic the building block of jiu jitsu. We just learn ours at a faster pace. We work every aspect of the game...we work halfguard for a month but every aspect of halfguard from being on the bottom to being the person on top. Giving all possible options. Most people don't like th 10th system cause it does not fit in this nice lil square box that everybody has come to like. Sorry we are different and will always be different.
different but less effective. that shit won't work on the worlds stage and u know it. and don't even bring eddie royler in this. cuz that is only a one time thing. tons of guys have tapped rolyer b4. eddie is good but his stuff was built on traditional stuff. he is denying you own path he rather forces his style unto to u
Well all I can say is that i train 10th planet because that is what i choose. AS far as working on the world stage we will se in do time my child. Lets see 10th planet has been out for less then 10yrs. So it hasn't had a chance but give us time. OOH lets see one of our Brown belts Alder just won advance division at the ADCC west coast trials. As far as forcing something you obviously have never been to our school. Again we learn every thing you know, plus our system. Nothing Forced
What an argument my friend, everything has been buildt on basics or do you believe the Gracies invented the triangle choke. 10th Planet is as good as regular BJJ, depends of what you prefer.
this is true. a lot of his stuff just doesnt work on a world level. i dont think i could ever be "bumped" to the ground. maye if i were only one week into training and had no previous martial arts experience would this work
@GHRepresent hmmm then why has eddies first blackbelt Denny Prokopos just won the nogi world champs.... now that enough time has gone by for the players in the system to develop the skill level needed to win championships, they are doing so.... i mean the FIRST guy to get a blackbelt from Eddie, wins the worlds.... that tells me a whole load dude....
@TheStudentofthegame i am tired of this statment, " there has being enough time... " who knows whether anything will come of it. that denny prokopos won the worlds at brown belt and he has been a royce gracie student for over 6yrs too. so his game is not just 10th planet. to add to that, there is always going to be one talented guy in the gym, how u measure a gym is how the not so talneted ppl are doing.
@GHRepresent lol you sound like Helio Gracie "how u measure a gym is how the not so talneted ppl are doing" it is in a way true, but Helio was not interested in talent, he was interested in self defence, and empowering smaller men (as he was).. What a wonderful man he was!
BUT, Jiu jitsu is now a sport, and in Sport Jiu jitsu (with a Gi) yes there are more effective styles and techniques. i would never argue it. But without a GI i dont see it. The system is designed to work "Gi"less. tbc
Let me explain by giving an example.. I have a friend who is a national Champion 2nd degree Black belt in Judo. i am not the worlds greatest with my takedowns, but as i train mma, i have a few go to's that get the job done. all of these are wrestling based. I wouldnt dream in a million years of standing with that man with a Gi on... But on the other hand i train with him without a Gi, and i wouldnt say i get the upper hand on him, but i hold my own tbc
@TheStudentofthegame Same thing when on the ground, when i was a white belt, we would roll. With a gi on he destroyed me( anyone who doubts judo's ground game hasnt been caught in a bleckbelts kesagetame before!lol) i got cross collar choked that my eyes popped out. But when we trained No Gi, i held my own with submissions being 50/50, nowadays he hasnt a hope NOGI but still catches me with the GI. So all im saying that Gracie JJ and 10thplanet are as Greco roman is to Judo. and in a nogi tbc
@TheStudentofthegame sense as well as mma, i believe that due to the over unders, deep hook transitions as well as the breaking down and maintenance of space 10th planet is more logical than regular Gi based training. And the argument of time is very valid man. it takes years to perfect something, most blackbelts gi or no gi say 10 years... 10thplanet hasnt been around 6, so when it comes to more championships time will tell... also with time comes numbers.. Thousands of Gi schools vs less than
@TheStudentofthegame 10 10thplanet schools, to even have competitive blackbelts would be an AMAZING achievement. let alone, good solid competitive brown and blackbelts like we have... Denny is not the only one, take a look at sean bollinger... you know what i think is a grave misconception, is that people think Eddie said he invented everyting. but he says in his books that he took everything he learned and tweaked and improved percentages using the stuff and put it in a system... thats all
