A society must never ignore the needs of the unfortunate, the downtrodden. It should be a hand up, not a hand out, but I cannot fathom allowing people to go hungry when others are so full.

You can be dissappointed with the results, and still be proud to be an American. At least we are not flocking to get counseling and threatening to move to Canada because the election did not go the way we wanted. It is STILL a democracy, and we are not going to leave the country we love and many brave soldiers have died for because the majority voted for Obama. Free health care here in Australia and over in the UK do have a few problems, but our economy is still going well, and the UK are doing about the same as they ever will.
Unemployed people and students that've never worked in their life also get paid (even more if they have children), also the elderly, the disabled, war veterans etc.
Even with all that, there's still several monopolies on large services, unregulated newer technologies with prices through the roof etc...hardly socialism.

Art is an approximation or reinterpretation of reality - it is not the facts. Neither are Colbert or Stewarts shows. I can watch those shows and have a laugh without taking them as factual. My main point, which you have talked and insulted your way around, remains: both shows explicitly state that they are satire and NOT real news. This is done as a warning to those who are less well-read who tend to form their opinions from watching the idiot box.
